Humboldt State University LibraryIndex to Bent's Life Histories of North American Birds |
Arthur C. Bent's 20-volume series on Life Histories of North American Birds was published between 1919 and 1958 in the U.S. National Museum Bulletin (Docs SI 3.3) and was for many years the most complete reference work on North American bird species. The series is now superceded in large part by the species accounts found in the Birds of North America: Life Histories for the 21st Century series (ref QL 681 B625) published by the American Ornithologists' Union and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.
The following list includes two sections: a table of contents arranged by bulletin number that shows the contents of each bulletin as reflected on its title page; and an alphabetical list of groups of birds, using both scientific orders and common names as listed on the title page followed by the bulletin number where found. Nomenclature follows earlier AOU checklists. To find genera or individual species of birds, you must know the major group or order to which the bird belongs.
