Freshman (Year 1), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
I wish the library hours would be extended on friday and saturday evenings.
Freshman (Year 1), Communications / Journalism, Access to Information
there arent enough books that i can flip through to decide which ones i want to take home
Freshman (Year 1), Education, Library as Place
Open later at night maybe you can get more art on the walls around the library, some areas are too plain More computers with MCWord or for typing purposes, because there has been times were I wait in line for a PC to be available for more then 45min. It would be nice if we could get some beenbags, or different kind of things to sit on, like something more home or more relaxed then couches or chairs. Thank you.
Freshman (Year 1), Education, Library as Place
The HSU Library s a welcoming place to research and study. I am satisfied with it.
Freshman (Year 1), Engineering / Computer Science, Personnal Control
I was very happy with our library. Thank you

Freshman (Year 1), Engineering / Computer Science, Other
Instead of asking, "what is the minimum service I require" ask something more simple, this made this assessment unclear.
Freshman (Year 1), Health Sciences, Library as Place
My main wishes for the improvements are more personable and patient people, as well as more atmosphere-friendly study areas, ie cleaner air, sunlight, comforatable and practical chairs to study in. Thanks for asking. :)
Freshman (Year 1), Health Sciences, Library as Place
The noise made by construction really sucks. I know you cant help this but it has made time studying at the library difficult. It seems there really isnt anywhere to go with out finding construction noise during the day.
Freshman (Year 1), Health Sciences, Access to Information
It is inconvenient that it closes so early on Saturdays.
Freshman (Year 1), Health Sciences, Library as Place
i would love to see behind plant lighting and/or just more lighting along the paths to the library.
Freshman (Year 1), Humanities, Library as Place
I really like the study rooms and would be happy if there were more available.
Freshman (Year 1), Law, Library as Place
The staff of the library are very good and helpful but the atomsphere, ie the browns and really depressive and oppressive color become something that many people not aware of course avoide the libray because of this fact, perhaps new color scheme is in order, not too extensive but maybe a set of new art work collectionor different lighting or a compete re apholstering job on the chairs...
Freshman (Year 1), Performing & Fine Arts, Personnal Control
This is an exemplary library!! keep it up!
Freshman (Year 1), Performing & Fine Arts, Other
About this survey--many questions were redundant and unnecessary. About the employees: sometimes I don't feel comfortable checking out certain materials, feeling as if the checkout people are judging me.
Freshman (Year 1), Performing & Fine Arts, Library as Place
The library is a very useful haven for just relaxing and thinking, and I use it for that more than anything else. I think the library needs to have more books by Hunter S. Thompson available.
Freshman (Year 1), Performing & Fine Arts, Access to Information
later hours would be helpfull
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Personnal Control
I always seem to find what i need eventually. That is good enough for me.
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Access to Information
Your buisness hours during holidays are too few, I often stay during holidays and I find that the times I wish to use the library do not corespond with the business hours.
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Library as Place
You did not have an option for concurrent enrollment services at the beginning of the survey. I am a junior in high school. However I really enjoy going to the library as a study and research center, and the computer labs are wonderful.
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Access to Information
The library must be open longer in the evenings, especially on a college campus where nights are the only times that people can get there. Being closed at five thirty on a friday night is unacceptable.
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Personnal Control
the library should be made easier to find things.
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Access to Information
I love the DLC because i can go there to make some presentations on power point, learn photoshop, make transparencies. I would like the library to have more rooms to check out for group study sessions.
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Personnal Control
This is my first semester back in school after a six year break, I'v found the library to be very good and I have been able to retreive anything I have needed without hinderance. Most of my time has been spent using to computer lab for printing out papers, I have found this extreamly helpfull since I do not have a printer at home. All in all no complaints, Thanks
Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math, Access to Information
I would like the library to stay open later on Friday and Saturday night.
Freshman (Year 1), Social Sciences / Psychology, Library as Place
better ventilation would be great! the air gets a bit stale in here (not very condusive to mental clarity)
Freshman (Year 1), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
More avaiblity of the Humboldt room and its resorces
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Access to Information
I love that the computers are all new. You can find anything you need at the library, but i hate the book stacks. i can never find anything there.
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Personnal Control
Being able to renew books online is super convenient.
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Access to Information
I think that Humboldt's library is small, and has a pretty small selection of books (compared to other Universities) and some ugly seventies styling. It is functional though. We have up to date technology and although I have never taken advantage of it the digital learning center seems like an exalent resource. I think that we could use a larger computer lab and more computer terminals to access personal e-mail, not just the library catalog. Personaly a great library is one that has a great selection of titles, government documents that are easily accesable, staff that are helpfull and avaible (especialy in the book stacks), has technology avaible to its users and provides a quiet, calm, creative space in which to learn, study, and reflect. P.S. Sorry about the creative spelling.
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Personnal Control
The library has good services, and an extensive collection. I have never had a problem with anything to do with the library.
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Other
None
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Affect of Service
I haven't really found anything to complain about with our library rather than just a few employees who weren't willing to help but everyone else seemed very nice.
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Access to Information
the copy center is something I know students are always wondering on their hours. the hours really don't mixes with the students needs. extend or make hours in the afternoons and/or the weekends also. another thing is a catalog list of the entire CD/phonorecords would be nice.
Freshman (Year 1), Undecided, Access to Information
I wish that the library had more of the recent books that are being published, mainly fiction. And also more copies of books.
Freshman (Year 1), Other, Access to Information
I don't really interact with the staff, however when I went with my class Linda, I don't know her last name I believe it starts with a B and she knows about Kinesiology, was a very nice lady. She was very helpful and also appologetic that the library did not carry any journals that related directly to Physical Therapy. Maybe you guys should consider prescribing to one. Everyone I have come in contact have been really nice. The candy dish near the ID card replacement room had the best Lemonhead I ever had in my life!!! Thanks
Freshman (Year 1), Other, Personnal Control
It is just fine.
Freshman (Year 1), Other, Library as Place
The 3rd floor is a great place to study when you need quiet, but as far as comfortable places to sit...I am forced to go to the 2nd floor and study amongst talkers, apple chompers, etc.
Freshman (Year 1), Other, Library as Place
The library is too hot sometimes, and makes it uncomfortable to study for a length of time. Also, there should be a security guard wandering the halls to make the remote corners more comfortable and safe.
Freshman (Year 1), Other, Personnal Control
I would very much like to see a more effective method developed for finding books that are not on the shelf, but aren't checked out.
Sophomore (Year 2), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
I think the libraries internet page and all the search tools that it has to offer is the best thing. I'm not on to try and dig through books and some times don't have the time but the web page helps out a great deal for those late night paper or study sessions! THANKS GUYS!
Sophomore (Year 2), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
I have found the library staff to be helpful, most of the time. I would only suggest further organization of the reserve desk. Another problem I have encountered is a continual abscence of books. Many times when conducting research and compiling a list of call numbers from the library's site, only half of the books are on the shelf. Perhaps additional employees would aid in the turn around time for re-shelfing books. Overall I am very pleased with HSU's library. I especially like the second floor couch area near the children's section. Thanks for caring.
Sophomore (Year 2), Business, Affect of Service
I like the way our library is set up. It is really helpful to me, and i am able to find my information easily. The poeple are friendly and helpful! Thanks
Sophomore (Year 2), Communications / Journalism, Access to Information
please continue to offer the course on the library info and database its awesome
Sophomore (Year 2), Education, Personnal Control
the magazines are not easily set up, it is kind of hard to just find the current issue of "Time" or "Newsweek" with the current setup, all I ever see is tons of magazines that have extremely narrow focuses (like German film magazines)....I'd like to see more mainstream magazines and I setup that has a better set-up
Sophomore (Year 2), Education, Access to Information
the library is a very good sorce that us college students have and i am happy that i finally discovered it. you all shoould promote it more to incoming freshmen.
Sophomore (Year 2), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
As a whole I am satisfied with the library services. It would be nice if all of the electronic resources, databases, etc. could be utilized from other locations such as at home for authorized users. Also, some of the student employees should receive more technical training and some customer service training.
Sophomore (Year 2), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
With the information age it would ne nice to have longer hours at either the library or computer labs. I personally feel that at least one lab (Gist 218) should be open all night. There is a rush to get work done during the day and some people, myself included, find it less stressful to study and work on computers in the evening/night. Thanks!
Sophomore (Year 2), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
please extend library hours on fridays and weekends
Sophomore (Year 2), Engineering / Computer Science, Library as Place
The gates in the front of the library that you walk through when entering and exiting the premisise, emit an extremely high pitch sound that gives me an imediate headache. I can hear this sound throughout the entire 1st floor, and therefore cannot use the 1st floor. I have spoken with other students regarding this issue, and they agree that the noise if very disturbing as well.
