Research Help

Ask a Librarian - Reference Librarians are available to help with your research projects and assignments.

Books and Media - Start by looking for materials at Cal Poly Humboldt in the Library Catalog.  The catalog has close to a million records for all types of materials that you have access to immediately, not just books, but video, electronic books, magazines and more.

Cal Poly Humboldt Theses - The Library Catalog has over 3500 theses produced since 1950. You can browse by degree and/or enter a subject or title keyword or phrase, author or year. Results can be sorted by author, title or year. Most theses from Fall 2005 onward are available fulltext in Humboldt Digital Scholar.

Resource Sharing - If you don't find what you're looking for through the Library, you're not out of luck. We can help you find materials from other CSU libraries and libraries throughout the world and it’s free to make a request! OneSearch searches the combined CSU Catalog of all 23 libraries and request items using the built-in interlibrary loan system. For anything else you can’t find through the CSU Libraries log in to InterLibrary Loan and make a request!

Information Management - A critical part of the student research process is keeping track of references (citations)—journal papers, books, web pages, images, quotations, etc.—that support your research so that you can properly cite them in your work using a required publication style. Zotero is the recommended reference management tool for Cal Poly Humboldt students. Check out the SkillShops Calendar to see if a free workshop will be offered to get you started with Zotero.

Humboldt Digital Scholar - Add a digital copy of your completed thesis to Humboldt's growing collection of institutional scholarship. Increase its visibility worldwide. See Getting Started with Humboldt Digital Scholar.

They also run the Writing Studio, providing free writing support for Cal Poly Humboldt students at any stage of the writing process and the Supplemental Instruction (SI) program to help you succeed.

Loan Periods
Loan periods for books and other materials vary.   A current Cal Poly Humboldt ID card must be presented at the Checkout Desk for all checkouts.
Journals & Magazines
The Cal Poly Humboldt library offers you access to well over 70,000 journals and magazines and the vast majority are online, electronic only.  If you know of a title that you want to see, use our Journal Finder to look up a title or browse by subject categories.

If you are looking for articles on a subject or topic, select one of our specialized databases from our Articles and Databases pages.  Most journals and magazines are available in full text online, but if you see a link to Find It @ Cal Poly Humboldt, click it.  The Find It @ Cal Poly Humboldt service links all of our full text electronic journals together and automatically connects you to Interlibrary Loan when we don't have a subscription.
