compilations and datasets. Many of the sources listed have been produced
by government agencies since they often have mandated or regulatory responsibilities

Center for Environmental Information and Statistics (http://www.epa.gov/eq) This web site from the EPA has the mission of harmonizing and integrating environmental data collected across the agency. The site is currently undergoing reorganization and this site is being being merged into EPA's new Office of Environmental Information. An useful feature is the EQ Environmental Atlas which offers "an online environmental map collection, links to other important collections, and information to help you understand environmental quality maps, mapping, and environmental information."
Counting California (http://countingcalifornia.cdlib.org/) A collaborative project funded by the California Digital Library and the Library of California, Counting California has a "single interface to actual raw data compiled by federal, state, and local agencies, and also allows users to collate and integrate data by topic, geography, title, and provider."
Encyclopaedia Britannica World - (Accessible from the HSU Library Databases menu at http://library.humboldt.edu/infoservices/indexes/alphafast.html) - Includes flags, maps, articles, and statistics on individual countries.
Envirofacts Warehouse (http://www.epa.gov/enviro/) Envirofacts is a relational database that integrates data extracted monthly from several facility (or site) based EPA program systems: Produced by the Government Printing Office, this index covers the publications of federal government agencies from July 1976 to date. Safe Drinking Water Information System, Superfund Data, Hazardous Waste Data, Toxic Release Inventory, Water Discharge Permits, and Air Releases. Envirofacts also contains a grant information database, two integrating databases, and spatial data. Envirofacts contains data that are available under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). No enforcement, budget-sensitive, or proprietary business information is contained in this database.
Environmental RouteNet - Accessible from the HSU Library Databases menu at http://library.humboldt.edu/infoservices/indexes/alphafast.html - Cambridge Scientific Abstracts produces this encyclopedic reference guide to all aspects of environmental information. Fedstats: One Stop Shopping for Federal Statistics (http://www.fedstats.gov/index.html) More than 70 agencies in the United States Federal Government produce statistics of interest to the public. The Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this site to provide easy access to the full range of statistics and information produced by these agencies for public use.
FedWorld (telnet://fedworld.gov or http://www.fedworld.gov) Provides access to more than 100 computer bulletin boards operated by federal agencies. Some of these bulletin boards include data files of government statistics.

National Transportation Data Archive (NTDA) (http://www.bts.gov/ntda/) The National Transportation Data Archive provides updated data, graphs and charts on nationwide transportation statistics.
National Transportation Statistics (NTS) (http://www.bts.gov/ntda/nts/) Includes detailed tables on the transportation system, transportation economics, safety, and energy and environmental consequences. Companion volume to Transportation Statistics Annual Report (TSAR).
RAND California - (Accessible from the HSU Library Databases menu at http://library.humboldt.edu/infoservices/indexes/alphafast.html) - Contains information on California public policy and economics. Includes an extensive collection of statistics, weekly bulletins and an index to research and policy reports, some of which are fulltext.

These data files are for use in geographical information systems for analysis and integration with other geospatial data. Of particular interest is the Land Use and Land Cover data file.
World Factbook - 2001 edition (http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html) The World Factbook is prepared by the Central Intelligence Agency for the use of US Government officials, and the style, format, coverage, and content are designed to meet their specific requirements. Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center (http://cdiac.esd.ornl.gov) Data on the levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide and other radiatively active trace gases. Emissions, atmospheric concentration, ocean chemistry, vegetation response, land-use, and coastal hazards are some topics.Climate Prediction Center (http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/) The mission of the Climate Prediction Center is to maintain a continuous watch on short-term climate fluctuations and to diagnose and predict them. Cooperative Summary of the Day (Docs C 55.281/2-4 cd-rom) 21 volume cd-rom set of daily climatological station records from the earliest period of record through 1993 for the entire United States. Data is in ASCII file format. There is no search or extraction software.
El Nino Theme Page: El Nino Related Climate Data (http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/toga-tao/el-nino/climatology.html) Includes data from the tropical Pacific Ocean, online drought data, and anomalies in temperature and precipitation. NCDC Hourly Precipitation (ref QC 983 N235) This cd-rom contains hourly observations from recording stations in the western US from as early as 1900.
NCDC Summary of the Day (ref QC 983 N24 1995) This numeric cd-rom database contains records of daily climatological observations (precipitation, snowfall, evaporation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature) for stations in the National Climatic Data Center Cooperative Observers Network (TD 3200) file. The database is based on single readings during each 24-hour period. Records date from the mid-1800s to 1991. Data can be printed or downloaded in several optional formats for use in a DBMS, spreadsheet or other application program. The HSU Library has two cd-roms covering the western United States.NCDC Surface Airways (ref QC 984 W38 N24) A cd-rom containing daily climatological data from first-order stations in California and Arizona.
NOAA Marine Environmental Buoy Database: Eastern Pacific Ocean (auxiliary GC 150.5 N26 1994) Contains daily records from marine buoys on climate, waves, currents, ocean temperature, etc.Research Data Archives of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (http://www.ncar.ucar.edu/info/ResearchData.html) Includes atmospheric, oceanographic, and geophysical data sets for use in meteorological research and provides access to the Kuwait Data Archive, meteorological data which were collected to study the effects of the 1991 oil fires in Kuwait on the environment.
Special Climate And Weather Summary -- April 7, 1998 (http://www.publicaffairs.noaa.gov/climate/cliedit.html) This report from NOAA summarizes the climate effects of El Nino from December 1997-March 1998. Climate anomalies and changes for a variety of locations throughout the US are reported as well as record high temperatures and precipitations which were set during this time.
TAO Buoy Data Display (http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/toga-tao/realtime.html) Realtime data on surface temperatures and other oceanographic measurements received daily via satellite from the Tropical Atmosphere Ocean (TAO) Array in the Pacific Ocean. Includes historical snow course data, depth and density, water supply updates and forecasts.California Data Exchange Center(http://cdec.water.ca.gov/) The California Data Exchange Center (CDEC) collects, stores, disseminates, and exchanges hydrometeorological data and related information. The data collection began as a small system designed to obtain data urgently needed to provide river stage forecasts and flood warnings for the North Coastal area and for the Central Valley. USGS Daily Values (ref GB 991 W2 U27 1995) This numeric cd-rom database contains daily records of streamflow and lake volume and related physical data (temperature and suspended sediments) from recording stations in the western United States. You may view, print, and download data.
USGS Quality of Water (ref TD 223.6 U23 1993) Contains surface and ground water quality information from the USGS Watstore database. Parameters include organics, inorganics, metals, pesticides, and more. Includes recording stations from the western US.USGS Hydro-Climatic Data Network (HCDN):Streamflow Data Set, 1874 - 1988 (http://wwwrvares.er.usgs.gov/hcdn_cdrom/1st_page.html) The Hydro-Climatic Data Network, or HCDN, consists of streamflow records for 1,659 sites throughout United States and its Territories. Records cumulatively span the period 1874 through 1988, inclusive, and represent a total of 73,231 water years of information.