Sophomore (Year 2), General Studies, Affect of Service
I really enjoy the library. It is a nice place to relax adn get some work done. I would like a greater variety of magazines. I have been treated well by staff except the first time I came to teh library, I was a freshmen and didn't know the rules, a staff person yelled at me because I didn't know the library was closing and wasn't leaving. I really love the painting by the newspapers of the big fish.
Sophomore (Year 2), General Studies, Access to Information
People need to be available during all business hours to assist students with questions they might have (especially with microfilm/fiche). Signs and more efficient labeling of resources would be extremely beneficial to students trying to find information without having to ask for help. Possibly a directory in the lobby with a building floorplan and where to find certain items,i.e. journals, periodicals, microfilm, etc. then have a localized directory or directories on each floor.
Sophomore (Year 2), Health Sciences, Library as Place
My only comment is that there is no area exclusively designated for quiet studying/learning. The tables in the back can be very loud with conversation and/or tutoring and studying and I would prefer an inviting, comforting place that I could study in peace and quiet. I would definitely be there more often, instead of in my car studying.
Sophomore (Year 2), Health Sciences, Other
:D
Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities, Access to Information
Reshelving should be quicker. The tours should take you in to the computer labs.
Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities, Access to Information
You need to stay open later at night, this is a university library for goodness sakes and students need a place where they can go to study at night that's quite and promotes learning. They may not have this at home. Of the subjects most commonly cheched out more often more books should be purchased. And of the subjects that havent been checked out since the 70's those books should be gone through and gotten rid of.
Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities, Access to Information
hours when open need to be changed.
Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities, Library as Place
periodicals are difficult to access. Also, there should be more and larger rooms available to reserve for student study sessions. Thank you. Overall, a great library.
Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities, Personnal Control
I used to work at a campus library when I lived in Santa Cruz and although their library had more volumes and more resources, I think Humboldts library is by far superior to the quality of studying that can be done. I commend whoever set up the library because it is very convenient to find a quiet place to be productive. Coming to the library each day to study is sometimes the highlight of the day.
Sophomore (Year 2), Law, Access to Information
We need more books and more help, than just one person at the help desk.
Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math, Library as Place
It is a really nice place and one of the only places I can get a ton of homework done without losing focus.
Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math, Personnal Control
I believe the library is doing a good job in meeting the students needs. Keep up the good work
Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math, Library as Place
I think the educational resouces and the staff our great but I honestly can't be in there for very long at a time. It seems so depressing to me with the dark carpets and the flourescent lights. It's just not a place that I can go and study or do homework at.
Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math, Access to Information
I usually come to the library to study, sometimes to do research. When it comes to research, I am satisfied with the resources and the convenience of accessing them. When it comes to the library hours, I am not. Appearantly, I am the only one who studies on Friday and Saturday nights, because the library is not open past 5:45 pm on these nights. My home is not a good study environment, so I study at the library, very often past 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. I am incredibly dissapointed in the services of the library regarding this issue as I am sure others are as well.
Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math, Access to Information
later hours on sunday
Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math, Access to Information
later hours, cafe or coffe bar inside would be nice, more take home resourses like movies
Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math, Access to Information
I would like to see the scientific research databases streamlined, as well as more subscription to scientific journals.
Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
I find it ridiculous that in the Humboldt Room you have collections of books where there is more than one copy but the extras are not allowed to be checked out of the room for overnight study, etc.. Furthermore, upon asking questions of employees, most don't know anything and one administrative female did not listen to the question presented and placed a value judgment on what was asked so that I never got the answer, I was instead faced with prejudice. Perhaps she forgot her medicine that day. It was extremely rude.
Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
Maybe there could be some kind of directions (or better ones) in how to find research on different subject or for using the advanced search.
Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology, Library as Place
The library is a great place to study, has good rooms to study in with chalkboards, but needs more! It is a good atmosphere, and inviting. Keep up the good work!
Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology, Affect of Service
I believe that the employees at the library are very helpful and knowledgable.
Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology, Affect of Service
when the librarian explains the process of using services online...she is very fast about what she says...and explains it as if everyone understands...when from my experience most people didn't get it .
Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology, Library as Place
More quite study areas...with good couches!
Sophomore (Year 2), Undecided, Affect of Service
Sharmon, you have some excellent people in your department. Thank you for having such helpful, knowledgeable and willing staff.
Sophomore (Year 2), Undecided, Affect of Service
The periodical employees are especially helpful and knowlegable
Sophomore (Year 2), Other, Access to Information
I feel the staff and librarians are very helpful. I think the catalyst could be made easier to use. Also I think movies should be made available for overnight checkout to students.
Sophomore (Year 2), Other, Affect of Service
The Library needs to install better customer service in their employees.
