I am deaf so I rely on lip-reading to communicate.  I have volume controls on my telephone so I can usually understand people who call me if they speak clearly.  I do have trouble when people call me using cell phones because they are usually not as clear. My life was changed in June 1993 when I graduated from the San Francisco SPCA Hearing Dog Program with a hearing dog named Spike. Spike alerted me to sounds that I do not hear such as when someone knocked on my office door, the phone rang or the fire alarm/smoke detector went off.  Spike passed away in 2008 and I am currently on the waiting list for a new hearing dog at the Sam Simon Foundation.