Has biomass resource maps and expects to add much more data to produce an atlas of U.S. biomass resources by the year 2000.Energy Information Administration(http://www.eia.doe.gov/) The Energy Information Administration (EIA) is a statistical agency in the U.S. Department of Energy created by Congress in 1977. World Radiation Data Center (WRDC) Online Archive (http://wrdc-mgo.nrel.gov) The WRDC is located at the Main Geophysical Observatory in St. Petersburg, Russia, and is a central depository for solar radiation data collected at over 1,000 sites throughout the world. Hazardous Substance Release/Health Effects Database (HAZDAT)Comprehensive Epidemiologic Data Resource (http://cedr.lbl.gov) The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has developed the Comprehensive Epidemiologic Data Resource (CEDR) Program to provide public access to health and exposure data concerning DOE installations. Most of the data are from epidemiologic studies conducted by DOE-funded researchers as part of the DOE Worker Health and Mortality Study. Additionally, studies of populations residing near DOE installations, and other studies of radiation health effects, such as classic studies of atomic bomb survivors and the radium dial painters, are represented in CEDR.

HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base (http://www.census.gov/pub/ipc/www/hivaidsn.html) The HIV/AIDS Surveillance Data Base was developed and is maintained by the Health Studies Branch, International Programs Center (IPC), Population Division, U.S. Bureau of the Census, with funds from the U.S. Agency for International Development. It is a compilation of information from studies appearing in the medical and scientific literature, presented at international conferences, and appearing in the press. Available information for population groups in a selected country can be easily retrieved and displayed on the computer screen, printed in tabular format, or saved to an ASCII or Lotus file.
National Center for Health Statistics (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/) This site has a data warehouse of published & unpublished statistical tables as well as the complete text of Health, United States. NCHS Web Search may be used to search the site.
National Institutes of Health Home Page (http://www.nih.gov) Contains links to most of the 24 institutes and research labs which comprise the NIH, one of the world's foremost biomedical research centers. Many of these sites provide access to statistics.UNICEF Statistics(http://www.unicef.org/statis/) Clickable maps provide data on a country's basic indicators, mortality & health, nutrition-related indicators, water & sanitation, and education.
World Health Organization Statistical Information System (http://www.who.ch/whosis/whosis.htm) This site has many sources of global health data, including the Weekly Epidemiological Record.

CONTAMINATION & TOXICOLOGYEnvirofacts Master Chemical Integrator (EMCI) Chemical References Web Pages (http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/emci/chemref/index.html) Envirofacts Master Chemical Integrator (EMCI) is used to integrate the varied chemical identifications used in four program system components currently available in Envirofacts. The integrator eliminates the need for a user to know how a chemical substance is identified when accessing environmental data such as discharge limits, reported releases, etc., from different program office systems.
Environmental Contaminants Encyclopedia (http://www.aqd.nps.gov/toxic/index.html) Made available by the National Park Service, this resource focuses on wildlife and fish health. Since the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), the National Library of Medicine, and others have more completely summarized human toxicology issues, the main thrust herein was to summarize information related to fish, wildlife, invertebrates, and other non-human living resources. Data is given related to the toxicology of 118 chemical compounds or mixtures (e.g., petroleum).
Hazardous Chemical Database (http://ull.chemistry.uakron.edu/erd/) Searchable database of more than 1300 hazardous chemicals. Data includes names, synonyms, formula, physical data, NFPA ratings, DOT guides and registry numbers (CAS, DOT, RTECS, EPA).
Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) (http://www.epa.gov/iriswebp/iris/index.html) The Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS), prepared and maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), is an electronic data base containing information on human health effects that may result from exposure to various chemicals in the environment. The information in IRIS is intended for those without extensive training in toxicology, but with some knowledge of health sciences.
Material Safety Data Sheets Search (http://research.nwfsc.noaa.gov/msds.html) From the Northwest Fisheries Science Center, this site allows searching of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) provided by manufacturers of chemicals which give information on the proper handling of the chemical. Physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage and disposal information is usually included.
