Arts & Humanities
good mservice...more and current resources needed
Arts & Humanities
Overall, I am very pleased with the services offered at the Library; as well as the comforting atmosphere it creates, causes studies to progress more easily.
Arts & Humanities
Some of the copy machines seem to have difficulties often. On the weekends, not many workers there and it is difficult to get help.
Arts & Humanities
I have had some difficutly with the posted information on Oncores, like not all of it was up, I was not able to get to the page I needed, etc. Also, it would be great if there were something that helped me to know how to discern between reliable sources and unreliable Arts & Humanities
i wish there could be a place to eat food where it is quiet. i also wish there were more rooms to study in with groups of people. i wish the chairs were more comfortable also.
Arts & Humanities
It is incredibly disturbing to me that the library is not getting the funds for new books. New and updated information is vitally important for making the most of our education and to be limited in this area is a major drawback to the school.
Arts & Humanities
Mary Kay and Joan on the third floor are AMAZING when I need to research something!!! Others are also wonderful. They all make researching seem so easy and they really seem to care about my success. THANK YOU!!!
Arts & Humanities
The library is a good resource and I am satisfied for the most part, except for the inordinate amount of cell phones ringing and people talking on their cell phones. If I had one wish, it would be cracking down on cell phone use in the library. Somehow giving repercussions to those who use their phones in the quiet zones of the library, mainly the 2nd floor.
Arts & Humanities
I would like to see the library open later. I don't know how many other people want that though.
Arts & Humanities
I love our library.
Arts & Humanities
The computer help and referance books (ie. Adobe, Macromedia, and Final Cut Pro manuals) have to be updated more often in order to be of use. There is a lack of contemporary art, and even more so, graphic design/illustration technique books. I think that the databases/journals are extremely useful; I would love to have more of the electronic books .
Arts & Humanities
The only trouble that I have encountered with our library have been 1)limited access to some journals etc... because of our size, however inter-library loans are typically offered and 2) limited staff to answer questions, particularly with microfiche etc... But overall, keep up the good work!
Arts & Humanities
Maybe make it a little easier to navigate the library, and perhaps another PC lab.
Arts & Humanities
I rarely use the library, but I answered how I felt accordingly
Arts & Humanities
Generally, the library and its services are pretty good - the student staff working at the main desk and in the computer help center need alot more training and in the computer help center - training in how to be polite and courteous!!!
Arts & Humanities
thanks for all you do!
Arts & Humanities
I am happy with the quality of resources supplied by the HSU Library.
Arts & Humanities
i most appreciate the computer lab's double sided printing
Arts & Humanities
In the three years I have been attending HSU I have yet to be disappointed by the services offered by the Library. The staff has always been willing and able to assist me with my individual needs in accesing library services and consistently do so with a smile.
Arts & Humanities
Love the library but I wish there were more movies.
Arts & Humanities
Could use more up-to date books.
Arts & Humanities
I'm glad you can't just sleep in the library any more. Good job!
Arts & Humanities
more updated cds and sheet music collections would be appreciated by the music major community.
Arts & Humanities
the library is cool
Arts & Humanities
The staff is very helpful when it comes to searching for my needs. I enjoy having textbooks at hand with reserve copies.
Arts & Humanities
The library would be able to better meet the needs of the students if it was better funded by the CSU system.
Arts & Humanities
id like to see more journals available online in full text and i am disappointed that I cannot still use disks in the library computers. I like that it's all recycled paper, and the attendants have been very helpful. I feel as if the library computers should be available to the public unconditionally, because we need an educated community to thrive in.
Arts & Humanities
The only irritating thing is that when online and using some of the resources, they time out... I cannot read lenghty articles in 15 min....
Arts & Humanities
the late hours are enjoyed . Thank you dedicated library staff.
Arts & Humanities
I've never gotten satisfactory service at the library. I have never been able to print anything there and I have never gotten my questions answered. I have been treated rudely (angry tone of voice and use of words) and given dead-end "I don't know" responses to some of my questions, with no suggestion of where I could go to find someone who might be able to help me.
Arts & Humanities
I have received some helpful emails from library staff in response to some of my queries. However, some have gone unanswered, for instance a question about the Shuster arial image collection. I would perfer if email addresses were listed on the library webpage (even if they were munged so spam doesn't become a probelm), instead of requiring users to submit queries in a web-form, which imedes efficient workflow.
Arts & Humanities
The biggest problem I feel with the library is its ability to access online articles through databases. I am well aware of the limits to funding, but in my field of research, much of the information I find most useful for my studies tends to come from online sources. The ILL system works incredibly well, but I get a little frustrated in having to deal with ILL instead of having an opportunity where the information is accessible when I need it, particularly when it comes to materiel/articles to be found in the online databases.
Arts & Humanities
This is a great library - however there are some unsavory non-students who make the library smelly and a bit scary. Particularly in the stacks or seeing what type of unwashed person just sat in the seat you want.
Arts & Humanities
I love the big size of the library, but it lacks up-to-date publications on current issues, diversity included. (This is probably a funding issue)
Arts & Humanities
I love the use of artwork and paintings in the library. I would love to see more of that. =)
Arts & Humanities
On the last wednesday of this past semester, when the library was overflowing with students doing last minute research, studying, and finishing term papers, there was just a single employee on duty. No lab techs, no librarians, just one overworked circulation worker. I think that not having sufficient employees at the busiest and most crucial time in the semester is bound to cause problems.
Arts & Humanities
All staff is very helpful and pleasant.
Arts & Humanities
gimmie an ipod!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 preeeeeetty please
Arts & Humanities
over all I am happy with the library, maybe needs more new books.
Arts & Humanities
I love the HSU library!
Arts & Humanities
A lot of times the staff seems disinterested. I know its a library and theres not much going on, but that shouldn't effect their professionalism.
Arts & Humanities
I don't feel that the entire library is comfortable for just going in and reading. The first floor is nice and comfortable but it is the loudest and so I wish there was another quiet comfortable space.
Arts & Humanities
buy new books
Arts & Humanities
The Library is awesome.
Arts & Humanities
I enjoy using the library resources and I am happy that we now have a food friendly area. I wish we had a food friendly area on each floor. I think that some areas of the library could be cleaner. For example, the couches provided look dirty and grimy.
Arts & Humanities
I like how the library has those cases that hold different events going on around campus and the community. They are always interesting and informative.
Arts & Humanities
Your ILL program is great.
Arts & Humanities
I am very satisfied wth the library staff overall, but my only complaint is that sometimes when working on the scond floor with my personal computer, the employees in the media center are generally too noisy.
Arts & Humanities
Seems like you are making a good effort to meet the needs of the students.
Arts & Humanities
More cute girls working the front end! Oh, and more quality, recent books. Let us borrow videos for a day longer and the same goes with journals! The computer help center is GGRREEAAATTT. why cant you access hotmail from the main hall of computers. please put up a sign that states that shoes are required. the help desk is so amazingly helpful! more cool art along the walls, all of them! what about putting more art along the stwo stair cases, they are so cold! the furniture is getting kinda worn. the copy machines are kinda crappy and old and prone to jamming. kudos on duplex printing!
Arts & Humanities
I would say that overall the Library at HSU is good, sometimes the student workers have "attitudes" and the Libray has not bought very many new books, but I have found the the ILL systems works well, so it is not a problem to get a book that the Library does not have (and I understand about the restraints the buget may place)
Arts & Humanities
underfunded, understaffed, outdated, and unappreciated.
Arts & Humanities
The people that work at the library are friendly and helpful. The availability of computer labs is pretty good, although there are often many people playing online and making those who have important things to do wait for no good reason. There are not enough new books although, and it is hard to get access to many up-to-date materials that I would like to access. It is very annoying to have to use interlibrary loan every time I need access to a more current book or journal.
Arts & Humanities
Really appreciate the library, but my only complaint is the lack of new library books because of limited funding, library funding really should be a higher priority in the California university system
Arts & Humanities
I enjoy coming to the library, but we lack enough computers and subscriptions to online peer reviewed journals
Arts & Humanities
Many times when I need help with something there is no one at the reference desk( which there should be more than one of) and the students working at the front desk know absolutly nothing about where anything is in the library.
Arts & Humanities
the library is nice and quiet
Arts & Humanities
I've been pleased overall with the services that the HSU library offers. I know it's been difficult with all of the budget cuts. Thank you!
Arts & Humanities
I am also in the library either to study or doing research for papers and I have always been able to find a librarian or staff happy to assit me if I needed. I do wish that the library was able to get the funds to update its book collection.
Arts & Humanities
The library should be geared towards more interactive learning
Arts & Humanities
i think the library doesn't have sufficient music variety. We have to borrow them from other CSU. Also, there are not enough magazines of interest.
Arts & Humanities
The library is wonderful and the employees are awesome!
Arts & Humanities
You have helped me many time when needed.
Arts & Humanities
generally helpfull.
Arts & Humanities
great library
Arts & Humanities
i don't know how meaningful my answers will actually be.
