Library Tour and Orientation
Exercises

  1. This exercise is for a class to do.

The instructor assigns areas of the Library to individual students (or pairs), who then prepare a brief explanation of the service or collection in their assigned area. Use the information in this and other OWLS or printed library handouts to prepare your explanations (or ask questions of librarians or staff members as a last resort). The class tours the library building, with students (or pairs) taking turns as "guides."

Instructors: please call at least a week in advance and notify the Information Services office, Ext. 4953, of when you will be bringing your class to the Library for their tour. You may ask students to turn in a written copy of their explanations as well as to give them orally during the tour. You may have students prepare a "library handbook" from the combined explanation texts.

  2. Browse through the Glossary of Library and Research Terms and choose three terms. Restate their definitions in your own words. Explain how understanding each term could help you as a researcher.
