Internet Resources for English Courses

HSU English Department

Each section of this guide includes recommendations for relevant websites. This page includes more general information about using the web effectively for researching literary topics.

Discussion Groups

Also known as listservs or electronic conferences, these can be a useful Internet resource for research and scholarship. They give access to expert opinion, both academic and professional, or to lively discussions among enthusiasts. You may "lurk" (sign on and read the postings without entering the discussion), or you may contribute your own questions and opinions.

CataList is a searchable listing of listserv lists that includes instructions for subscribing to the lists it identifies.

Directories and Search Engines

These sites, such as Google, help you find websites of interest. General information on these resources is available in OWL 3.

Below are two sites that are particularly recommended for finding academically useful information on literary topics:

Social Sciences and Humanities Infomine
The Infomine Scholarly Internet Resource Collections is a project of UC Riverside, similar in scope and quality to the Voice of the Shuttle. Use the "Browse" feature to get a sense of what is included.
Voice of the Shuttle: Web Page for Humanities Research
This site is maintained by a team at UC Santa Barbara.
