AD Producer Address
The AD field contains the
address of the producer or publisher of computer software, audiovisual,
or nurse practice acts
records.
A unique number is assigned
to each record in the CINAHL database. The first four digits represent
the year of entry. Searching by accession number is the fastest way to
retrieve a single record.
Authors' names are hyphenated and appear last name first, followed by one or two initials and, when appropriate, Jr., Sr., etc. Degrees and honorifics are omitted.
The most efficient way to search for an author's name is as a hyphenated, "bound" phrase. If you are unsure about the exact form of the name, you may truncate with an * or consult the Index.

Each CINAHL record contains two Descriptors fields, which include all the controlled vocabulary terms that have been used to describe the content of a document. Descriptors which reflect the primary focus of an document are assigned as Major Subject Headings (MJ) and appear with an asterisk. Terms describing subsidiary issues are assigned as Minor Subject Headings (MN). Searching with the DE field abbreviation will retrieve both Major and Minor Descriptors.
A descriptor may be either a single word or a phrase. Multi-word descriptors should be searched with hyphens, such as patient-safety in de. Single-word descriptors can be entered either without a hyphen (nurses in de) or with a hyphen (nurses- in de).
Searching single-word descriptors without a hyphen retrieves all subject headings containing the term, such as nurses as well as staff-nurses. Searching with the hyphen limits the retrieval to occurrences of the single-word term.
Searching with a descriptor alone retrieves the heading without any subheadings . To retrieve all occurrences of a descriptor, with any subheading, use truncation, for example, breast-feeding* in de. To search for a particular heading/subheading combination, bind the terms with hyphens, such as cancer-pain-drug-therapy in de.
Cinahl Information Systems indexers often add a document type to a record to indicate the publication format or the presence of some special data. More than one document type might be assigned to a given record. Multi-word document types must be hyphenated.
Document types include:
DX Description Text
The full text of the research
instrument. To search for records that contain this text, limit your search
with the statement and xfld=dx.
The GR field lists funding
information pertinent to the document.
To view electronic images,
you will need the file name of the image (from the IM field), the system
location of stored images, and a workstation equipped with Adobe Acrobat
Reader.
The IN field lists the instruments used in the cited research study.
The LA field contains the
language in which the document was published originally.
MJ Major subject descriptor

*PY Year
This field contains the year in which the document was published. It can be used to limit a search to a single year or to a range of years.

The RV field contains bibliographic
information leading to reviews of the document. To search for records that
contain this text, limit your search with the statement and xfld=rv.
This field indicates a specific category of nursing. You can search for a category name or its two-letter code. For example, you can search for the category case-management with the search case-managemnet in sa or cm in sa. Use hyphens when searching for multi-word categories.
You can search using the field label (SA) or select a category from the Special Interest Current Awareness field-specific index.
The following are possible categories in this field. In each category, journal articles will be determined by the scope of the journal and by the content of the articles.
CM case-management
CC critical-care
EC emergency-care
GC gerontological-care
HC home-health-care
OC oncologic-care

Subheadings appear in two different places in a record, the Descriptors (DE) field and the Subheadings (SH) field. In the SH field, subheadings are stripped from their main headings and can be searched independently. Use this field when you want to identify all records containing a subheading, regardless of the main heading used. Multi-word subheadings should be hyphenated. There are two types of subheadings: Topical and Age Group subheadings.
Topical subheadings include:

The serial identifier is
a unique, nine-digit number assigned by the National Library of Medicine
(NLM) to represent a specific journal title. It is useful for ordering
articles through NLM's DOCLINE system. It is rarely used for searching.
This field contains the ISSN
for the source journal
This field includes the complete bibliographic citation for all article, pamphlet, dissertation, and book records. Article records include full journal title, title abbreviation, volume/issue number, publication date, number of cited references, number of suggested readings, and page ranges. Pamphlet records also contain unique pamphlet numbers and book records cite publishers. Dissertation records include the university and the degree received.
A journal title may be searched either in full or by its standard abbreviation. In either case, it must be entered as a hyphenated, "bound" phrase, exactly as it appears in the Index. If there is any doubt about the correct form, consult the Index or truncate the title.
All other elements in the
source field are searchable and need not be bound with hyphens. Individual
elements may be searched alone or in combination using operators.
The TC field covers the journal
articles, books or proceedings records. Included information is author,
title, pagination, source, and if applicable the CINAHL accession number.
To search for records that contain this text, limit your search with the
statement and xfld=tc.
Search titles using either single words or multi-word phrases. Use the truncation symbol (*) to search plurals and variant word endings. Numbers are searchable as words or as numeric characters, depending on the form used in the record; to be comprehensive, use both forms.
Exclude punctuation from your search.
If an article is in a foreign
language, the language will appear in parentheses at the end of the title.
TX Full text display
only
The full text of the published
standard of nursing practice. To search for records that contain this text,
limit your search with the statement and xfld=tx.
The update code is a four-digit
number representing the year and month in which a record was added to the
database. It allows you to restrict your search to records entered during
the most recent update, and thereby keep current on topics of continuing
interest. This field is range searchable.
*XFLD Extra Fields
The XFLD field lets you narrow your search to only those records that contain abstracts, full text, references, reviews, research instruments, images, tables of contents, or document delivery links.
For example, to retrieve
only records with abstracts for the topic "diabetes," type: diabetes and
xfld=ab.