Arts & Humanities
The main problem I have with the library is the size of the collection. it is rather thin. But ILL helps to make up the slack, although the wait can be prohibitive.
Arts & Humanities
There is always an employee of the library willing to help those that need help.
Arts & Humanities
staff always extreamly helpful and friendly. i love this library. just wish there was more computers in labs, there is usually a line to use them.
Arts & Humanities
You know how you tape the metal strips to the top of dvds? that makes it so they don't play in many computers, including mine. Is there any other way to attach them? I have no problems with regular dvds from say, the video store.
Arts & Humanities
Although the staff is always willing to help, it often takes them a while to really point you in the right direction, they seem unfamiliar with areas in my major.
Arts & Humanities
I feel like the periodicals are oudated, and as a religious studies major I am somewhat disapointed with the lack of peer reviewed journals.
Arts & Humanities
work study or otherwise student workers at the circulation desk need to BE QUIET even when their friends are walking by and/or they want to look cool doing thier job. I have talked about this with MANY students who have noticed. and there is no justifiable excuse for our library budget cuts. there need to be books, journals and information of the such that is CURRENT. I am a Women's Studies major and the outdated section in our library has NEVER been of use to me. (except for a history paper once.......)
Arts & Humanities
I am looking at your web site. I will be transferring to Humboldt in the fall.
Arts & Humanities
I find that many of the books are severly out of date, and it disturbs me that we are unable to receive funding for new literature.
Arts & Humanities
i am glad you put the eating friendly area in but it is super trashy... more group friendly areas...
Arts & Humanities
One reason I was able to give positive responses to some of the above questions is that last Spring I had a training through my ENGL 120 class and a librarian, in how to do research. I was introduced to materials, web resources and online periodicals. I hope all students receive similar training. It was vastly helpful in geting me started.
Arts & Humanities
cool beans
Arts & Humanities
a very good library thanks.
Arts & Humanities
Needs more updated sheet music, also needs to ACTUALLY PUT MUSIC BOOKS IN THE RIGHT PLACE and RIGHT ORDER...I have seen workers just leave them in a pile on the shelf rather than filing away correctly.
Arts & Humanities
The personal service is always great. The librarians are always helpful and friendly but the technology is severly lacking and the library is hamstrung by the lack of new books. I understand this is not the library's fault but I feel like we are underfunded and thus undersupplied as students
Arts & Humanities
The Library could use a little revamping, but it definitly serves a purpose, and serves it well. The staff are firendly and knowledgable, and it is obvious that they are dedicated to keeping the library together.
Arts & Humanities
Everyone is always very nice and does their absolute best to help me. I am always in the library doing research and have found the staff to be very helpful.
Arts & Humanities
I LIKE THE LIBRARY BUT YOU COULD USE MORE COMPUTERS AND NEWER BOOKS AND MUSIC.
Arts & Humanities
Maybe the library could have monthy 1 hour workshops on how to use the library. Itd also be great if we had more $ to buy updated books, but thats not the library's fault. But i really like the movie rentals.
Arts & Humanities
Overall, I find the use of the Library very valuable for my education. The library is essential in my educational experience. The only complaint I have about the library is there are a lot of disruptions and it makes for difficult time concentrating (cell phones, conversations). Personally, I don't tell my peers to "keep it down" but I feel like a library is supposed to be a place of quiet study. I understand that there are "group" areas and designated "quiet" areas, but overall I find often a disruptive environment.
Arts & Humanities
Adequate.
Arts & Humanities
over all the library is the best place to go for quiet study time and research. but my biggest concern is the lack of new books. we need new books to learn new knowledge, ideas, and concepts. in order to make our library more efficient for the students and staff of HSU, we need to see new materials and new books. if our wonderful president wont fund our library then why not get some clubs and student organizations to get together and create a festival that will donate a portion of the proceeds to the library for new books and supplies.
Arts & Humanities
Good job, keep the real people, there is enough virtual resources.
Arts & Humanities
I have found the librarians to be helpful, positive and responsive. Staff in other areas have not provided as high a level of service.
Arts & Humanities
The service is usually great. I just think that more money needs to be put into buying books and journals. Why does every other CSU have the new book I needed for my anthropology class except HSU? Why can I not access the newest developments? It seems like all of our resources are between 10-20 years old, which makes it impossible for students to deal with the current trends without turning to google searches and ordering Amazon books.
Arts & Humanities
I feel more money needs to be given towards the library's budget. We need better access and more books, journals, etc. on our shelves.
Arts & Humanities
I think the library does a great job with helping people who come in to use the facilities. Every time I have a questions, they can answer it and seem happy to do so.
Arts & Humanities
i would appreciate a featured book or author that was interesting or original in some way, perhaps selected by staff as a favorite or something influential, historic, underground . . .
Arts & Humanities
i think that the library is one of the places i like to go and study the most. It is the most productive study environment that i have found. The resources are easily accessable and the staff is always friendly. thanks
Arts & Humanities
I want to see more art books in the library.
Arts & Humanities
In general, I find the library to be extremely useful. However, I would love to see more recent materials added. And it would be nice if the play section were expanded to give theater students more to work with.
Arts & Humanities
I think the librarians are wonderful, as well as some students. But many times, late at night, the students can't or unwilling to answer questions. Also, it seems impossible for the staff to keep the newspaper section current. Daily papers should be there daily, not a few days old.
Arts & Humanities
I work at the J and I go to the library after work and find it very helpful.
Arts & Humanities
The lack of up-to-date books (which I understand is a result of severe budget cuts and the administration's complete non-understanding of the purpose of a University Library) is a threat to all students who use the University Library. This deficiency presents a difficulty for me as a student to stay current with the developments in my field (art history). I rely upon the university library to provide a wide range of materials to support both my educational career and my evolution into a professional in my field. However the University Library has been a wonderful combination of excellent materials and a studious enviornment. The staff are always very helpful and cheerful, and a dependable resource when I am in need of their expertise.
Arts & Humanities
The library staff has always been very kind to me, also I would appreciate another computer lab on the second or third story.
Arts & Humanities
A person can usually request and receive spaces and services that are not readily available. I appreciate the "food friendly" area and the general courtesy of most library users who agree that the first floor is used for meeting space and not necessarily supposed to be "silent." To this same accord I appreciate the courtesy of library users who agree that the second and third floor are meant to be quiet study areas.
Arts & Humanities
The library services are very helpful and the only thing I would suggest is later hours. I know employment is an issue and the hours available are indeed sufficient, but it would be nice to have access for later into the evening and on weekends.
Arts & Humanities
A lot of the times the lights in the cubeicles go out and it can be bothersome, and it has a dirty feel to it also.
Arts & Humanities
The food-friendly area is a wonderful service, especially on rainy days.
Arts & Humanities
The help desk staff are extremely friendly and very good at helping me find what I need. The online journals are invaluable, but more access from remote locations (i.e. my home) would be great. Sometimes it's a hassle to have to come into the library just to print out an article. I also find that sometimes the quiet areas are noisy, which is annoying. But overall I think the library does a fantastic job.
Arts & Humanities
The library need more books, especially more recent books.
Arts & Humanities
It would be nice to have a center where digital tools were available for students to create multimedia and digital presentations - dv and photo editing, capture and render, dvd authoring, sound recording and editing, etc. Overall, library staff is very friendly and helpful, and have on occasion spent considerable time helping me to locate material for a project - materials sought for one project were never found, but the staff was nonetheless very dedicated in their efforts to help me find a suitable substitution.
Arts & Humanities
I really enjoy the library and the resources found there. I am pleased with the way things are, I think it works well.
Arts & Humanities
It is very difficult, almost impossible, to find a piece of music or cd as it is currently catalogued. I would like to think there is abetter way to do this. Perhaps music style such as classical, 20th century, etc. and then composer within those groups.
Arts & Humanities
I love the library but find it hard to get computer access when I need, otherwise it is one of the best libraries I have ever used.
Arts & Humanities
Good services. It is sometimes confusing to locate books.
Arts & Humanities
The library staff is very helpful and generally polite. However, the library lacks new books/current information, and electronically updated resources, which is not only sad, but causes students to rely more on online sources.
Arts & Humanities
From my experience the library has been a benificial resource in my needs for my various classes and I look forward to using it next year to do research for my senior project.
Arts & Humanities
i seriously doubt that such a short survey can effect any change in library policy, especially since decisions are based largely on financial concerns. also, many of the terms on this survey are quite vague or even irrelevant, such as "information skills" and "caring fashion" (i don't need employees to care; i don't want to form a relationship with these people, i just want them to do their job and help me when help is needed). it seems to me that you (the administration) should already know what is needed and how a quality library should be run, and i really hope you haven't payed an outside company to run this survey because that would be a terrific waste of our money and time. what makes a good library? knowledgable staff and updated technology. you don't need the students to tell you that. i'm very tired of the misdirected action here at hsu. if you are rational you should know what needs to be done, and all the expensive little vague suveys in the world cannot help you.
