Borrowing Library Materials

Most of our bookstacks are open to the public, and in-library use of materials does not require an HSU ID Card. In-library use of some protected collections require a valid HSU Library ID card.

In general, Library borrowing is available to anyone age 18 or over who is either affiliated with the University or a member of the local community. The online HSU Library Catalog, which contains access information for most of the resources housed in the Library, may be searched from any location.

Checkout of all allowable Library items and materials is done at the Checkout Desk, located in the Library lobby and staffed at all hours that the Library is open.

See additional borrowing and renewal guidelines for students, staff, faculty, community users and alumni.

Renewals

In general, items from the main stacks on the 2nd and 3rd floors may be renewed three times, upon request. See renewal guidelines for graduate students, staff, faculty, community users, and alumni in the User Information box to the right.

Many special material categories are NOT renewable: CDs, videos/DVDs, Children's Literature and Curriculum Collections, Humboldt County Collection and Archives, government documents, and periodicals. Items which another campus borrower has requested are also not renewable. For renewal of Interlibrary Loan materials see the Interlibrary Loan link.

Renewals of HSU Library materials may be performed online, by telephone, or in person at the Checkout Desk. The new due date will be one additional loan period from the date of renewal.

Online Renewals

To access a list of your library materials, click on Renew a Book. You will be asked to enter the barcode number from the back of your HSU ID card (starts with 2 0300 00--- ----). Enter these numbers without the spaces, and then your last name. A list of items checked out to you will appear, and a box at the left of each item can be clicked to select items you wish to renew. Click on the "Renew Items" button at the bottom of the screen to proceed with the renewal. At this point a new "Renewal Status" column appears to the right of the item list, indicating a new due date for each item if it has been successfully renewed. Be sure to verify renewal by checking this column. Reasons for non-renewal include: hold placed by another borrower, item excessively overdue, item not renewable. Be sure to click on "logout" button at top of screen when you are finished, to prevent access by other users to your account information. Call the Circulation Office at 826-3431 with any questions.

Telephone Renewals

Items may be renewed by telephone at (707) 826-3431 when the Library is open. Have your HSU ID handy; you will be asked for the barcode number on the back of the ID.

In-Person Renewals

Items may also be renewed at the Checkout Desk, with or without bringing in the books. Again, your HSU ID Card barcode will be required to access your checkout record.
