I. Introduction.

This web page is designed to introduce you to scientific and technical literature in water resources and water quality, strategies for searching the literature in those areas, and research tools available to assist in conducting a search. For a general introduction to the types of literature where water resources and water quality information may be found see Environmental Resources Engineering: A Guide to Doing Research in HSU Library.

II. Reference Materials

Reference materials serve a variety of purposes. They can be utilized to find concise factual information--directories and statistical compilations; read topical overviews--dictionaries, encyclopedias and handbooks; identify research done on specific topics--reviews and bibliographies; and locate standard methods and procedures--handbooks and manuals. Many can be used as starting points which lead you to specific research which has appeared in primary sources.  A primary source or primary literature is defined as:

1. an account by an eyewitness or the first recorder of an event, in written or other form, including microform and electronic reproduction (e.g. diaries, letters, minutes of meetings, news footage, newspaper articles) 2. data obtained through original research, statistical compilations or legal requirements. (e.g. reports of scientific experiments, U.S. census records, public records) 3. creative works such as poetry, music, or art 4. artifacts such as stone points, pottery, furniture, and buildings. [Glossary of Selected Library and Information Technology Terms (http://library.humboldt.edu/infoservices/literacy/gloss.htm)]

The following list of reference materials is not meant to be comprehensive. It is a sampling of reference materials which are available:

D. Reviews. Scientific reviews or "state-of-the-art" reviews critically survey a narrow topic and identify and evaluate research which has appeared in the "primary" literature. Extensive bibliographies of cited "primary" literature are commonly included. Scientific reviews typically appear in annual publications entitled "Annual review of...," "Advances in ...," as well as in journals, especially those which have "review" as part of the title. Annual reviews often have cumulative indexes and individual review papers are commonly included in indexes. Annual reviews of interest in water resources and water quality include:

Advances in Aquatic Microbiology (QR 105 A38)
Advances in Hydroscience (GB 653 A27)

Water environment research : a research publication of the Water Environment Federation. "Annual Literature Review" (periodical TD 511 S4) Appearing annually in the June issue, this compilation of review articles analyzes approximately 6,000 literature references each year concerning water pollution and treatment.

III. Library Catalogs and Subject Classifications

Library catalogs are generally used to locate "book" materials which may be either "primary" or "secondary" scientific publications. Examples of "primary" publications include conference proceedings, technical reports, theses and dissertations. "Secondary" publications include textbooks, handbooks, and many other types of compacted or synthesized publications.

A. HSU Library. In this library two research tools are available to assist in identifying monographic materials by subject--the Library of Congress Classification System and the Library catalog.
1. Library of Congress Classification System. The general book collection in the HSU Library is organized on the shelves by subject using this classification system employed by most academic libraries in the United States. (In addition most special collections - "Periodicals," "Reference," "Map and Atlas," and "Indexes and Abstracts" - all follow this same subject arrangement.) Listed below are major classification areas of where water resources and water quality literature is likely to be found.

2.  Library Catalog - Catalyst
Catalyst contains records for almost everything in the Humboldt State University Library:  books, including those in the Reference Collection, the Children's Literature Collection, the Curriculum Collection, and the Humboldt County Collection; journal titles; proceedings; transactions; electronic resources; videorecordings; films; sound recordings; music scores; maps; and atlases. Searching for course reserve materials will be possible starting spring  2000. Beginning in 1998, some federal government documents are listed in Catalyst. California documents are not yet listed.
If you do not have a particular author or title you are looking for, you will want to search for subject.  The best ways to do a subject search is to do a Keyword (Relevancy) or Build-A-Search search.  For more information, see OWL 2 - Introduction to Catalyst

B.Other Library Catalogs. There are a number of electronic tools which can be used to identify publications available in other libraries.
California Digital Library (formerly known as Melvyl)  - a catalog of 3.5 million publications in University of California libraries.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Publications  - an electronic catalog of materials available at EPA libraries including a comprehensive listing of EPA publications. Several specialized databases on hazardous materials and clean lakes are available.

Library Catalogs - this HSU Library page has links to other library catalogs.

WorldCat  - an electronic union catalog of 39 million books, government documents, technical reports, media, maps, sound recordings, and other monographic materials found in 17,000 libraries.

IV. Indexes

These research tools are used to provide subject, taxonomic, geographic, and author access to "primary" research literature--journals, monographic series, technical reports, conference papers, and government documents.  The major indexes for information on water resources and water quality are listed below:

*Ecology Abstracts 1982-. Indexes journals, books, conference proceedings, and reports focusing on interaction between organisms and their environments as well as each other. Covers aquatic ecosystems and water resources. Updated monthly.

Environmental RouteNet  An encyclopedic reference guide to all aspects of environmental information via the Internet.

GEOBASE  1980-. This is a broad-ranging index to literature in the fields of geography, geology, ecology, oceanography, and international development. Includes 3,000 references annually on "Climatology and Hydrology." The majority of the references are to journal articles but also indexed are conference papers, books, and technical reports. for the literature prior to 1980, you will need to use the print source Geographical Abstracts (abstr G 1 G335).

GEOREF  The electronic version of Bibliography and Index of Geology (abstr QE 1 B53) [1785-1996] covers the literature of geology, including hydrology and hydrogeology, for North America (1785 to date) and the rest of the world (1933 to date).