Arts & Humanities
Satisfied
Arts & Humanities
Overall I think our library does a good job with what they have (I understand the reality of being a state school whose tuitoions fees have gone up 30 percent in four years and budget has been slashed). The library web site enables me fairly easily to find the journals, database, books and other materials that I need, however I think that a short library guide, sheet or web guide designed for each specific major on resources available specifically relevant to each major would be ueseful. I say this becasue I know how to find information in a library and am willing to do the work to find it, however I don't see most lower division students seeking out information with a great amount of effort. Not enough classes or departments take their students to the library, so why not give each department something they can hand to their students. If I could pick up a piece of paper that listed all the relavent databases, journals, books, periodicals and other forms of media and resources available to me that specifically aided my study of theatre arts, imagine how useful that would be. The same can be said for a physics, geography, philosophy, queer studies, ethnic studies, or any other major on campus. Simple tools like these would raise my percieved level of service quite a bit. I also believe that these guides should be in web and paper form because some student prefer web information while others want a piece of paper they can take with them. And if it is a piece of paper, please tell students the basics steps to accessing the information and resources listed. Thanks so much for reading this gramatically atrocious comment. The other thing that I think would be useful is more then three older computers on the 2nd and third floor for accesing the library catalog. The third floor has three plus the few over by the humboldt room and the second floor has a similar configuration. Too often when I am on the third floor in the book stacks and I need to access the computers they are being used by people playing video games and watching downloaded movies, programs, or something of that nature.
Arts & Humanities
The last time I tried to use the Peterson's Guide in the library it was far out of date, along with other material in related areas.
Arts & Humanities
could use ongoing, monthly internet research/library research workshops. An hour now and again could greatly increase the utility of the library's resources....especially for the less computer savvy among us.
Arts & Humanities
never had a problem other than hours of operation
Arts & Humanities
perhaps another computer lab would bemore efficient at times
Arts & Humanities
The only draw back to the encouraged, research it yourself, ideals of the library, is that when that research ability comes to an end, the staff is most often not knowledgable enough to fill in the gaps.
Arts & Humanities
This library is way to loud, the loudest library I have ever been to. I am constantly having to ask people to lower their voices or electronic equipment, I wish that staff enforces noise levels more often. I don't alway want to find a dark corner to study in but find that those are the only constistently quiet places. People often have loud converstations anywhere.
Arts & Humanities
There is some quiet space in the library ... but not enough. The research staff is excellent as well as all the support staff.
Arts & Humanities
The first part of this survey was too complicated. Other than that, the library is my favorite. Too bad about lack of funding for new books, etc. Good couches for napping.
Arts & Humanities
keep up the good work!
Arts & Humanities
I find the music periodicals most useful, but there have been rumours that some of these publications will no longer be subscribed to. Please, please, Please do not stop getting music education periodicals.
Arts & Humanities
It would be helpful if it were a little easier to find resources at the library independently, i.e. using microfilm is practically impossible to figure out on your own. (It's not the use of the machines that's hard, but finding the call letters, articles, etc, especially since the big books for the microfilm newspapers are on the first floor.) Also, finding journal aritcles to use can be difficult. Some are online, some are shelved, and some don't seem to be available at all. The easier it is to locate resources, the more helpful the library is to students.
Arts & Humanities
The library should have more resources to serve students and members of the public. The school is for the benefit of all, and currently we are restricting the public's use of the resources. For example, computers and videos viewing (severly restricted) are open to the public but with many restrictions while these resources are under utilized. We need to be good members of the community.
Arts & Humanities
A very comfortable place to study and research.
Biological Sciences
this library far exceeds my personal standards for a university library
Biological Sciences
I'd be curious to know if there are any ways in which the library facilitates independent research skills. Are there classes, library tours. All library shelvers to desk to reference are very helpful and knowledgeable.
Biological Sciences
Overall, I am very pleased with the library, particularily since it is my refuge when the dormitories are just too loud. I use it primarily as a study environment as opposed to finding information and am glad that there is a place that offers various study environments (individual quiet spaces, group work, and food friendly especially).
Biological Sciences
The people at the reference desk have been very helpful locating resources and with information about interlibrary loans.
Biological Sciences
The transient population makes for an unpleasant library atmosphere.
Biological Sciences
My only real concern is that finding scientific journals and articles through the webpage can be difficult. I found that there were often more abstracts then whole articles available to me. Perhaps I should have sought more help from the librarians, though. Interlibrary loans of articles take too long sometimes.
Biological Sciences
I think you guys do a great job keep up the good work. Also I would like to point out in your survey you should request gender not sex. But is that really necissary for your survey to have? Thanks
Biological Sciences
The library is a great place to study with groups, just as long as there are rooms free to do so. Sometimes there are not enough rooms to hold all the groups, so we have to go someplace else to study. It'd be nice to have more group study areas here - places where we're sure not to disturb anybody around us with chatting back and forth about the subject we're discussing.
Biological Sciences
Library service and employees are excellent! I wish we had more quick access to journals/ full text articles, rather than having to order them on loan and wait.
Biological Sciences
Somtimes it is hard to get copies of recent journal articles
Biological Sciences
Sometimes I think the library is too stinky and dirty for extensive studying. In fact, it is the main reason that I avoid the library.
Biological Sciences
Partitioning of library based around acedemic pursuits (i.e. botany section, arts/music section) similar to childrens area but broadened to emcompass more areas so focus and ease of access to pertanant material can be more easily retrieved. As is it takes more time than I have just ot find what I'm looking for.
Biological Sciences
The online journal subscriptions could be more complete providing more access to more information.
Biological Sciences
It would be nice if media checkouts were just one day longer. This would give a student a whole day, not to mention that for students who come to school every other day (ex. mon + wed or tue + thur) due to work schedules, could actually take advantage of this service.
Biological Sciences
Some of the Biological science texts are very out of date. However, I still find them very useful.
Biological Sciences
i had a short info class of the library website from a librarian for eop seminar and found it extremely helpful and informative, now iknow if i search, or get help i can find ANYTHING i need for my research or classes through the website, and links, or interlibrary loans, etc. thanks!
Biological Sciences
The library is dooing a superb job and should keep up the good work.
Biological Sciences
The Staff at the information desk are AMAZING. I have been here for six years and have needed help with subjects related to obscure oceanography, to planning my trip abroad, to designing a childrens marine science curriculum. Their knowledge seems to be unlimited. THey are able to help you navigate the mysteries of online data bases. They are always interested and affable. They don't seem to let on the you are the tenth person they have helped today. I am exptremely satisfied with the staff. The copy machines suck. In my time of need, they were all broken, and the copy center was not open. For chist's sake, take out those old copy machines out on the coral sea and turn them into deep sea fish habitat. Maybe you've already done that, I haven't been to the library for a month or so.
Biological Sciences
People have forgotten that the library is for quiet study and it is getting louder without any enforcement.
Biological Sciences
It's a pleasurable working enviornment.
Biological Sciences
I like the library, it's a cool place. Thanks for all your hard work!
Biological Sciences
I think the library staff does their job well. I just wish that our state would allow our schools more money. I think that the library does well under the circumstances.
Biological Sciences
I know the library is needed for research materials, but you have a very bad fiction section. Even when there are fiction books, they are mixed in with books about fiction. And the ones you do have don't have the description on the cover because you don't leave the dust jackets on. It's very hard to decide what to read if I don't know what it's about. The fiction mixed in with others wouldn't be as bad if I could tell what I was going to read. And the isles are fairly narrow, but that is acceptable to be able to put in more books.
Biological Sciences
It would be nice to have more rooms available for group studies. Sometimes it is hard to find a spot w/out distraction for the individual as well. The staff is great, books are great, and computers are great. The saturday hours would be nice if they were longer.
Biological Sciences
I like the library alot, I just wish it had more Natural Resources/ Biological Sciences/ Wildlife online journals that I could access.
Biological Sciences
the library is great, but I would like to see and easier way to access online databases or know what databases we are free to use.
Biological Sciences
generally i think the library at Humboldt State is well run. the text resources have never disappointed me. however, i wish the online resources were more user friendly. for instance, the academic journal access, while available from my home, is more difficult to negotiate than it should be and all new science students should be given a detailed orientation to that system--if that service exists i never recieved it as a transfer student. also, since many programs i need access to, like Minitab, are only available in campus computer labs, and since the library is open hours other labs are not, i wish there was a larger computer lab setup--one that has paper/desk work space associated with the computer. finally, i think the front desk personel should be better trained in the library resources since they are often on-duty when the official librarians are not.
Biological Sciences
I like the library well enough, but I have trouble finding things sometimes (and finding people to help me find things) and the study areas aren't very appealing (Am I looking in the wrong spot? Maybe...). Personally, given the choice between going to the library or doing my own work at home on my computer... I'll take the latter. I'd LIKE to enjoy going to the library.
Biological Sciences
I would especially like to see better access to journals like Science, Nature, and others of similar nature. Too often I find articles on your web search engines that I would like to read but have no access to. Inter-library loans take too long.
Biological Sciences
I wonder about my privacy now that I have to log in. I also have not been told how much I'm allowed to print for the semester and fear I will reach the limit when it will be the least conveinent.
