- Dictionary of Development: Third World Economy, Environment, Society (Welsh and Butorin) 1990 (Ref HC 59.7 D513 1990) Three volume scholarly encyclopedic dictionary covering development subjects, organizations and countries. Some entries are up to a page in length and include references.
- Dictionary of Environment and Develoment: People, Places, Ideas, and Organizations (Crump) 1991 (Ref GE 10 C78 1991) Description for the 800 entries range from a paragraph to one page.
- Encyclopedia of Sustainable Development (Atmosphere, Climate & Environment Information Programme, Atmospheric Research & Information Centre, Manchester Metropolitan University) Contains short articles, central to the concepts and understanding of sustainable development, that cover the Earth, principles of sustainable development, the environment, natural resources, society, economy and indicators of sustainable development.
- Global Development: a Reference Handbook (Savitt and Bottorf) 1995 (HC 59.7 S283 1995) Provides an introduction to global development issues and resources. Chapters present a overview of issues, facts and statistics, chronology, biographical sketches, leading organizations, and print and nonprint resources.
- Historical Dictionary of Aid and Development Organizations (Arnold) 1996 (Ref HC 60 A738 1996) Contains descriptive and analytical entries for the principal organizations, events, programs and concepts that have played a role in defining and promoting development since 1945..
- International Development Dictionary (Fry and Martin) 1991 (Ref HF 1359 F79 1991)
- Women in the Third World: an Encyclopedia of Contemporary Issues (Stromquist) 1998 (Ref HQ 1870.9 W6548 1998) Scholarly encyclopedia covering women's issues in developing countries.
- Women in the Third World: A Reference Handbook (Kinnear) 1997 (HQ 1870.9 K58 1997) Provides an introduction to issues and resources dealing with women in developing countries. Chapters present a overview of issues, facts and statistics, chronology, biographical sketches, leading organizations, and print and nonprint resources.
- Word Watch Glossary (International Institute for Sustainable Development)
Directories of Organizations
- Directory of Development Organizations (Bert Wesselink) This "resource guide to development organizations and the internet" lists over 47,000 organizations. The directory is organized into eight regions and then subdivided by country. Brief entries for each organization include contact information, including email address and web page if available; and type of organization.
- INASP Directory (International Network for the Availability of Scientific Publications) Directory of organisations and activities working to improve production, access and dissemination of scientific and scholarly information in and between developing and transitional countries. Main body of directory lists organizations by broad subject area.
- InterWATER Organisations
(International Water and Sanitation Centre) Offers information on 650 organisations
and networks in the water supply and sanitation sector, related to developing
countries. Each organisation has a short description, contact details, e-mail
and website address, and related sites where applicable.
- Organizations (Chr. Michelsen Institute) Includes links to major development agencies, institutions and international organizations relevant to development studies.
- Resources Directory for Development and Relief NGOs (Oxfam) 1995 (Ref HV 589 E23 1995 Vol. 3 of the Oxfam Handbook of Development and Relief ) Lists Southern NGOs, international NGOs in OECD countries, official development agencies in OECD countries, and UN and other inter-governmental organizations.

- African Women's Bibliographic Database (Africabib.org) Includes over 30,000 citations from 1986 to current. The database indexes six types of materials: books and government documents; articles appearing in edited books; periodical and journal articles; Masters theses and Ph.D. dissertations as well as a few B.A. theses and honors papers; conference papers; and videocassettes. Search by continent, country or region and then by subject or keyword.
- AGORA: Access
to Global Online Research in Agriculture
Provides free online fulltext access to over 900 journals from major scientific
publishers in the fields of food, agriculture, environmental science and
related social sciences. Fulltext is "Restricted to students and
researchers in qualifying not-for-profit institutions in eligible developing
countries."
- Appropriate
Technology Library (Village Earth)
(HSU users only) Includes online fulltext of 1,050 books covering village-level
and do-it-yourself technology. The Appropriate
Technology Sourcebook (print copy available in Ref T 49.5 .D37 1993)
contains reviews of all books in the AT Library.

Information and analysis service on development and gender. Includes fulltext

- British Library for Development
Studies (Institute of Development Studies)
Catalog of a major research collection of development studies literature
that indexes over 150,000 reports and articles from over 150
journals not indexed in standard article indexes. Includes links to
online fulltext if available. The Country
Profiles section allows one to view reports by country--subdivided
by subject or all recent reports. Use
BLDS Updates to register for regular emails that list the latest published
material added to BLDS in up to 15 subject areas.

for International Development)
Indexes and makes available USAID funded, international development reports.
Includes 130,000 USAID technical and programs documents with 30,000 available
in online fulltext format.

