Indexes/Abstracts in Chemistry

Chemical Abstracts Online

The major index/abstract to the world's literature of chemistry and chemical engineering. During these restricted times campus users may access the following files:
CA -- Chemical Abstracts 1907-date
CAOLD -- Chemical Abstracts references covering 1907 through 1966 -- incomplete file which is not indexed very well
REG -- Registry File -- a chemical structure and dictionary database of substances identified by the Chemical Abstracts Service Registry System -- currently contains nearly 36 million chemical substances
CIN -- Chemical Industry Notes - a bibliographic database covering business news since 1974 in all areas of the chemical industry
LCA -- Learning CA file designed to help you learn how to use CA -- a very small subset of CA makes up the file
LREG -- Learning Registry file -- a companion file to LCA
It is strongly recommended that you download and/or print the following guides to searching in the Chemical Abstracts Service databases:
Using CAS Databases on STN -- a basic introduction to searching Chemical Abstracts on STN
Using the CAS Registry file on STN -- how to search the Registry file by chemical name and molecular formula
Using Native Commands to Search Chemical Abstracts Online -- a brief guide to STN's command language
**A key to using the CAS databases is the CAS Registry Number, a unique identifier for chemical compounds. See How to Find CAS Registry Numbers for Chemical Compounds for print and electronic sources of registry numbers.
There are other guides and training information on the CAS Learning Center - STN Resources page.

Searchable database of 3500 compounds. You may search by name, chemical formula, registry number or substructure. Also has links to Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).
Chemicool Periodic Table(http://wild-turkey.mit.edu/Chemicool/)
Clickable periodic table containing extensive information about the elements; e.g., atomic number, atomic weight, melting point, heat of fusion, ionization energies, oxidation numbers, appearance, isotopes, radius, etc. Also contains a link to Encyclopedia Britannica articles about each element.
Chemistry from About.com (http://chemistry.about.com/science/chemistry/)
Also has a search engine that will search only the chemistry portion of the About.com site.
Chemistry Information on the Internet(http://hackberry.chem.trinity.edu/cheminf.html)
A useful compilation of chemistry resources from Steven Bachrach of Trinity University.
Chemistry.org: Science that Matters - brought to you by the American Chemical Society (http://www.acs.org/portal/Chemistry)
The American Chemical Society's Web Site provides information on ACS products and services.
College of Chemistry at UC Berkeley(http://chemistry.berkeley.edu/index.shtml)
The Useful Links page has links to the Periodic Table, Common Weights and Measures, movies of vibrational modes of benzene, movies of interesting chemical reactions, and a temperature conversion calculator.
Fundamental Physical Constants (http://www.chemie.fu-berlin.de/chemistry/general/constants.html)
A listing of basic physical constants such as Avogadro's Number, the Boltzmann constant, the speed of light, and the mass of an electron.
Periodic Table of the Elements(http://pearl1.lanl.gov/periodic/)
Another clickable periodic table which contains information about each element's history, forms, sources, compounds, isotopes, uses, costs, handling, etc.
WWW Chemicals (http://www.chem.com/catalogs/)
A searchable database of chemical catalogs for many chemical companies. It may be searched by chemical name, CAS Registry Number, field of expertise, molecular formula, etc.
WebElements periodic table of the elements - the periodic table on the World-Wide Web(http://www.shef.ac.uk/~chem/web-elements/)
Another clickable periodic table created at the University of Sheffield. You may choose the WebElements Scholar Edition (for students at universities and schools) or the WebElements Professional Edition (for professional scientists).

Electronic Journals

ChemConnect Chemistry Journals Page (http://www.chemconnect.com/library/journals/index.html)
This list, which contains over 500 links to various chemistry journals, is maintained by ChemConnect, a pioneering publisher and chemical service provider to the chemical industry.  It is comprehensive and is kept up-to-date -- you can be notified via email when new items are added to the page.

Resources on Hazardous or Toxic Chemicals

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (http://atsdr1.atsdr.cdc.gov:8080/atsdrhome.html)
This agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services' Pub lic Health Service has a searchable database, Internet HazDat, of information on hazardous substances, sites and contaminants. You may also search all documents on ATSDR's WWW Server.
Envirofacts Master Chemical Integrator (EMCI) Chemical References Web Pages(http://www.epa.gov/enviro/html/emci/chemref/index.html)
Documents from the EPA summarizing the toxicity of hazardous substances. The documents may include exposure limits, health hazard information, workplace controls and practices, handling and storage, ecological effects, persistence in the environment, and bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms.  Envirofacts Master Chemical Integrator (EMCI) is used to integrate the varied chemical identifications used in four program system components currently available in Envirofacts. EMCI uses an internal identification system that is based on Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) numbers and names as a cross reference to link chemicals in AFS (Aerometric Information Retrieval System/AIRS Facility Subsystem), PCS (Permit Compliance System), RCRIS (Resource Conservation and Recovery Information System) and TRIS (Toxics Release Inventory System).
EXtension TOXicology NETwork (EXTOXNET) (http://ace.ace.orst.edu/info/extoxnet/)
Provides a variety of information about pesticides through a cooperative effort of UC Davis, Oregon State University, Cornell University, and Michigan State University.
Hazardous Chemical Database(http://ull.chemistry.uakron.edu/erd/)
Searchable database of more than 1300 hazardous chemicals. Data includes names, synonyms, formula, physical data, NFPA ratings, DOT guides and registry numbers (CAS, DOT, RTECS, EPA).
Material Safety Data Sheets (http://www.phys.ksu.edu/area/jrm/Safety/msds.html)
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are provided by manufacturers of chemicals and provide information on the proper handling of the chemical. Physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point, etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage and disposal information is usually included. This is a listing of several sites which have databases of MSDSs and most are searchable by chemical name and/or CAS Registry Number. There is even a link to MSDSs for Xerox toners and inks.