Biological Sciences
The main thing that could be improved is having more quiet study areas--or, just enforcing the quiet policy better. Also, the ILL program has been very slow in my experience as far as getting the requested articles in a timely fashion. For that reason, I usually do not use it anymore because I don't get the articles by the date I need them. The library staff is always very helpful and courteous and able to answer questions.
Biological Sciences
Library deserves more funding. The lack of new books, and the lapsing of subscriptions to scolarly journals is terrible.
Biological Sciences
There was one time I was unhappy with a library experience. I was trying to study and the employee was talking loudly with her friends and that was very distracting. But, other than that I come to the library many times and I usually get all that I need done and do not have any problems! Thanks!
Biological Sciences
Electronic access is the most important aspect of my library use. I apreciate journals that are accessible through online databases. If more of these could be added, it would facilitate my education.
Biological Sciences
You guys need to work on expanding the computer lab... it is ALWAYS crowded here at the library, the library is a poor place to come for those types of computer services i.e. Microsoft Office, Adobe, Non-library related use of the Internet etc. Also, the collection of peer reviewed journals isn't as complete as it looks on first glance, and since this is a science school, it would do well to have an excellent collection of journals for references. Other than that, I really like this libary. I like the food friendly areas, the numerous couches and low tables and I like the extra computers out in the open rooms for quick use (look up books, check email). Keep up the good work!
Biological Sciences
I wish there were more biological/ immunological/ cellular journals that the library subscribes to.
Biological Sciences
Very clean and comfortable.
Biological Sciences
I have found the library to be a great resource when I need to use it. I have not had the need for it as often as other because of my living so close to campus, I find though that is does provide a great amount of information and assistance for the most part in an easy to use manner.
Biological Sciences
i feel that it would be most helpfull if the library updates it films from VHS to DVDs. i find myself having to look else where for copies of videos i need for class.
Biological Sciences
Overall the library is very satisfactory. The quiet spaces and the groups spaces are excellent. I do wish that the library could be opened later on Friday and Saturday nights. Sometimes homeless people and children who run around are distracting.
Biological Sciences
The library is very useful in finding information in books and science journals. The employes are usally very helpful. But the electronics such as the computers, printers, and copiers could use better explinations on using them. Especially the programs on the computers such as excel could use some explination on how to use them.
Biological Sciences
often, the copier machines are broken or jammed for LONG periods of time...
Biological Sciences
The online journals take a long time to look at, they are hard to print because of how they are displayed, if an article is 30 pages long and you can only print one page at a time, it is time consuming! JSTOR particularly. Also I am not interested in a search that only can deliver me the absract. Not useful.
Biological Sciences
how long before all information is cross linked?
Biological Sciences
I think it's great that the library decided to put out a survey to rate performance. Great idea to keep up with the students' needs!
Biological Sciences
need new books
Biological Sciences
no questions about library policies?
Biological Sciences
DVDs have been in vogue for five or six years, and we still have very few in the library's media section, Figueridos has more documentaries than the HSU library.
Biological Sciences
More computers would be nice. Maybe some just for word processing so internet users don't take up all of them.
Biological Sciences
The library needs new books, I imagine this means the library needs more money. Other than that complaint, I am generally pleased with the library.
Biological Sciences
I would like to see maybe another computer lab in the library with two-sided paper printers. Also, copiers that will print on both sides.
Biological Sciences
The copy center should be more friendly and accessable and the copy machines should be in better working order (especially those that print two sided).
Biological Sciences
My biggest complaint is that the copier machines are almost always out of service (every machine on the 2nd floor, usually...)
Biological Sciences
Overall I've been satisfied w/ my library experience here.
Biological Sciences
Being a Biology Major, I often find myself in the library daily so i have experienced various experiences. Some people at the front desk can sometimes be rude but others are very polite and helpful. Overall again i feel that i get a great help from the HSU library so i would definately recommend this place for people to come and study.
Biological Sciences
we need more up to date books
Biological Sciences
I think the best thing the library could do to improve it's holdings would be to aquire online or paper versions of recent conference proceedings. Often when I go to look up a journal article that I can't find an inline version of, the shelves are being shifted and the journal I want is missing. This is very annoying. It would help if the online journals were somehow better organized. There are so many databases listed I usually end up searching five or so before I find one that locates anything related to my subject. There needs to be more info on what each database actually will find. It would also be helpful if the library aquired more information specific to california and it would be nice if the humboldt room was open more hours. Students should be able to take books out of the humboldt room. The library parking lot should be open for students too. The copy machines should take dollars and make double sided copies.
Biological Sciences
The search engines on the library's homepage are difficult to use and often provide little to no relevant results. I have had better search results using Yahoo!, Google, and other search engines for my research purposes.
Biological Sciences
The Libarary staff is good at helping people out. It is a bit hard to study when there are people talking loud, also when a lot of smelly people come in. I lose concentration. More places for quite study would be nice.
Biological Sciences
I don't know if there's much of a demand for it or if it's cost effective, but I would love to see more information on primatology, especially current books/journals/articles. It would also be nice if there was an easier way to search the movie collection by genre. Those two comments aside, this library is awesome!
Biological Sciences
The only real qualm I have about the library is the very long waiting period for interlibrary loans.
Biological Sciences
Having the white boards in the library helps a lot for tutoring students and working in groups. I believe there should be a few more of them to continue to facilitate this.
Business
It would be nice to have more copies of the required texts for courses available at the library.
Business
The Library is very helpful, most of the technical people have fabulous customer service skills. Often there is not enough information on specific topics related to Environmental Economics... Also the library is too cold to study in sometimes, & the computer lab is always crowded... People get noisy & sometimes it is hard to concentrate
Business
It would be convient and beneficial for students if there was a room with computers at tables set up for group work. I is hard to do computer work with groups in the computer labs and distracting for those trying to concentrate on their work. As a side comment about this survey, most of these questions were poorly written and vague. I am not sure what I was rateing for some of the question without enough context.
Business
The labs are always full, but overall very satisfied. Thank you for the great service.
Business
I enjoy being in and around the library and I think the staff is great, but I just don't think there is much for me there. I mostly use the the online resources, though at times ONCORES for my classes is just full of unnecessary and unorganized readings, though I generally believe this is an issue pertaining to the specific course and not the library.
Business
Isn't that funny, in a survey about the HSU library the word 'book' was not mentioned one time. I guess paper pages are no longer the focus of academics. I just love it when my professors tell me to 'google' something. This survey is too long with too many options. 34) My response to this statement is based on the library's inability to purchase new books. However, in item (35) I rate the library's overall quality of service very high because they do well despite budget constraints.
Business
I like the library yet I find that the Economics materials are relitively out of date. Thankfully I use interlibrary loan, yet that service is relitively slower and I cannot peruse the stacks which is one of my prefered forms of finding resource materials. I suppose I am spoiled because of my past use and familliarity with the UCSD libraries. I understand that humboldt is a runt within the CA higher education system, and that is one of the tradoffs I made in attending this university. Overall, this library fufills its mission as best as it can with its limited resources, and the staff is an asset.
Business
I think we have a great library and everyone there is very friendly, and always willing to help out.
Business
LIbrary has limited child friendly areas with appropiate computer access
Business
I wish there was another computer lab at the library. Often I come in and all the library computers are in use. I love that we can do double-sided printing in the library, it cuts down on paper waste especially when you need to read a 30-50 page article (i especially like putting more than on page per sheet and also double siding the printing) I haven't interacted much with the library staff other than to check out materials or have fliers put up on the bulletin boards in the library entry-way. The food friendly section is awesome and i love being able to eat my lunch/dinner or snack while i am completing my work. Question 41, regarding the discipline is a little limiting on this questionaire. I am choosing business as my response, but I am a Economics major, not a business major.
Business
Library employees are consistently the loudest and most disruptive individuals in the library; some of them actually yell at each other! The periodical staff is a particular problem, as is the reference staff. I already have enough trouble concentrating in the library; I don't need additional distractions from the staff, thanks.
Business
More internet access please for everyone
Business
I am always really pleased w/ your services. Great place to work on group projects especially
Business
you guys should help with searching for references, i found it kinda complicated. Keep up with the work!
Education
I think that the library does provide a wealth of resources. The children's section is in need of some invigoration and I am still not totally sold on its overall organization. Many of my friends have also discussed that the space is often so cold that you need to wear several layers. Art = awesome. Chairs are nice but would be even better if they were proportionate to the tables. Thanks for taking the time to do this survey.
Education
I wish a school id was required to enter the library to prevent homeless from making the library an inviting place to study.
Education
good resources inn the libary. good assess to the study room onthe 2nd and 3rd floor
Education
Having a cafe area in the Library would greatly draw me to study there more often. I usually study at coffee shops because the smell and taste of coffee helps me to study more efficiently. The caffeine helps too.
Education
Many of the resources I have used at the library seem out-dated. It would be nice to see current books in addition to the older ones. My major is Child Development, not Education. The disciplines were narrow on this survey!
Education
N/A
Education
I would like the library to hav longer hours, especially on school breaks.
