Food and Drink in the Library
Introduction
The HSU Library allows food and drink in public areas of the building on a limited basis, as outlined below. Regardless of this policy, food and drink does pose a potential risk to Library collections, equipment, and furnishings. We ask Library users to act in a considerate and responsible manner when consuming food and drink in the facility.
As an added convenience, two vending machines are available in the Food Friendly Area in the southeast corner on the first floor of the Library. These machines offer a variety of snack foods that can be consumed in that area, as well as beverages in containers suitable for use in most areas of the Library.
Our Food Policy
The consumption of food is only allowed in the designated Food Friendly Area in the southeast corner on the first floor of the Library.
We encourage the consumption of snack-type foods which can be eaten without creating undue mess. We also expect our users to clean up after themselves. Note that food deliveries are not allowed.
Our Drink Policy
Nonalcoholic beverages in reclosable, spill-resistant containers are permitted in all areas of the Library, EXCEPT:
- The Atlas and Map Collection on the first floor;
- The Media Resources Area on the second floor; and
- The Humboldt Room on the third floor; and
- The Computer Labs on the first and third floors.
Containers that are allowed in most areas of the Library include:
- Screw top water and soda bottles;
- Travel mugs;
- Sports bottles with built-in straws or pull-top plastic spouts; and
- Disposable cups with tight-fitting lids.
Containers that are only allowed in the Food Friendly Area include:
- Soda cans;
- Coffee mugs without lids; and
- Disposable coffee or drink cups without lids.
What Should You Do If You Encounter Or Create a Spill?
We understand that, even with the utmost care, an occasional spill will occur. "Spill Kits" are therefore available at the following Library service points:
- Circulation Desk (first floor, Nordstrom Lobby)
- Reference Desk (first floor, Reference Area)
- Student Help Desk (first floor, room 120B)
- Periodicals and Media Assistance Window (second floor, room 203)
- Copy Center (second floor, room 205)
- Humboldt Room/Government Documents (third floor, room 308)
Should a spill occur, please report it immediately to the nearest Library staff member, who will assist with cleanup. Prompt action in reporting a spill will help minimize damage to Library resources.
Enforcement of the Food and Drink Policy
We strongly prefer that our users police themselves and abide by this policy, which has been designed to balance the needs of the Library with the convenience of our patrons. However, if a Library staff member does observe an infraction, that staff member will inform the offending party of this policy and ask that they either desist immediately, or relocate to another location, such as the the Food Friendly Area, where food and drink are allowed. Users who refuse to adhere to this policy after being notified by a Library staff member will be reported to the University Police Department, who will take appropriate disciplinary action.
Send Us Your Comments
We always appreciate hearing from our users, so send your comments or questions to Wayne Perryman. We would also be interested in hearing your ideas for products that you would like to have offered for sale in the vending machines, so forward those suggestions as well.
Thank you for your cooperation.
