December 2016

HSU will observe the annual Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution with documentary films and a discussion of the history of Japanese American World War II internment camps on Monday, Jan. 30 at 4pm in Library's Fishbowl. The public is invited. The documentaries are "Pilgrimage" directed by Tadashi Nakamura, "Days of Waiting" directed by Steven Okazaki, and "Children of the Campus" directed by Stephen Holsapple. This observance marks the state of California's decision in 2010 to designate January 30 as the annual anniversary honoring Korematsu for his lifelong fight for civil rights. In the years before Korematsu's death in 2005, he served on the Constitution Project's bipartisan Liberty and Security Committee. The project is a think tank that advocates rule of law and criminal justice programs.