Education
Overall people are friendly, and lots of my classes have required library tours.
Education
I feel the library serves its purpose, but there are definitely things that can be helped out. One thing is to have more right-winged books available for students so that both sides of a view are available not just the left-winged persepective.
Education
Library has few journals in relevance to Second Language Acquisition.
Education
I find that in the field of child development, in particular, the resources in print (discounting the journals) are really out of date. I realize that information in this field changes quickly and that with limited funds new materials are difficult to purchase. However, I find that many of the book are out of date enough that my instructors do not want me to use them.
Education
The library needs more current resources in ALL areas. I was disgusted to discover that there are children's books which relate AIDS to homosexuality. Our library reflects the professionality of the university. To have books like this on the shelves is completely unaccaptible!
Education
The staff has always been very helpful, and shown me how to find what I need.
Education
I love the library, I spend time here everyday. The one thing that I have trouble with sometimes is searching the catalog when I'm looking for a book or film. I often get the wrong results or have a hard time finding what I need
Education
i enjoy visiting the library! just needs a face life and more magazines.
Education
Jeffery Hernandez in the Interlibrary loan office is especially helpful. He makes sure i gett he books that I needd from other libraries.
Education
I think the library needs a few more Hotspots for wireless connectivity because there are many dead zones especially upstairs.
Education
I feel that the library can be made more inviting with more interesting artwork or designing. Some areas of the library get to be bland. The lower level is great with the artwork and the case that is across from the canoe that changes often.
Education
The services the library provides are useful, however when I need to ask a question, library workers seem to be scarce.
Education
Thank you! The children's section of teaching material is outdated. Our professors were requesting current teaching materials for our assignments. After being away from HSU after I graduated years ago and coming back for a credential, I liked that food and drinks were allowed and there were more places to study on one's own or with groups. I also saw that you have added CD's and video's, which was nice to see. Keep up the good work! :)
Education
#7-some of the staff is awesome at the main desk, while others act as though I should know everything and are a little snotty when I don't know how something works. Why should I be an expert at THEIR job? #17-most of the computers used to search the library catalog have really bad keyboards that stick and some of the computers are so old they take FOREVER to search anything. #17 there are many old books in my field not that many newer, especially in the children's lit section, not a good selection of diversity (people of color) in childrens books.
Education
I feel like the services are fine but the building needs work and there needs to be a better atmosphere. I do not like being there because it's not a comfortable, inviting place to go.
Education
i want an ipod sooo bad!!!
Education
the question that sparked an idea was the one asking if the library is an inviting envoronment. I know that when i go to the library, i will get at least a little bit of work done, but there isnt really anything to get the average student to go. Maybe some incentive to go to the library would make students more successful. im not a coffee drinker myself, but maybe free coffee on some nights would bring in some students, or free cookies. Also, there cant be much done about some things like the available space for students. it is sometimes hard to find a nice quiet area.
Education
I would like to have more contact with people helping me, library assistant.
Education
I have found the library to be a great venue to study and do research in.
Education
i always come out satisfied with our library
Education
I wish there were group study rooms, i've used conference rooms but it would be easier if there were a few rooms set aside for group use the lobby can get pretty loud because that is where groups gather now
Education
i would like more textbooks available on loan and for a longer period of time.
Education
Please make more computers available for internet connections. Right now there are only about ten computers on the "floor" that is connected and about twenty that are not connected. Many more users for the net connected computers than the limited access ones. Not good use of resources. The library should consider the needs of community users (non HSU affiliated) too. They are a part of the library clients and having more computers open to them should be good PR and builds goodwill for HSU.
Education
I would like to see more individual study carrels in the library, and more soothing, relaxing colors. The space does not strike me as a great place to study or get work done.
Education
Being an older studentl, I am totally pleased with all the help that the library and its staff have done to make my 2+ years here a great experience
Education
Overall I am very please with the Library service and feel very comportable when I am here. Which is very often. I am here before classes, in between class and after classes, always useing the study area as well as the computers and to gather any information that I need.
Education
The ;ibrary is a great place for me to get my mind on studying, and allows me to study in a safe environment.
Education
Generally I find what I need and the staff is nice. However, when you find that perfect article abstract, the library doesn't have it. I can't blame the staff, however, because it is just Murphey's Law!
Engineering / Computer Science
In general, the library does a good job - the staff has always been helpful and friendly. I have only on rare occasions attempted to access journals and such and had an extremely difficult time finding information pertaining to the topic I was seeking. I am not the kind of person that likes to ask for help - so instead, I will seek information elsewhere. Also, the format of this questionare is akward and kinda difficult to answer fairly from question to question.
Engineering / Computer Science
Places for quiet reading are often spoiled by people who talk in the non talking areas, especially near finals time. I have a very hard time reading when I am distracted especially by talking. I am very dissatisfied by the access to quiet reading spaces.
Engineering / Computer Science
The interior and materials could use revamping. I am unaware of any off-site access.
Engineering / Computer Science
Electronic resources should be easy to view. Viewing one page at a time is not easy.
Engineering / Computer Science
The library is an essential resource for students and faculty. I am very pleased with the HSU library, the only thing lacking is printed material, there could always be more! The diversity and quantity of technological reference material is low, but it's tough to keep up with the field. The only thing I really want is a way to browse the vinyl record collection!!!! I've been eyeing those for a long time. I would be very interested in digitally archiving some or all of the record collection for easier access. This may provide a more diverse collection of music for the students, and recording from vinyl to CD requires very little equipment, just time. I have done this with my personal record collection and had great success.
Engineering / Computer Science
More wireless access points are needed. I would very much like to access the internet from the quiet study areas along the edges of the third floor.
Engineering / Computer Science
I generally haven't used the library for more than a wi-fi hotspot. When I have worked with the staff, they have been more than helpful.
Engineering / Computer Science
overall great library performance
Engineering / Computer Science
there neede to be more group study rooms
Engineering / Computer Science
I worked in the top floor of the library for over a year and a half, and never have I encountered such friendly people; who day in and out only seek to help make other's lives easier.
Engineering / Computer Science
We need more up to date information on engineering and science in general. Things have changed a lot since the 70s. Also, getting journal articles are difficult. Mostly abstracts, when I desparately need an article. It seems like the more recent technology, information, etc, is through journals and the like. Focus on that, and not so much books. I NEED REFERENCES!
Engineering / Computer Science
Need more up-to-date printed materials. One of the best state libraries I have seen. PLEASE keep it up. Our library needs a substantial budget. Ideem my money to the schol worth it.
Engineering / Computer Science
it's not easy for Richard Wright to instill the confidence needed in his employees to keep the library a happy one that will be able to shelter alotta stressed out and financially frustrated college students. I greatly appreciate the good hard work you guys put out! =)
Engineering / Computer Science
I don't really know why I got the email telling me to take this survey. I view the on campus library as a complete waste of valuable resources. This university seems to be good at that. The only time that I have used the library is when I have been forced to by a non-major related, waste of time, touchy-feely class in which the instructor was not internet savvy. Thank goodness, this situation doesn't come up often.
Engineering / Computer Science
The library needs more internet ready computers in the labs
Engineering / Computer Science
The library website is poorly designed. It looks like it was done by an amateur. It's hard to find anything. It's CSS does not validate. http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/validator?profile=css2&warning=2&uri=http%3A%2F%2Flibrary.humboldt.edu
Engineering / Computer Science
When I go into the library, all I want to do is find what I need without being bothered, or find a quiet space to do some work while on campus, again, without being bothered. The campus library fulfills that as much as can be practical.
Engineering / Computer Science
Wireless is awsome
Engineering / Computer Science
Those Help Desk employees are always so helpful!
Engineering / Computer Science
this may be unadjustable due to size resrictions, but the shelves are really close together, i'm a fairly skinny guy and have some difficulty finding books that are placed on a low shelf. better ventilation in the computer room
Engineering / Computer Science
There are a few employees at the library that need to renew their commitment to customer service. Most employees are very considerate and willing to assist me with whatever I need to further my education. However, I can specifically think of two people I have encountered over the years who need to leave their problems at the door, and focus on HSU's academic mission and customer service aspects of his/her position.
Engineering / Computer Science
Help is available when needed. Staff answers questions promptly or finds someone who can. Some monitors are fuzzy and strain eyes. 2nd floor can get a little stuffy/smelly near the entrance wall. Most quiet area is the childrens area, also has nice view which inspires study and is relaxing. Fist time I've seen periodicals on other than the first floor. Outlets for laptops near seating? Desks are available with ports for power built in (with safety cover). I'm suprised by the short hours on friday nights, but that is a usage issue.
