- Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps - Starting
in 1867 the Sanborn Map Company began the production of fire insurance
maps that eventually covered 12,000 communities in the United States,
Canada, and Mexico. These large scale maps, drawn at scales of 1"=50'
and 1"=100', were created to assist fire insurance agents in determining
the degree of risk associated with commercial, industrial, and residential
property within a community. Shown on the maps are the "footprints"
of individual buildings, including their dimensions, shape, height,
location of doors and windows, building material, and uses; ethnicity
of occupants (occasionally); and other property details and city improvements,
including lot lines, street widths, fire hydrants, and other fire-fighting
facilities. These maps frequently represent the most detailed information
on historical urban land use and are used by scholars and professionals
in history, geography, architecture, and environmental engineering.
A key to map notations provided
by the Sanborn Map Company is available. For additional background

- Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Map of California (California Geological Survey) Series of maps for every 1 degree by 2 degree quadrangle in California showing contours of probabilistic ground shaking (Peak Ground Acceleration [PGA], 10% probability of being exceeded in 50 years, assuming a uniform soft rock site condition).
- Quaternary Faults and Fold Database of the United States: California (US Geological Survey) Contains information on faults and associated folds in California that are believed to be sources of M>6 earthquakes during the Quaternary (the past 1,600,000 years). Maps of these geologic structures are linked to individual descriptions and references for each structure. Search using a map-based interface that divides the state into 1 x 2 degree quadrangles.
- River Stage Maps from National Weather Service/California Nevada River Forecast Center (California Department of Water Resources - California Data Exchange Center) Contains regional maps showing river stages and discharge levels at selected gaging sites during three time intervals: current hour, 1 hour ago, and 2 hours ago.
- Seismic Hazard Zone Maps (California Division of Mines and Geology) Series of maps at a scale of 1:24,000 covering urban areas of California that chart areas prone to liquifaction (failure of water saturated soil) and earthquake-induced landslides . Prepared under the authority of the Seismic Hazards Act of 1990, they are used by cities and counties to regulate development. The Seismic Hazard Mapping Program Home Page includes information about the program, an interactive mapper, accompanying evaluation reports and downloadable gis files.
- Seismic Shaking Hazard Maps of California (Petersen, et al) 1999 (Cal Doc C810 M32 #48) (Map Sheet #48) Includes seven maps on a single sheet: Historic earthquakes (1800-1994) with magnitudes 5 or greater -- Spectral acceleration for 0.3-second period (high frequency) -- Areas damaged by historic earthquakes (1800-1998) -- Spectral acceleration for 1.0-second period (low frequency) -- Slip rates of major active faults -- Preliminary surface geologic materials--Peak ground acceleration 10% probability of being exceeded in a 50 year period.
- Seismicity of California, 1808-1987 (Goter) 1988 (map G 4361 C55 1987 G4) State map at a scale of 1:1,000,000 that shows epicenters by magnitudes and age.
- ShakeMap (TriNet ShakeMap Working Group) Representations of ground shaking produced by moderate and large California earthquakes. Automatically generated maps show instrumental intensity, peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, and spectral response.
- Simplified Fault Activity Map of California (Jennings and Saucedo) 2002 (Cal Doc C810 M32 #54 (Map Sheet #54) Significant earthquakes and fault reputures plotted on map.
- 24-Hour Aftershock Forecast Map (US Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program) Updated daily, this map shows the probability of strong earthquake shaking (with a Modified Mercalli Intensity of VI or greater) in the next 24 hours. The probability is calculated, based upon the known behavior of aftershocks and the possible shaking pattern predicted from historical patterns on the fault or in the area. The system considers all earthquakes, large and small, that are recorded by the California Integrated Seismic Network (CISN). These probabilities apply both to aftershocks smaller than the first event and to the possibility that the "aftershock" will, in fact, be larger than the first event in which case it becomes a "foreshock."
- Volcano Hazards of California (US Geological Survey) Includes Volcanoes and Volcanic Areas Map of California , Aerial distribution of 4 Upper Quaternary Tephra Layers over the Western United States map and links to other information sources.
- WaterWatch--Current Water Resources Conditions: California(US Geological Survey) Series of maps that graphically show streamflow conditions in California. Maps are updated daily or more frequently. Individual maps show real-time streamflow compared to historical streamflow, flood and high flow conditions, daily streamflow compared to historical streamflow, 7-day average streamflow compared to historical streamflow, below normal 7-day average streamflow compared to historical streamflow, and drought watch. Mouse-over any of the 200+ recording sites to get detailed site information.
