    • GeoConnections Discovery Portal (Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure) Guide to geospatial data, organizations that provide data, and services provided by Canadian and other international organizations.
    • Geographic Network Explorer (Geography Network) Directory of free and commercial GIS data. Search by placename, data content, and data theme.
    • GIS Data Sources (Decker) 2001 (Ref G 70.212 D44 2001) Provides an introduction to types of GIS data, defining user data needs and sources for locating and obtaining needed data.
    • Mapdex (Kansas Geological Survey) Provides an index of publicly available ArcIMS services comprising approximately 2,300 servers, serving approximately 40,000 map services, and containing approximately 600,000 GIS layers. Users can search by server, service, projection, geography, and layer names. A simple front-end viewer allows easy searching and quick mapping of spatial data. Users can also add data layers into their ArcGIS project.
    • National Geospatial Data Clearinghouse (Federal Geographic Data Committee) Searches over 250 spatial data servers that contain digital geographic metadata. Searchable by geographic location, place name, time period, keyword, and data server location.

    • Center for International Earth Science Information Network - CIESIN (Columbia University) Specializes in data and applications related to human interactions with the environment.
    • Geo Data Portal (United Nations Environment Programme) Includes data sets used in the Global Environment Outlook (GEO) report and other environment assessments. The database holds more than 400 variables that are available as national, subregional, regional and global statistics or as geospatial data sets (maps). Topics covered include themes like Freshwater, Population, Forests, Emissions, Climate, Disasters, Health and GDP. Data can be displayed on-the-fly as interactive maps, graphs, data tables or downloaded in different formats.
    • GIS Data Depot (Geocommunity) This "supersite" for GIS data includes over one terrabyte of freely downloadable data in a catalog of over 1 million domestic and international datasets. These datasets include nearly all digitally available USGS 24K, 100K, 250K DLG quadrangles, numerous statewide datasets, DEMs, DRGs, DOQs, and satellite imagery. Most of the vector data is available in E00, SHP, MIF, DXF, or DLG SDTS format and the raster data is available in TIFF or .jpeg format.

    • Comprehensive Guide to State and Nationwide GeoData Clearinghouses for the United States (Directions Magazine) Directory of state clearinghouses and sites that contain nationwide data.
    • EarthExplorer (US Geological Survey) Identify geospatial products available from the US Geological Survey including aerial photography, satellite imagery, digital orthophoto quads, digital line graphs, digital elevation models, digital raster graphics, and other map products. Determine spatial coverage by defining coverage on a map, entering geographic coordinates, or entering a place name.
    • Geodata.gov: Your One Stop for Federal, State & Local Geographic Data (US Geological Survey) Major gateway to geospatial information and data produced under the federal government's Geospatial One-Stop e-government initiative. Content includes data, documents and resources. There are four ways to find content: 1) the Search page lets you search for content by entering search criteria and an area of interest; 2) the Data Category pages allow you to browse a collection of metadata records about specific data themes using 17 predefined data categories; 3) the Current Event or Application topics pages are similar to Data Category pages, except that they emphasize data and related information for special application areas or current events; and 4) the Map Viewer application contains a predefined list of map services which you can add to the Map Viewer or you can also specify the URL of a particular map server to find and browse more map services.

    • Geologic Maps of Western States (US Geological Survey) Links to statewide geological map datasets.
    • Geospatial Data Gateway (U.S. Natural Resources Conservation Service) Available data sets include precipitation, TIGER, DRGs, DEMs, NED, DOQs, National Land Cover, and SSURGO (soils).
    • GIS Data (Inforain) Includes over 250 GIS data layers covering the coastal temperate forests of the western United States.
    • GIS Data Set by State (US Fish and Wildlife Service) Includes links to GIS data sets available from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and from other state and federal agencies.

    • California Environmental Information Catalog (CERES) Catalog of information (metadata) about environmental data sources in California. Contributors include cities, counties, utilities, state and federal agencies, private businesses, and academic institutions. Searchable by organization, resource type, geographic region, or keyword. Under "Resource Type" there are 750 records listed under "geographic information systems" and 450 records under "spatial data."
    • California Vegetation Map Catalog (International Center for the Environment) Contains metadata records for more than 50 California vegetation map data sets. Searchable by county, ecoregion, or hydrologic unit.
    • Geofinder (CERES) Find and retrieve geographic and environmental data from the California Resources Agency and other partner organizations. Drill down through a map of California using predefined geographies like zip code, watershed, bioregion, county, urban area or by place name. Once an area of interest is identified, you can retrieve digital orthophoto quads; scanned USGS map sheets; a list of rare species and natural communities inventoried by the California Natural Diversity Data Base; and other datasets and projects. GeoFinder also lets you crosswalk between these geographies.

