Rand, Donna and Toni Trent Parker. Black Books Galore! - Guide to Great African American Children's Books about Boys. (E 185 R362 2001)

Weiss, Jacqueline Shachter. Profiles in Children's Literature: Discussions with Authors, Artists, and Editors. Scarecrow (PS 490 W45 2001). About 70 people are included in this very readable volume based on videotaped interviews beginning in the 1970s. Hard to put it down!

Zipes, Jack. Sticks and Stones: The Troublesome Success of Children's Literature from Slovenly Peter to Harry Potter. Routledge (PN 1009 A1 Z57 2001). Seven revised unpublished talks, one revised published essay and the previously unpublished or spoken "postscript" which is the best thing I've seen on Harry Potter to date.

This is in a publisher's series "children's literature and culture" edited by Jack Zipes.

Trimbur, John, ed. Popular Literacy: Studies in Cultural Practices and Poetics. University of Pittsburgh Press (PN 56 P55 P67 2001). 14 essays by different authors, less directly related to children's literature, but interesting nonetheless.

Westfahl, Gary. Science Fiction, Children's Literature, and Popular Culture: Coming of Age in Fantasyland. Greenwood (PS 374 S35 W44 2000). 11 essays by Westfahl, with the two most closely connected ones being "Mystery of the Amateur Detectives: The Early Days of the Hardy Boys" and "Giving Horatio Alger Goosebumps, Or, From Hardy Boys to Hapless Boys: The Changing Ethos of Juvenile Series Fiction."
