Using Information Ethically
Exercises

If you are working with this OWL in a class, your instructor will tell you which style manual to use for these exercises. If you are working on your own, use either the MLA or APA style manual. You may do these exercises individually, in pairs, or in small groups.

The best way to learn how to cite different kinds of sources is to practice. These exercises give you a chance to practice writing citations for several different types of information sources that you are likely to use in your undergraduate research.

  1. Find five books, either in the HSU Library or in your personal collection. One or two may be textbooks. Write the correct citation for each book.

  2. Browse in the current periodicals on the second floor of the Library and find one article in each of three magazines or journals. Write the correct citation for each article.

  3. Find three fulltext articles in Academic Search Elite, and write the correct citation for each article.

  4. Use the HSU Library Catalog to find a video in the HSU Library. (See How Can I Use The HSU Library Catalog To Find Videos And DVDs? If you need help with this.) Write the correct citation to the video.

  5. Find an article in an encyclopedia in the Reference Collection on the first floor of the Library. Write the correct citation to the article. (Don't limit yourself to the general encyclopedias at the beginning of the Reference Collection. There are specialized encyclopedias for most subject areas.)

  6. Find five Websites. Write correct citations for them.
