The students of Humboldt State University's Advanced Oral Interpretation class proudly present "Outliers" on stage! The performance will be an oral interpretation/reader's theater of Malcolm Gladwell’s "Outliers: the Story of Success." The show begins at 7 pm on Friday April 26 and Saturday April 27, in the studio theater located on the second floor of the theater arts building on the HSU campus. "Outliers" is an examination of what truly makes people successful and how they differ from the rest of us. The show is entirely student run and free for the whole community. Doors will open 6:45 and seating is limited!

There will be an open dress rehearsal on April 25 that is open to the public. Come by and watch the cast practice this unique, reader’s theater version of Outliers. The following two nights, Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th will be official performances.

This creative interpretation of Outliers was scripted and will be performed by the students of the Advanced Oral Interpretation, Comm 480. Come down and support HSU's communication department and the HSU/CR Book of the Year program.

Local Screening - AGE OF CHAMPIONS Wednesday, April 24, 10:30am, at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center. Age of Champions tells the story of 5 competitors who sprint, leap, and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics.  You'll meet a 100-year-old champion, 86-year-old pole vaulter, annd hard-hitting grandmothers who triumph over the limitations of age. The filmmakers have partnered with organizations including the National Institute on Aging, Osher Center, and President's Council on Fitness to share the entire documentary for free! You are invited to watch this new PBS documentary between April 18 and April 28, 2013.

Throughout April the HSU Library provides trial access to Archives Unbound, an online collection of historical documents supporting research and study needs of scholars and college students. Archives Unbound covers a broad range of topics from the Middle Ages forward—from Witchcraft to World War II to twentieth-century political history. Please try it and let us know what you think.

Dr. Barbara Curiel, professor of Critical Race, Gender & Sexuality Studies and English recently won the 2012 Philip Levine Prize for her forthcoming poetry collection MEXICAN JENNY AND OTHER POEMS (to be published in Fall 2013). Dr. Curiel has recently published poems in the journals: KWELI, HUIZSACHE, and THE ACENTOS REVIEW, as well as in the chapbook anthology MIRAGE. Her poems are included in the 2011 collection CANTAR DE ESPEJOS: POESIA TESTIMONIAL CHICANA POR MUJERES published in Mexico. Please join us for a poetry reading, Q & A, and refreshments to celebrate Dr. Curiel's accomplishment, 3-4pm, Friday, April 19 in the Library's Fishbowl (Room 209)!

The Pan-Asian Pacific Islander Perspectives Festival, sponsored by HSU APASA (Asian Pacific Islander American Student Alliance) is a weeklong celebration of API people in our area, their perspectives and experiences. The HSU Library is providing a 30 day trial to Web of Science February 18 – March 17 in anticipation of a system-wide offer to subscribe to this major multidisciplinary citation database. Although named Web of Science scholarly research in all disciplines is covered. The database indexes cover to cover papers 12,000 high impact research journals and papers from 12,000 conference proceedings on an annual basis. Beyond subject keyword and cited reference searching the database offers a unique set of application tools:

• “Analyze Tool” allows you to discover research trends and patterns; gain insight into emerging fields of research; and identify leading researchers, institutions, and journals.
• “Citation Report” creates formatted reports to view citation information for individuals or institutions.
• “Citation Maps” allows you to visualize citation connections and discover an article's citation relationships.

What helps an addict recover? Or allows an abused child to love and trust again? How do today’s college students definte “success?” And who are the real “outliers” in our community?

For the answer to these questions, everyone is invited to hear the winning Student “Story of Success” presentations on: Friday evening, 2/22/13, at 7pm in the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka.

And the following evening in Crescent City: Saturday, 2/23/13, at 6pm in the library on CR’s Del Norte campus, 883 W. Washington Blvd. in Crescent City.

These events celebrate the CR/HSU 2012/13 Book of the Year, Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcolm Gladwell. Topics range from publishing a novel through Kickstarter through making a life and a living by joining a band in a foreign country to surveying fellow students about their definitions of success and creating an original zine from those responses. Both events are free and open to the public.

On Monday, February 18, 12-1pm in the Lib 121 Computer Lab Robert Sathrum will offer a training workshop on the use of Zotero, a free web-based tool for saving and organizing citations and creating bibliographies. With Zotero, you can:

• Collect citations from article databases and websites.
  
• Organize your sources into collections with tags to quickly sort and search for articles.
• Capturing related PDFs, files, or images; or linking to available fulltext.
• Cite with ease as you effortlessly create bibliographies in Word.

You don't have to wait for an open lab station. Now you can print over the wireless network to the printers in Library 122 and on the 3rd floor of the BSS building (outside of BSS 313) as easily as if you were in a computer lab. Your C-Card will be charged in the usual way, and the same provisos apply about refunds and making sure to print the correct documents. Install the software and follow the directions to print from your laptop.  Need help?  See the Help Desk in Library 120.

California's Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constituion is the first day in U.S. history named after an Asian American. It is celebrated every January 30th on Mr. Korematsu's birthday. Fred Korematsu was a national civil rights hero, who argued that the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII was unjust. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998, the nation's highest civilian honor, from President Bill Clinton. To remember the importance of preserving civil liberties, come to HSU's first Fred Korematsu Day celebration on Thursday, 1/31 from 4 to 7:30pm in the Kate Buchanan Room. OF CIVIL WRONGS AND RIGHTS: FRED KOREMATSU STORY and SEARCHLIGHT SERENADE will be screened. There will be a panel discussion with several Japanese-Americans interned during WWII as well. Food and Snack will be provided and this is a free event hosted by the HSU's Multicultural Center.

Historical logging photos from the Library Humboldt Room continue to fuel newspaper articles.  The latest is Ericson photo Korbel School on stump #2 which is featured in the Portland Oregonian as clones from this Fieldbrook stump will be planted near Port Orford on December 4.