Gateway (Development Gateway Foundation)
Major portal designed to improve peoples lives in developing countries
by building partnerships and information systems that provide access to
knowledge for development.and poverty reduction. The portal consists of
four main parts: 1) Topic Pages that are online communities where
expert guides and global topic advisors work with their communities to
highlight the most relevant and useful online fulltext resources available
in 25 critical development areas; 2) 50 Country Gateways created
by in-country information service providers that promote national development
and build enterprise; 3) dgMarket that provides open and competitive
access to government contract tenders from around the world; and 4) AiDA
(Accessible Information on Development Activities) that is the largest
online source of current and historical information on development projects
with 500,000 listed projects..

Contains approximately 150 fulltext appropriate technology resources covering
solar energy, permaculture, agriculture, animal husbandry, water systems

The Library's SD-Cite database indexes over 17,000 records representing
books, reports, articles, organization websites, CD-ROMS and videotapes
on sustainable development policy and related topics. Links to online
fulltext are provided when available. Indexed articles are selected from
125 journals.

(International Water and Sanitation Centre)
Bibliographic database containing 16,000 references on water supply and
sanitation in developing countries. Includes documents held in the IRC

- JOLIS Library Catalog (World Bank) Catalog of the World Bank Group and the IMF. Includes references to books, journal titles, journal articles, working papers, conference proceedings, technical reports, videos, software, and electronic resources as well as published IMF and World Bank materials.
- OARE:
Online Access to Research in the Environment (UN Environment Programme)
Provides free online fulltext
access to over 1,300 journals from major scientific publishers in environmental
science. Fulltext is "Restricted to students and researchers in qualifying
not-for-profit institutions in eligible developing countries."
- UNBISNET (United Nations Bibliographic Information System) Catalogue of United Nations(UN) documents and publications indexed by the UN Dag Hammarskjöld Library and the Library of the UN Office at Geneva. The coverage of UNBISnet is from 1979 onward, however, older documents are being added to the catalogue on a regular basis. Also provides links to full text resources if available.

Includes the online fulltext of more than 14,000 World Bank Group documents,
including project appraisal reports, economic and sector works, evaluation
reports and studies and working papers.

- Reports and Statistics
- Background Notes (US Department of State) Annual ( print copy available in Ref G 122 C6712) Contains a short account for each country that includes facts about its land, people, history, government, political conditions, economy, and foreign relations. Each note is updated annually.
- Country Analysis Briefs (US Energy Information Administration) Country reports provide a general country profile and more specific information and data on energy production and use, with an emphasis on oil, natural gas and electricity.
- Country Commercial Guides (US Department of State and US Foreign and Commerical Service) Individual guides for US companies that wish to do business in a specific country. Each guide includes information on the country's basic business situation, investment climate, import issues, and business travel.
- Country Profiles (Eldis) Multi-purpose site that lists for each developing country online documents available through Eldis, print publications added to the British Library for Development Studies, key web sites and latest country news.
- Country Profiles for Population and Reproductive Health (United Nations Population Fund) Create a statistical profile for up to four countries that includes indicators for socioeconomic health, adolescent reproductive health, gender equality and reproductive health.

Reports on Human Rights Practices (US Department of State)
Annual report covers internationally recognized individual,
civil, political, and worker rights, as set forth in the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights. Arranged by country.

