HSU Library - New Books about Children's Literature, November 1998

Children's and Young Adult Literature...New Books in the HSU Library, November 1998, compiled by Joan Berman

Cullinan, Bernice E. and Lee Galda. Literature and the Child. Harcourt Brace. (Z 1037 C946 1998) This fourth edition of a standard text is filled with extras: many color illustrations, samples of childrens' writing, author profiles, teaching ideas, and more. The final chapter covers "Implementing a Literature Curriculum." There is a companion volume, Language, Literacy and the Child which I have just ordered.

Horning, Kathleen T. From Cover to Cover: Evaluating and Reviewing Children's Books. HarperCollins. (PN 98 B7 H67 1997) This is a wonderfully informative must read for anyone seriously interested in children's literature. At the same time it provides an excellent introduction to newcomers to children's literature through the lens of the book review. I'd consider using it as a text for a class - in fact, I see a great possibility for a Redwood Writing Project endeavor?!

Nordstrom, Ursula. Dear Genius: The Letters of Ursula Nordstrom, collected and edited by Leonard S. Marcus. HarperCollins. (Z 73 N68 A4 1998) A fascinating view of the woman who published such authors as Margaret Wise Brown, E.B. White, Garth Williams, Ruth Krauss, Crockett Johnson, Charlotte Zolotow, Maurice Sendak, Mary Stolz, Tomi Ungerer, Louise Fitzhugh, Else Minarik, Russell Hoban, John Steptoe, and Shel Silverstein during her time as director of Harper's Department of Books for Boys and Girls (1940-63).
