HSU Library - New Books about Children's Literature, October 2000

Children's and Young Adult Literature...New Books in the HSU Library, October 2000, compiled by Joan Berman

The children's literature titles:

Crew, Hilary S. Is It Really Mommie Dearest? Daughter-Mother Narratives in Young Adult Fiction. Scarecrow (PS 374 M547 C74 2000). "In this study, I examine how relationships between adolescent girls and their mothers are represented in one hundred young adult novels plus short stories selected from the category of books marketed by publishers for an audience of young adult readers and published between the years 1965-1998." Fascinating collection including a chapter on the fairy tale re-tellings of Snow White and Rapunzel for young adults and one on the African American daughter-mother narrative with a discussion of Nancy Farmer's A Girl Named Disaster.

Dresang, Eliza T. Radical Change: Books for Youth in a Digital Age. H.W. Wilson Company (PN 1009.5 T43 D74 1999) The best way to get a feel for this one is to check out the website: slis-one.lis.fsu.edu/radicalchange.

Hearne, Betsy Gould. Choosing Books for Children: A Commonsense Guide. University of Illinois (Z 1037 A1 H42 1999) A wonderful, thoughtful, mature revision of an earlier work. Selected annotated bibliographies with each chapter.

Hoban, Russell. A Russell Hoban Omnibus. Indiana University Press (PS 3558 O336 R78 1999) A treat for anyone who's ever read any of his work.

Murphy, G. Ronald. The Owl, the Raven, & the Dove: the Religious Meaning of the Grimms' Magic Fairy Tales. Oxford University Press (GR 166 M87 2000) Covers five tales in depth: Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty.

Nikolajeva, Maria. From Mythic to Linear: Time in Children's Literature. Children's Literature Association and Scarecrow (PN 1009.5 T55 N55 2000) In depth literary study, well worth pursuing. It relies heavily on Propp, Jung and food.

Soter, Anna O. Young Adult Literature & the New Literary Theories: Developing Critical Readers in Middle School. Teachers College Press (LB 1632 S68 1999)

Two titles more for teacher prep:

Advances in Teacher Education Volume 5: What Counts as Knowledge in Teacher Education? Ablex (LB 1715 W45 1999)

Craver, Kathleen W. Using Internet Primary Sources to Teach Critical Thinking Skills in History. Greenwood Press (D 16.2 C79 1999)

And a few titles related to California Gold Rush, not especially children's literature, but I know several of you are interested in this topic:
