I was hired, as Martha Weil, as a reference librarian at Humboldt State in 1986. (I became Martha Johansen in 1994.) Before that, I had worked as an academic reference librarian and as a library instruction librarian in the Midwest. I have a bachelor of arts degree in English from UC Berkeley, my master's degree in library science is from the University of Michigan, and I have a master's degree with honors in medieval history from the University of Kansas. My thesis for my history degree is titled, "Magiferous Plants in Medieval English Herbalism."
My current subject responsibilities are for art, English, music, theatre, film and dance, and women's studies. I also manage the Library's audio recordings collection. I serve as library instruction coordinator, which involves work on the Library's OWLS (Online Workshop for Library Skills) and team-teaching SP 285: Beginning Academic Research with Mary Kay.
Since October 2006, I have been the host of a classical music program on the local PBS-affiliate radio station, KHSU-FM, 90.5 Arcata and KHSR-FM, 91.9 Crescent City/Brookings. The Classical Café airs from 10:00 to noon Pacific Time on Monday mornings. If you are outside the local listening area, you can listen to the show live on the web at khsu.org.