Studies / Area Handbooks ( American University and Library
of Congress) 1960's-1998 (print copies available in Docs D 101.22:550-#)
Covering over 100 countries the 200-300 page volumes produced for the
US Department of the Army contain a description and analysis of each country's
history, social, economic, political, and national security systems and
institutions . Country Studies produced by the Library of Congress
are both online and available in print and older Country Studies / Area
Handbooks produced by the American University are only available in print
format. Country Profiles
contains briefer but more up-to-date on select countries.
- Data by Country (World Bank) Provides access to several World Bank databases that cover indicators, information and communication technologies, country-at-a-glance, education, gender, and health and nutrition.
- DataFinder (Population Reference Bureau) Database contains data on 136 population, health, and environment variables for more than 220 countries. For briefer country profiles see Country Statistics and Reports.
- EarthTrends: the Environmental Information Portal (World Resources Institute) Contains information on the environmental, social, and economic trends that shape the world. Organized into themes with each theme including data, country profiles, maps and feature article sections. The country profiles section includes charts, graphs and vital statistics for each country. Themes include coastal and marine ecosystems; water resources and freshwater ecosystems; climate and atmosphere; population, health and human well-being; economics, business and the environment; energy and resources; biodiversity and protected areas; agriculture and food; forests, grasslands and drylands; environmental government and institutions; and poverty resources.
- Encyclopedia of the Third World (Kurian) 1992 (Ref HC 59.7 E52 1992) Three volume encyclopedia that includes 10-25 page entries for 122 third world countries. Articles cover political, economic and social systems using text and charts, and maps.
- Europa World Yearbook (Europa Publications) Annual (Ref JN 1 E85) Two volume work that includes information on over 1,000 international organizations and 250 countries and territories. Each 10-20 page country entry includes an introductory section on recent history and sectoral developments; a statistical survey, and a directory of important political, social and econmic organizations.
- FAO Country Profiles and Mapping Information System (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) Presents FAO online information on agriculture and development by country. Areas of emphasis are sustainable development, agriculture, fisheries and forestry.
- GlobalHealthFacts.org (Kaiser Family Foundation) Provides data by country on HIV/AISA, tuberculosis, malaria and other key health and socio-economic indicators.
- Investor's Information Gateway Country Link Database (US Overseas Private Investment Corporation-OPIC) Lists by country over 20,000 documents and other sources of economic, business, political and social data. The goal of OPIC is to support economic development by promoting U.S. private investment in developing countries and transition economies. Resources are only listed for countries in which OPIC can currently do business.
- National Trends in Population, Resources, Environment, and Development: Country Profiles (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) For each country presents statistical time series in five year increments from 1970 to 2005 that cover population, land use, food, social development and economic development.
- OneWorld Country Guides (OneWorld Africa) For selected countries provides a broad introduction to human rights and sustainable development issues. Produced by volunteer editors.
Development Reviews and Indicators
This section includes annual or regular recurring reports that highlight recent developments or provide indicators that index progress in development. See also Environmental Reviews listed in the Environmental Science Research Guide.
- Links to Key Status Reports (International Institute for Sustainable Development) Directory of links to reviews on the economy and development; environment and human settlements; food, health, and social issues; and policy and governance
- Human Development Report (United Nations Development Programme) Annual (latest edition in Ref HD 72 H85) Report that emphasizes people in the development process in terms of economic debate, policy and advocacy. Statistical tables include four composite indices for human developmentthe Human Development Index, the Gender-related Development Index, the Gender Empowerment Measure, and the Human Poverty Index. Each report focuses on a current development theme.
- Millenium Development Goals Report (United Nations) Annual report on progress towards achievement of the eight MDGs.
- Report on the World Social Situation (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) Biennial report that serves as a background document for discussion and policy analysis of socio-economic matters at the intergovernmental level. It identifies emerging social trends of international concern and analyzes the relationships among major development issues that have both international and national dimensions.
- Social Indicators of Development (World Bank) Annual (Ref HC 59.69 S63) Social indicators are reported in two sections for each country: 1) poverty indicators and 2) resources and expenditures. The former includes indicators of population growth (including data on fertility and infant mortality); poverty; consumer prices, education, and health. The latter category includes: size, growth, and structure of population; labor force; eduction; natural resources; income; expenditures on food, housing, fuel and power, transport and communication; and investment in medical care and education.
- State of World Population (United Nations Population Fund) Annual report, each with a thematic emphasis.
- UNCTAD Trade and Develoment Report (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) Annual report that analyses current economic trends and major policy issues of international concern, and makes suggestions for addressing these issues at various levels. The companion work is the UNCTAD Handbook of Statistics that is a comprehensive collection of statistical data on international trade, investment and development. Data is available for individual countries and for economic and trade groupings.
- United Nations World Water Development Report (UNESCO) Triennial report representing a collaboration between 24 UN agencies and convention secretariats that provides a comprehensive review of the state of the world's freshwater resources and tools and policies needed to implement sustainable use of water.
- World Developement Indicators (World Bank) Annual (HSU users only) Includes more than development 800 indicators in 83 tables organized in 6 sections: World View, People, Environment, Economy, States and Markets, and Global Links. Data is included for more than 150 countires. Selected indicators are available for recent years from the World Bank and the United Nations.
- World Development Report (World Bank) Annual (print copy available in HC 59.7 W659; latest year in Reference) Annual report on development progress that reviews the economic, social and environmental state of the world. Each year the report provides an in-depth analysis of a specific topic. The last section includes indicators for 150 countries selected from the complementary publication entitled World Development Indicators.
- World Economic and Social Survey (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) Annual report that provides an objective analysis of long-term social and economic development issues, and discusses the positive and negative impact of corresponding policies.
- World Economic Situation and Prospects (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) Annual analysis of current developments in the world economy and emerging policy issues.
- Yearbook of International
Co-operation on Environment and Development (Fridtjof
Nansen Institute) Annual (print copy available in Ref HC 79 E5 G69) Annual
guide to major instruments and players in international cooperation on the
environment and sustainable development. Sections include evaluation articles
unique to each annual edition that offer an assessment of current issues,
key themes, main players and instruments; reference sections on international
agreements, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental organizations;
and links to selected internet resources.