Engineering / Computer Science
would be nice for one more white board in the fishbowl, and more lights up stairs
Engineering / Computer Science
A) The library environment is very important to studying. Having chairs that lack any padding (it's been smashed in over the years), tables that wobble, no power plugs in sight, and poor wifi coverage have turned me off to the library. I used to go there a lot, but it's just not worth it anymore. I have to do all my work on a laptop (software not found in the labs) and the lack of power plugs near chairs makes it nearly impossible at times. B) I get really depressed when I try to find technology books in the library. One new book for 2005. Pretty sad. I tried to donate brand new books once that matched the CIS / CS courses being offered and was told the books would go to the book sale. Learn to accept donations better. I'm not saying you should be putting Windows 95 for dummies books on the shelf, but when students donate current revision technology books that are best sellers on Amazon don't turn them away. C) When you fill out an interlibrary loan and you say "I don't want it until this date" that means you don't want it until that date. When it shows up a month before that date it's kind of worthless. Also when you say you want a book and it hasn't shown up 6 months later..well that kind of sucks. D) If you're going to buy books on technology as the department what students / faculty want. The Windows XP Pro Resource Guide is not what people want in our department (this was the new book purcahsed for this year). PHP, Python, Linux, Mac OS X, and Perl. These are things students / faculty are excited about and many of these subjects just don't exist in the library or are terribly outdated. Technology moves fast. Our department is moving towards Unix / Linux and Open Source and the library still reflects and era where students / faculty were interested in DOS / Windows and closed source commercial technologies. As it stands to do work for a class I need to get books from other CSUs or UCs. This shouldn't be the case.
Engineering / Computer Science
All my professors encourage group study; therefore more areas for group study sessions would benefit many students.
Engineering / Computer Science
we need a budget for purchasing new library books. Thank you
Engineering / Computer Science
Please continue to do a good job.
Engineering / Computer Science
Overall good.
Natural Resources
so so
Natural Resources
good service from ALL staff regardless of position. Comfy couches love the atmosphere on all floors. more books on tape and books on CD would be nice to add to the racks and maybe more scientific journals accessible from the internet.
Natural Resources
I would like to see a greater collection of new works of literature and up- and-coming authors. Also, maybe a better selection of movies.
Natural Resources
the library website is a really great tool.
Natural Resources
I would like to have more electronic journals available especially in Geology.
Natural Resources
I find that the library provides a good study and relaxation environment.
Natural Resources
The staff is very helpful. The research website gets really confusing, and for me, requires assitance for me to find what I am looking for everytime
Natural Resources
hate the overbearing hum of electronics specifically the buzz of the magnetic security system on entering and exiting, makes me dread going. Wish the online resources were availible from my home internet and did not require going to the library or on Campus to access eg use student ID to access library sites via a cookie or what haveyou that disables access to library databases.
Natural Resources
Thank you for all that you are doing. most of the downfalls of the library I know are a direct result of the budget cuts.
Natural Resources
no new gateways-MORE $$ for NEW BOOKS! ;)
Natural Resources
I would like to see workshops provided weekly.
Natural Resources
Employees are very helpful. I would appreciate better computers in the library on the 2nd floor for finding journal articles as the 2 computers there are in poor condition and quite old and slow. My other recommendation is getting access to a greater number of journals at the electronic level. I appreciate articles electronically (.pdf format) much more than a paper copy which requires a photocopy. Maybe get a computer with scanner and Adobe software that can scan directly to a .pdf instead of using a photocopy machine. Then users can print out the article if necessary or just keep it electronically as needed.
Natural Resources
You guys need more books
Natural Resources
Everyone that I have had to deal with in the library whether it is the front counter staff or the people that work 'behind' the counter are very friendly and helpfull. The only problem I have has nothing to do with the services or staff but has to do with being able to study in a quiet place. I don't like the way the cubicals are set up next to the round tables (3rd floor) because the people who sit at the tables are noisy and it is usually more than one person so the areas that are designated as 'quiet', are not.
Natural Resources
The computers that are on the floor, not in the lab, are very slow. It would be nice if there were more computers available on the third floor for independent use and printing.
Natural Resources
Sometimes its hard to find books b/c they take too much time to reshelve them.
Natural Resources
There are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful members of the library staff. Unfortunately, those people are hardly ever there when I am finally able to get to the library to do my research. At night, the front desk staff are the only people I can find to ask questions of, and with few exceptions they seem to be of little help and little concern. Getting more knowledgeable and helpful staff at all hours is more important to me than getting more printed materials into our library. Also more hours would help! I had a ton of research to do over Spring Break, but the few hours the library had open happen always to be my working hours.
Natural Resources
stinky patrons = stinky library
Natural Resources
why is there funding for new buildings on campus when are shelves for new books are empty?? i think the library hours are too few on the weekends when we (students) actually have time to study.
Natural Resources
1. The lighting in the library is too dim. 2. Providing access to more full-text journal articles online would be immensely helpful and appreciated.
Natural Resources
overall, I am satisfied with the library ;-)
Natural Resources
I wish the libary had more up to date books and information
Natural Resources
The couches and decor of the library are somewhat drab and dark. Also, the printer defaults in the computer labs should be set to double-sided!
Natural Resources
you guys are doing a great job, considering budget constraints. thank you!
Natural Resources
I am extremely dissapointed in the number of printed and online materials available through our library, the lack of these materials makes doing any kind of research work almost impossible. I have spoken to people at the library about this and no one has gotten back to me about working on a solution, it seems that they feel just as frustrated by this as I do. I feel as though the money that I am borrowing to attend this school is being shuttled into useless pursuits, instead of minding domestic policy (wow, sounds like our school is being run as efficiently as our country is). This is, sadly, why I am transferring out of this school next semester to a school that advocates learning about your major at school, not learning how to do without.
Natural Resources
The services are great but some of the equiptment is old and getting older. The age of google has arrived and keeping people hooked on books seems to be getting harder. Keep up the good work!
Natural Resources
the food friendly area is great, it makes the library much more user friendly. The fish bowl on the second floor is also nice for group studying
Natural Resources
It would be nice to have the library open later on Friday an Saterday. Maybe untel 10:00 or 11:00 pm. thank you
Natural Resources
Library could use some upgrading of bathrooms! The library looks ancient and could use some serious remodeling.
Natural Resources
I think considering the amount of funds allocated for the library it is a satisfactory resource but I would like to see some more effort in getting up to date resources and some moree support.
Natural Resources
Need access to more older periodicals.
Natural Resources
The library does not have the journals i need for my field. My major is Forestry Wildland Fire Mgnt. But there are no journals on wildland fire in the library and only a small number online.
Natural Resources
cell phones should not be allowed in the library they are very distracting.
Natural Resources
The ease of use of electronic resources needs improvement. It's very confusing and nonintuitive. It is not as easy as collecting a bunch of books off the shelves.

Natural Resources
The service is great, and so is the selection of older books. There are some real classics and hard to find books in the library. However, I am noticing a lack of more recent literature and texts and find this to be rather hampering to my research efforts, especially when I am to quote references published within the last 5 years or so. HSU has a good library selection so please do not let this fact fade away as less and less newer information is added. I love the library and the service too, but I would actually rather have more recent books than better service!
Natural Resources
It would be really nice if the hours were increased, rather than being cut. It's also really cold in there a lot of the time, making it harder to study. (Especially the fishbowl.) Is the AC on? and, fyi, This survey was kind of confusing.
Natural Resources
Though I do not visit the library very often, I have had good experiences when I have been there. The employees have always been very helpful and knowledgeable.
Natural Resources
The library is great, I do not study there as much as I would like because it is hard for me to concentrate with a lot of back ground noise. If there were a section designated for reading, and another section for study groups, I think the library would be a better resource for me altogether.
Natural Resources
I often acess the library in the evenings and at night and the only people there to help me are thecheck out personel. If you could put someone at night at least once in a while to help aid in research questions it would be appreciated.
Natural Resources
Employees talk too loud and it disturbs me while I study, especially on the second floor. The voices carrying out of the work areas are inappropriate.
Natural Resources
In some of my classes, a library representative has come in and taught us research methods and resource locations. This has been a huge help to me in my five years of study at HSU.
Natural Resources
This library is great, with helpful librarians and great sources!
Natural Resources
Robert Sathrum is very very helpful!!
Natural Resources
Some of the staff are really helpful and friendly, others are really not. Interesting range.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
GEnerally the librarians are great! They really take the time to explain how things are set up and where to locate things that I need for research and such. There are a few things I'd like to see improved such as more individual quiet spaces, small rooms for study and more places that are beverage friendly. Thank you.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
There's only a few things I can say could be improved... Getting rid of the homeless sleeping people on the couches, and making sure that people are being quiet on the 2nd and 3rd floors.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
librabry servise seems good. However there is an obvious shortage of new books. Also there are many textbooks that are not availiable in the reserve section of the library
Nursing and Sport Sciences
Computers need to be updated and more user friendly. Prefer CR's computer resources
Nursing and Sport Sciences
I love the libary!
Nursing and Sport Sciences
I find that it is often difficult to find a quiet place to study in the library, even on the third floor. The use of cell phones in the library has reached an intollerable level, the library (and computer labs for that matter) should be no phone zones.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
the library is fine. It looks exactly the same as it did 25 years ago. It is kinda drab amd supplies are always gone. maybe you should have to check out the stapler?
