Theses and Dissertations, with an Emphasis in Natural Resources
The outcome of graduate study conducted at universities is commonly a master's thesis or doctoral dissertation. In addition to the formal thesis or dissertation, research results are often communicated in other "primary" literature formats, such as the journal paper.

Theses and Dissertations in the HSU Library
The 3300+ masters theses completed at Humboldt State University are housed in the HSU Library and listed in the HSU Library Catalog where they are indexed by author, title, subject and department. Use the HSU Theses search option to browse by department and/or enter a subject or title keyword or phrase, author or year.
Two copies of all theses are available in the Library. The first is a library use only copy located in the Humboldt Room and the second copy is generally located in the regular bookstacks. Theses completed since Fall 2005 are also available in fulltext format with links to the fulltext available from the catalog record or through Humboldt Digital Scholar.
Generally, the HSU Library does not acquire dissertations and theses completed at other institutions, with the exception of those that focus on northwestern Californiat. These are also listed by author, title, and subject in the HSU Library Catalog.

Theses and Dissertations in Other Libraries
To identify dissertations and theses completed at other universities the following sources can be used:
- Dissertations (HSU users only) Indexes over 2 million dissertations completed in the United States and Europe. Also includes some masters theses.
- WorldCat (HSU users only) Cooperative
catalog containing the holdings of many university libraries, including
theses and dissertations completed at their respective institutions.
- Library catalogs of universities will commonly list theses and dissertations completed their institution. Natural resource research guides list some of the major research university libraries in the discipline.
To acquire dissertations and theses not in the HSU Library the following options are available for acquiring print or fulltext copies:
- HSU Library's Interlibrary Loan Service. Most theses and dissertations can be borrowed.
- Dissertation
Express sells most U.S. dissertations with a delivery time of 4-5 working
days for paper or immediately for fulltext.
- Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) contains links to several search engines that search for online fulltext theses and dissertations.
- Theses Canada Portal Indexes over 250,000 Canadian theses and dissertations held by the National Library of Canada. Also, provides free access to 46,000 fulltext Canadian theses and dissertations covering 1998-2002.
Guides to Theses and Dissertation in Natural Resources
- Bibliography of Theses on Fishery Biology and its Supplement (QL 615 S66)lLists approximately 3,000 fisheries theses and dissertations completed through 1971.
- Bibliography of Wildlife Theses (SK 353 M66) Lists U.S. and Canadian theses and dissertations completed between 1900 and 1968.
- Dissertation Abstracts Registry (American Society of Limnology and Oceanography) Includes all "registered" dissertations from 1997 to the present. Good for oceanography and fisheries.
- Fish and Fisheries Worldwide (HSU users only) includes dissertations and theses.
- Forestry Theses Accepted by College and Universities in the United States (SD 373 O82) lists theses and dissertations completed between 1900 and 1990.
- GeoRef (HSU users only) Includes over 100,000 theses and dissertations in geology and hydrology with the "Publication Type=theses"
- Wildlife and Ecology Studies Worldwide (HSU users only) Extensively indexes U.S. dissertations and theses.