    • California GAP: GIS Data (California GAP Analysis Project) Contains GIS data sets developed for the California GAP Analysis Project. Data is available in statewide datasets or in subsets by ecological region and is available in ARC/INFO export file format. Datasets include landcover, land stewardship and ownership, Jepson ecological region boundaries, predicted distribution of 455 terrestrial vertebrate species, and other basic reference datasets. The same data is available on the GAP Analysis of Mainland California: An Interactive Atlas of Terrestrial Biodiversity and Land Management (Atlas QH 76.5 C2 C34 1995).
    • California Geographical Survey (California State University, Northridge) Includes TIGER and DEM data for California.
    • California Spatial Data Sets (US Fish and Wildlife Service) Includes links to GIS data sets available from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and from other state and federal agencies.

    • Natural Hazard Disclosure Maps (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection) Series of California county maps that show the two types of fire hazard areas referenced in California legislation as disclosure items in real estate transactions. This includes Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ) in Local Responsibility Areas (LRA) and Wildland Areas That May Contain Substantial Forest Fire Risks and Hazards in State Responsibility Areas (SRA). County map images can be viewed online as .pdf files or downloaded as ArcView shapefiles.

    • Advanced Spatial Analysis Facility Data Sets (Humboldt State University) Contains datasets in ArcInfo exchange formats that cover the Klamath Basin, Humboldt Bay, and the City of Arcata; also includes DOQs for Humboldt County. The Klamath Basin GIS Directory (Klamath Basin Ecosystem Restoration Office and Humboldt State University Geographic Information Systems Group) 1995 (G 70.5 U5 K53 1995 Hum Co Collection) describes some of the available Klamath data layers.

    • Klamath WebGIS (Humboldt State University) GIS data for the Klamath River basin is available in a number of ways--through an interactive map browser; web mapping services that allow you to integrate dynamic Klamath maps directly into your web browser or desktop GIS software; and a data library from which you can download GIS data in either ESRI e00 or shapefile format. In addition there is a Klamath Places Database that contains all of the official USGS place names for the Klamath Basin in addition to many more local place names, gauging stations and others. It is searchable by county, watershed, category and name. In addition to simple text searches, you can link these features to an interactive map or to other databases containing more extensive info for that particular site. Tools are provided to transform coordinates between different projections and to query for a map by latitude and longitude.
    • Northern California (US Environmental Protection Agency. Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program) Dataset produced for the Western EMAP Northern California Pilot Study Area (NCPSA). The dataset study area boundary includes the Pacific Ocean coastline from Tomales Bay in California extending to the mouth of the Rogue River in Oregon on the west, trends along the Oregon-California state line to near Goose Lake on the north, and follows the western edge of California’s Central Valley to a location near the community of Petaluma on the east and south. The purpose of the dataset is to help resource managers better "understand and access the status and trends in the condition of our ecological resources and the stressors affecting these systems." The GIS dataset includes layers for hydrograhy, land cover, roads, vegetation, soils, land ownership, mines, regulated facilities, and demography. Also included is the Analytical Tools Interface for Landscape Assessments (ATtILA) ArcView extension that allows users to calculate common landscape metrics, including landscape characteristics, riparian characteristics, physical characterics,and human stresses.
    • Northern California Coastal DEMs (Humboldt State University Advanced Spatial Analysis Facility) Includes 10-meter Digital Elevation Models for all of Humboldt and Del Norte counties sorted by USGS 7.5 minute quad name.
    • Russian River Watershed GIS (US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Circuit Rider Productions) Collection of spatial datasets created by federal, state and local agencies and organizations for addressing salmonid recovery in the Russian River watershed. The datasets are grouped into the following categories: base data, distribution and habitat, hydrology, vegetation, landuse/landcover, acquisition & assessment, physical geography, management, environmental hazards and imagery/DEM's.