Nursing and Sport Sciences
I love the building and the enviorment, and especially how quiet it is.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
Not enought computers even with the other areas on campus. Not organized very well with the periodicals
Nursing and Sport Sciences
It is sometimes very difficult to impossible to access and/or print research articles for submission with papers. I refuse to pay $15-$30 for a copy that I will only use once, when I supposedly have access as a HSU student.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
i like how they have so many cds to check out
Nursing and Sport Sciences
I find it difficult to access online recources that i know we have subscriptions to. i tend to just use google scholar and get what i need that way. i would really like to see a study room with computers with internet access or word and tables so that i can spread material out to write a paper and use the computer at the same time. it is nice that we have wireless access for laptops, but somtimes it is difficult to find a place to plug in at a roomy table.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
for an athletic trainer the amount of journals and sources in the library are limited. i have never done inter library loan but i have heard good things. but for a procastinator like myself it doesn't work for me. the quality of help there is outstanding when i need it and think that it works for this university.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
Generally very satisfied with the library. I am able to work entirely independantly which I appreciate (but it means I do not have much contact with employees and needing assistance/answers). The only thing that really disapoints me about the library is the lack of NEW material. The bright flourescent lights make it hard to study there for long periods of time (I've heard AT LEAST four other students with the same complaint). The lights give some people headaches (myself included).
Nursing and Sport Sciences
The personel have always been very helpful and knowledgable. Access to online journals is sometimes limited, but I am grateful for the diverse research available to me, especially on my home computer through library access.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
It seems that more money for more staff and up to date books would be helpful. I've had both bad and good experiences with having staff help me with a research problem.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
I wish it a had a better selection of books in herbalism and novels
Nursing and Sport Sciences
I feel that many of the ills of the HSU library are not neccessarly due to the staff and instution but due to finacial resons and cut backs. I wish that the money was there to do more, it is weird because I feel that my county libary and community libary is better than HSU's due to money. I wish people found it important to improve the condition of our facitlity and to take pride in it for it is a larger resoucrce than most understand.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
Great Service. It is very disruptive when people eat, listen to music too loudly, or sing to themselves in the "quiet" area upstairs. It would be nice if someone walked through the "quiet" areas to inforce being quiet. I love that I can access the databases from home!
Nursing and Sport Sciences
Our library needs more funding for new texts, machines, etc. I've noticed that there have been barely any new texts on the shelves, and computer lab space in the library is a feeding frenzy. Otherwise, the staff is great, and the library has suited my particular needs.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
My biggest problem with this library is finding a quiet place to study. even in the designated "quiet study" areas, people are inconsiderate (talking on cell phones, etc) and the library staff are not supportive in enforcing this. It is even harder to find a quiet space to write a paper on a computer. I realize people want to do group projects in the labs, but I think the library would be the most appropriate place to designate a "quiet study" computer lab. Many students who don't have computers at home and who have trouble focusing on papers while others are talking would be greatly appreciative! I frequently need professional journal articles for my nursing research. When I search through the library site, I often find really good articles- the problem is they are almost never available. I end up having to change my topic to accomodate the articles that are available. You are especially lacking in journals of a holistic health nature.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
It would be wonderful if we could make another computer lab in the library, and have additional equipment, such as scanners. I also really dislike the fact that we must loggin, I feel that is a violation of my human rights.
Nursing and Sport Sciences
I think the library does a very good job, but this survey was a little redundant and confusing.
Physical Sciences and Math
always helpful
Physical Sciences and Math
library hours must be increased, there should be some computer, resourse and areas to study very late into the night and weekend and holidays. also, help access for more hours of the day and weekends
Physical Sciences and Math
The library staff are very informative and helpful when finding resources.
Physical Sciences and Math
Open before 11:00 am on the weekends. 9:00 am would be nice.
Physical Sciences and Math
I mostly use the library for independent and group study. I don't feel confident in my knowledge about searching for electronic soures in the library.
Physical Sciences and Math
Slow reshelving! Poor organization on shelves, unknowledgeable student staff! Lack of resources! Good: Sharon Chadwick, and the hold services, online renewal. We need more resources....but alas we are broke! I use the services daily regarding my academic work, in short our library is the best in humboldt co. but honestly is the worst out of all the CSU system, let alone the UC system......would think that if all these state resources are available then regardless of where you pay tuition, a student should have the ability to use them. We should share online resources with other UC and CSUs wilthout slow ILL.
Physical Sciences and Math
Good Job!
Physical Sciences and Math
It is dishearting to see the "new books" shelf constantly empty because of budget cuts when our administrators are getting pay raises.
Physical Sciences and Math
I feel the library staff is very open and inviting for questions. They are as helpful as they can be. The main problem i have is with the resources available. There are many journals not available for Chemistry, and some librarians don't know how to use some of the more involved data bases. The librarian who specializes in science research is very helpful, but she is not available all the time. It would be nice to get some help when it comes to Chemical abstract.
Physical Sciences and Math
not enough new books
Physical Sciences and Math
i am very pleased with the librarys service. i can always seem to get my work done when i go in there
Physical Sciences and Math
Additional funding should be allocated to the HSU Library so that new materials can be purchased, and subscriptions to research databases can be expanded.
Physical Sciences and Math
I would love to use the library more often but it's dirty. I did use the library a lot more until I recognized that it seems almost unsafe since so many people eat at and spread thier germs all over the library, so I avoid it now.
Physical Sciences and Math
The computer lab is too small and too often in use for classes. The general din of conversation is excessive throughout the library on all floors. Library staff is rather elusive, and more often than not need to be hunted down. Group study areas are too small and the temperature is always too cold for comfort.
Physical Sciences and Math
I would like the checkout dates to be one week longer. I don't like the way the cd's are organized. I love my library!
Physical Sciences and Math
It would be much more convenient to be able to check out DVDs and videos for longer than one day.
Physical Sciences and Math
I think that being able to access journals and research papers through the library website from my home computer is great. I like about 45 minutes away from HSU and that accessibilty has helped tremendously.
Physical Sciences and Math
I mostly use the library for studying (alone and in groups) and for a comfortable place to do homework between classes. The times I used the library for information I found what I needed quickly, there were lots of sources, and the process was very pleasant.
Physical Sciences and Math
My only complaint is that it isn't always easy to find all the online resources available through the library (OWLs, etc) Mabye tweak the library website a little more? I like the new look this year.
Physical Sciences and Math
The interlibrary loan is amazing, especially when it is delivered electronically. Access to current journals in my field is extremely limited and puts me at a disadvantage when it comes time to compile references for research.
Physical Sciences and Math
1.Very confusing to find information of material that exists in the library itself. 2.Requesting books on hold takes a few days. 3.Limited supply of maps, esp since I am a geologist where maps are a key essential in our field. 4.Helpful people at the circulation desk.
Physical Sciences and Math
Employees range from helpful to disrespectful. The library has superior performance when compared with the AIR Center, but that is not saying much
Physical Sciences and Math
on the computer stations in the library, they should provide a poster or some kind of information to help people surf the library's website for reasearch purposes. Sometime the ref desk people are busy and you dont expect someone to wait a while when the research won't take that long.
Physical Sciences and Math
Upgraded computers throughout the shelf areas (the ones used for searching for books) would be nice.
Physical Sciences and Math
The staff is great, the computer labs are useful, and there are many wonderful things about our library. I am very glad we have such a large library on campus. My main criticism is the following: * It is often hard to find books that are new of have the latest information. Many times I have found the newest book on a topic is 10 years old. There is great selection, I just wish our campus put a bit more of its budget to newer materials. One last note is that it is a bit distracting and bothersome when there are people sleeping on the couches in the library, or talking on their cell phones (this is especially problematic in computer labs). Thank you for all you do! :
Physical Sciences and Math
Our library is great. I wish there were outreach programs that taught students how to use it. I would also like to have library all nighters, where students could access the library all night during intense studying times.
Physical Sciences and Math
the food friendly section rocks! a microwave in there would be really nice, though....
Physical Sciences and Math
One major distraction and source of frustration was the large number of "community members" (non-students) using many of the computer resources in the library at the students expense. There were many times when I was unable to use the computers (particularly on the third floor) due to overcrowding by some of Arcata's "finest." The new password system seemed to indirectly (?) help this problem.
Physical Sciences and Math
Need to stay reacent on current printed scicence resouces.
Physical Sciences and Math
The library would be best improved by giving me the ipod.
Physical Sciences and Math
Positive experiences overall.
Social Sciences / Psychology
It would be nice if there were a computer lab on campus that was reserved just for independent use all of the time...because a lot of times they are taken up for the use of classes.
Social Sciences / Psychology
All in all, I am very satisified with the library services at HSU. I wish there were more journals on hand in the library or SFX dealing with my area of study-gerontology/geriatrics.
Social Sciences / Psychology
tech wise it is hard to get a hold of people to help you because sometimes they have no idea what is wrong with the computer. I like how quickly we recieve interlibrary loans
Social Sciences / Psychology
There is a girl who works at the checkout counter who speaks so loudly I have to go somewhere else to do reading between my classes that I could normally do in the lobby. Usually this is no big deal but she is so loud and aggrivating I wish someone would tell her that to work in a library one must speak quitely. I also wish the library got new books. I'd rather have new books than any new building on campus.
