These research tools are used to provide access to "primary" research literature in wildlife. This literature includes journal papers, journals, conference papers, monographic series, and publications issued in other specialized formats as described in The Literature of Wildlife. Depending upon the index publications may be retrieved in a variety of ways--by author, subject, taxonomy, life stage, geography, time, chemical compound, or habitat.
In the HSU Library recent years of most indexes are available on the web through the Library's Articles and Databases page with older years in print format for retrospective searching.
Before starting a literature search through one or more wildlife indexes, a search strategy should be developed which defines and logically organizes a search into its unique concepts. The Search Strategy Worksheet presents a four-step outline for developing such a subject search strategy.
The following wildlife indexes are available through the HSU Library to current
students and faculty. Click on the title to search the index or on the
icon for additional information on the index including
search guides. They are listed in groups according to the extent and format
of their literature coverage.