- Atlas of World Development (Unwin) 1994 (Atlas G 1046 E1 U5 1994) Organized into six chapters that provide text and maps on the historical context, environment, social, economic political, and ideological structure of development.
- A
Developing World (Canadian International Development
Agency) 2004 (print copy available in map G 3200 1988 .C3) Highlights
challenges facing developing countries and the progress made toward achieving
five of the Millenium Development
Goals. It uses the United Nations Development Programme's Human
Development Index (HDI) to show which countries have achieved high
levels of development and which countries are still working toward improving
the lives of their people. The online map is inactive
and one may select a theme, region or country.
- GlobalHealthFacts.org (Kaiser Family Foundation) For each topic will generate a choropeth world map showing the relative distribution of the health indicator.
- Globalis (Norwegian UN Association, UNEP/GRID-Arendal, and UNU/Global Virtual University) Interactive world atlas that generates choropleth and other thematic maps on environmental and development subjects with a purpose of creating an understanding for similarities and differences in human societies, as well as how they influence life on the planet.
- Health, Nutrition and Population (HNP) Atlas (World Bank) Contains maps on a world base.
- Millennium Development Goals Maps (United Nations Population Fund and Mapping Worlds ) Geographical representations of selected indicators of the Millennium Development Goals.
- MiniAtlas of Global Development (World Bank) 2003 (print copy available in Atlas G 1046 E1 W6 2004) Provides small-scale world maps, tables, and graphs that highlight key social, economic, and environmental data for 208 countries and territories
- Poverty Mapping (FAO, UNEP and the CGIAR) Collection of world and regional poverty maps grouped into the following themes-- demographic indicators; economy and markets; education; energy; food security; health; poverty indicators; urban areas; and water and sanitation. These poverty maps are spatial representations of poverty assessments. The assessment information comes from a variety of sources, e.g., indicators of income poverty (such as GDP per capita or daily subsistence levels), or of well-being (such as life expectancy, child mortality, or literacy) Various indicators may be combined to give an index of poverty or human development (such as the Human Development Index, a composite of life expectancy, literacy and income).
- Sanitation Coverage, 2000 (UNICEF) Map shows by country the percentage of population that has access to "improved" sanitation facilities.
- State of Women in the World Atlas (Seager) 1997 (Ref HQ 1154 S34 1997) Uses a global basemap to show the status of women around the world in relation to work, health, education and personal freedom.
- Third World Atlas (Thomas) 1994 (Atlas G 1046 G1 C7 1994) Text, graphs and text show in three chapters the definition of the third world and development; the making of the third world; and issues and challenges in contemporary development.
- Water: the Challenges (UNESCO World Water Development Programme) 2006. Contains maps and charts that highlight world water issues.
- UC Atlas of Global Inequality (University of California, Santa Cruz. Center for Global, International and Regional Studies) Contains data and graphics for individual countries and maps on a global scale that focus on globalization inequality from 1960 to 2000. Data and maps cover demographic, economic and health issues related to global inequality.
- World Bank Atlas (World Bank) Annual (Atlas G 1046.G1 W6) Shows the fundamental development topics of people, environment, economy and states, markets, and global links. The altas is a summary of the World Development Indicators in graphic form. Selected maps from the atlas are available online.
- World Population Density (Geography Network) Maps population density worldwide. Compiled by ESRI using United Nations data. View online or download into ArcExplorer or other gis application. (Map is listed under "Featured Resources".)