Social Sciences / Psychology
This survey seems a little redundant, but it is good to know that the administration cares about our library experience. All of the students who work here are very polite and helpful!
Social Sciences / Psychology
Sile, the reference librarian, is awesome!!!
Social Sciences / Psychology
I think the library could do so much more if it had increased funding. For the most part I have enjoyed my library experiences.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Overall the staff has always been courteous and well informed. My objections are that we need more budget to make available new books. It appears that we need more workstations, since the lines can take 15 min to get through, often. As a student the library has been a tremendous asset both as a place and the material available including the comp. labs.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Well if you could eliminate the garlic and talking it would be perfect.
Social Sciences / Psychology
always friendly and helpful
Social Sciences / Psychology
it is good....hours could be looked at i think.
Social Sciences / Psychology
More new books are needed! We can't be a university without new books being ordered every year so we can keep up with the latest research!
Social Sciences / Psychology
Your reference librarians are exceptional: friendly, courteous and knowledgeable. However, I was told that your (blue, 2 full page) handout on accessing periodicals and abstracts was outdated given the updated computer technology-please remove it from your shelves on the third floor or update it. Thank you.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Overall, they are pretty good, at least the student part of it. The students at the fron desk are very helpful and friendly. The other resource I have used is the Front Desk, or the computer help office next to the lab. They have helped me with every issue I have had. Other than that, I think the services are decent.
Social Sciences / Psychology
it would be of great help to have more individual private spaces without the constant distractions of people coming and going. it gets very annoying that the younger males on campus use the library to poorly attempt picking up girls in the common areas and computer labs. a stricter policy on cell phones would also be appreciated, too many times these spoiled brats will have no sense to not prattle on their phone in the study areas. it would also be nice if the chairs and couches were cleaned on a more regular basis.
Social Sciences / Psychology
more plants would be nice throughout the library
Social Sciences / Psychology
There should be more places to smoke near the library because people end up smoking near the entrances and bothering other people.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I am constantly impressed by the services the library provides both through its employees and also through its immense online resources. The Humboldt State University Library continually enables students to creativly expore academic endeavours throught the development and understanding of information.
Social Sciences / Psychology
More books.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I usually don't complain about customer service but the other day I was trying to retrieve something from the reserve desk and was helped by the rudest and most condescending young lady that I think I've ever met. It seems to me that anyone working at a help desk should be ready and willing to help.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Overall, the library staff does an excellent job in attending to student's needs. I guess I just don't know how to use the library to its full potential, and get frustrated when I can find something I need.
Social Sciences / Psychology
It is almost impossible to copy material in the library. Either the change machine does not work or the copy machine is broken. Change should be available at the front desk and at least one copy machine should be working at all times.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I am extremely satisfied with the Inter Library Loan (ILL) department. Everything I have requested has been approved and delivered to me well before the delivery date. And many times I can request to hold the book for an extended period of time very helpful. Lastly, I must say that I would be lost without such databases as LexisNexis and Academic Search Elite. They are, by far, my biggest academic aid.
Social Sciences / Psychology
The staff is open to helping when asked questions. They are friendly and try their best to getting questions resolved.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Remind EMPLOYEES to be quiet downstairs at the circulation desk because people are trying to study on the comfortable couches.
Social Sciences / Psychology
ILL and PSYCInfo could be integrated better.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Generally i'd like to see more diversity in books in my field of study. For instance, i cannot find one Bill O'Reilly book, yet Al Franklin is front and center
Social Sciences / Psychology
The ONCORES section helps out alot when finding articles, great selection of books and resources.
Social Sciences / Psychology
You guys are great. I love the HSU library; the staff is for the most part very helpful.
Social Sciences / Psychology
You guys are all great, plus you have a lot of food references CD's and DVD's, keep up the good work
Social Sciences / Psychology
two suggestions: #1 We should be able to check out vhs/dvds for longer than a day. Late fees of $3 per day are outrageous and hard to pay. #2 The library gets cold in at night which makes it uncomfortable to study at for long periods of time. Room temperature would be greatly appreciated, especially in the upper quieter floors (2nd and 3rd).
Social Sciences / Psychology
My main gripe is the amount of books that are available. It's sad to see how the budget cuts have really diminished the potential of this library.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I like that the library is open late at night and early in the morning on weekdays. I would like it if weekend hours could be extended later into the evening. I often find it difficult to navigate through the online articles and databases. It sometimes takes me a long time to find an article or information I need. I think it would be beneficial if this were in a more user friendly format.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I find that the library is not a desirable place to get work done. I feel that the coloring is just not calming and a bit agitating. I also think that it's rather cold in the Library more heat would be greatly desired especially on those days that are pretty cold/rainy.
Social Sciences / Psychology
The library has been a helpfull tool for all of my classes
Social Sciences / Psychology
we need more books and more online journals....interlibrary loan is not cool!
Social Sciences / Psychology
It's not the librarians....they are great...and obviously well-educated. However, the student workers are so incredibly rude, that it makes me not want to go there.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I feel cold in the library all the time. When I need to study, it should be warmer I am tired of bring a jacket to feel comfortable. I hear this complaint from alot of friends as well. Also I am tiered of the homeless eatting in non eating areas and sleeping it is not a Social Sciences / Psychology
There is a need for more updated books and resources.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I often find myself turning to online databases and journals because the HSU library rarely has up to date information on geographic related subjects. Even the librarians often tell me to look at online sources. This makes it hard to write papers that require hard sources. I also find that the library does not have a new enough selection of travel and culture books.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I think that more accessible librarians on each floor would be helpful. I wandered around a long time yesterday looking for a book that was not on the shelf, and so having an area where most of the unshelved books are placed(which students could look through) would help. Also, I gave up trying to use the michrofiche machines because there was no one around to explain it. I am not technically savvy, and I don't want to break anything. I didn't even see a sign explaining it, but you can't ask a sign any questions.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I think they are overall good. I would like some comfy reading chairs situated in quite nooks away from noisy/busy areas. If there are any I haven't found them.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Keep it nice and warm when it's cold and wet outside. Enlarge the computer lab.
Social Sciences / Psychology
MUST HAVE RELIABLE COPY MACHINES - I beg of you - PLEASE!!! Or longer copy center hours or something - this has been the most frustrating thing in the world. I've had to come back several times to get a simple article copied. Pleeeeaaaaasssse get working copy machines / fix ones you have. (And stock or check on them frequently.) PLEASE!!! I'd almost be willing to take turns standing guard to ensure people use them nicely for you. Nice selection of video materials. Library staff are very nice people - especially up in the Humboldt Room.
Social Sciences / Psychology
It would be beneficial for those that have learning challenges to create a couple of closed door study rooms for the sake of lessening distraction/disruption by other library patrons.
Social Sciences / Psychology
It is always very clean and I like that you have a place where people can eat in the library for when finals come around I can eat and not have to leave and come back. It is great!!!!
Social Sciences / Psychology
The liabrary needs to feel more comfortable with large plants and trees, more comfortable seating, more light etc. It just doesnot feel like a comfortable environment to study in.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I LOVE THE LIBRARY
Social Sciences / Psychology
It would be extremly helpful if more full text journal articles were available through electronic resources.
Social Sciences / Psychology
keep up the great work!!
Social Sciences / Psychology
It would be nice if there were more places for individual quite study.
Social Sciences / Psychology
I have a child and have had to bring her to several study groups in the fish bowl. It would be nice to have a room where I would feel comfortable bringing my two year old and not feel like I am imposing on others quiet time. I understand that this is not usually found or should be expected in a library but it would be nice. Also, access to a greater number of articles online is always nice. Overall, I am pleased.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Gret facility - tries hard with lack of budget given to it - great online tools and technology, but could find a way to aquaint freshmen with their services better for maximum use and access to facilities.
Social Sciences / Psychology
useful, but not many people working on third floor whenever i am there, and on first floor, they seem to be rude sometimes
Social Sciences / Psychology
The library is a very unfriendly, unwelcoming place to study. It is not comfortable at all and the employees for the most part are extremely unhelpful, especially in the computer office.
Social Sciences / Psychology
More electronic-full text journals would be a helpful use of resources Longer Hours would aalso be helpfulespecially for those students wou do not have access to computers, in addition to more terminals. I realize that this costs a lot of capital input, but if there is to be more ways to attract students, there must be ways to attract, them and keep the ones currently here.
Social Sciences / Psychology
The computers always seem dirty. It would be nice if they could be cleaned more often.
Social Sciences / Psychology
Everone has been very helpful at the library, except this one lady at the help desk. She was very rude to me. I feel weird every time I see her now.
Undecided
I love the squishy chairs!!! (even though they are a hideous color)

I love the library, but I wish the QUIET policy in the third and second floor was enforced more because I hear people talking on cell phones a lot and it is disturbing.

In conclusion, the library is a very egnimatic helpful resource to the furthering of my education, as well as an accomplished facet to HSU and its students.
