World's largest wildlife collection!
Wildlife Worldwide is the world's largest index to literature on wild mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians -- over 345,000 full, bibliographic records! The databases in this exclusive collection offer a global perspective and together form the ultimate resource on wildlife information. NISC's unique composite records feature ensures access to all the information without duplication (see below for details). All aspects of wildlife and wildlife management are covered in this comprehensive volume. Approximately 15,000 records are added per year.
Detailed indexing & well-defined abstracts
Extensive keyword indexing permits very flexible subject searching, and taxonomic
and geographic identifiers are especially helpful. The geographic identifiers include
global and broad regional levels as well as specific localities. You can search by species
in a province, state, county, or even a community, park or lake.
Wildlife Worldwide includes these databases:
Wildlife Review Abstracts (1971 and earlier - present) -- NISC produces and has expanded coverage in Wildlife Review Abstracts, formerly Wildlife Review, which until 1996 was produced by the U.S. National Biological Service. Over 267,000 citations provide excellent coverage on all aspects of wildlife. Major topic areas include studies of individual species, habitat types, hunting, economics, wildlife behavior, management techniques, diseases, parasites, and more. More than 1,500 sources include journals, monographs, proceedings of conferences and symposia, government reports, grey literature, books, theses, and dissertations. Many are not indexed by other databases. About 8,000 records are added per year. Abstracts added from Sept. '96 onward!
Swiss Wildlife Information Service (SWIS, 1974-present) -- Federal
Office of Environment, Forests & Landscape and the University of Zurich
SWIS provides more than 79,000 records drawn from over 400 journals in addition to books,
reports of congresses, dissertations, and theses. A main database on wild birds and
mammals is supplemented by special files on protected animals and wildlife
interaction with traffic, disturbance, and agriculture. Document
delivery and the Keyword-Index of Wildlife Research (annual, 350-400 pages) are
available from SWIS.
Wildlife Database (1960-present) -- Fish & Wildlife Reference
Service
Ninety percent of the citations in this file of 20,800 records are drawn from unpublished
research reports, field studies, and surveys from U.S. state agencies. Document delivery
is available.
BIODOC (1970-89) -- National University of Costa Rica
BIODOC provides 6,800 citations with emphasis on Central and South American fauna. Some of
the source literature is unique to the region.
Waterfowl & Wetlands Database ("Duckdata," 1968-1994) --
U.S. National Biological Survey
Duckdata provides 11,200 citations with a valuable focus on game birds and their habitats.
The coverage of North American theses and dissertations is excellent.
Composite records
Special software-created composite records resolve the problem of
duplication among files. These "super records" provide all the information
shared by two or more source records, plus any data that is unique. You can view all the
relevant information without having to scroll through any redundant citations.