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
I don't like the way the electronic catolog is set up it is very confusing to me. Also their is not a very good section on Enviromental Science topics the books are all outdated and full of useless information.
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
I would like the library to stay open later on fri and sat
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Library as Place
Overall library services are very good but there need to be more rooms available for group study. Instead the limited number of rooms is dwindling due to conversion to offices.
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
The staff is great when you can find them! Maybe put more computer helpers in the lab for times when the printer isn't working, you can't find your file, etc.
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Library as Place
Keep up the good work, sometimes its crowded and cold.
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Other
the survey is great to improve your work there at that library
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Personnal Control
The only people that work in the library that seem to have a clue as to how things work are the students. The rest of the librarians, if you ask them what time it is, they give you a disortation on how the clock was invented without ever telling you what time it is. Also, I am STRONGLY offended by the use of the library display case to promote religion. If I see a religious message in that case again I may have to put a rock through it!
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Affect of Service
Everyone is friendly and helpful especially in the Humboldt Room. Thank you.
Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
Copying prices are expensive, but the computer services can not be beaten......
Junior (Year 3), Business, Access to Information
I think the HSU library is average. There is a lot of older information, doesn't seem to contain as many new and different books and resources. I have asked for help from the library information desk and hardly been helped at all. Rather than help, the woman behind the desk just spurted out that they didn't have any information on what I was looking for and suggested I try renting a video on the subject. The subject I was searching for information on was "Divorce", how can there be no information on Divorce in a library. On the other hand, I have received fabulous help while in the computer labs and I use them on a daily basis. If and when I do have problems the staff in the lab is great. They are patient and attentive, and always have an answer to my questions. Thank you for taking the time to read my response.
Junior (Year 3), Business, Library as Place
There is terrible air circulation and for the six years that I have used this library - I always have to leave because I get sick to my stomach or I fall asleep. The environment is not intellectually stimulating (ex: orange couches - I might as well go to McDonalds). The multi-media center is phenominally "old fashioned", and employees are either not very helpful with it or they make you feel stupid.
Junior (Year 3), Communications / Journalism, Personnal Control
As a journalism major I would like to have a guide to all the library's resources. Because I think there are some rare and important documents there but I wouldn't know how to get them.
Junior (Year 3), Communications / Journalism, Affect of Service
I feel that almost all of the library employees that tried to assisted me are incompetent. In all cases I only asked for a minimum amount of help that any employee should be able to efficiently and quickly deal with my request. I have worked as a clerk and have managed stores before, and I would expect more out of my employees. It sometimes seems as if nearly all your employees are new.
Junior (Year 3), Communications / Journalism, Other
I love the library, looking through old books to find powedered pot in the crease is just classic!
Junior (Year 3), Communications / Journalism, Access to Information
In general the HSU library is great considering the size of the University. My only MAJOR complaint is the library's hours. How do you justify closing a library at 10:45 on a Sunday night????? This is a complaint that is not only uttered by me but by many of my peers who I know won't take the time to answer this survey. But please, do not sacrifice your great customer service to fulfill this request. It is only a suggestion. You guys are great to take the time to ask our opinions. Thanks. -Chris
Junior (Year 3), Communications / Journalism, Affect of Service
Some of the emplyees are jerks. In addition, there is very little quiet comfortable space. Most of the space is taken up by desks in the open and such where a lot of loud group work is done. One of the rooms should be dedicated to comfortable seating and absalute silence for individual study.
Junior (Year 3), Education, Access to Information
I would like to see easier acess to reserve items...
Junior (Year 3), Education, Access to Information
The service, with only one exception (and I think that was a student) has been excellent. However, finding books through the jungle of computerized data bases takes dedication, fortitude and a trust in a higher being. Also, diversification is lacking. Recently I tried to find books written by Palistinian authors and found none (0) other than a children's picture book co-written by an Israeli and a Palistinian.
Junior (Year 3), Education, Access to Information
New copy machines/ New couches needed
Junior (Year 3), Education, Access to Information
The woman at the information desk with the accent is great and is always helpful. She is very nice. And the copy machines should be checked more often for problems.

Library services might include a periodical check through the library, especially during summer, to remove people that are not students. It's frustrating to feel uncomfortable in a library that I pay dearly to access.

My only real complaint is that extremely stinky hippie that just walks around out and goes through the trash cans. I wish he could be told to take a shower or leave.
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
more hours would be a plus. beter air quality in the computer room. and more PCs
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
It would be nice to have longer weekend and Friday hours. When you have projects due, weekends are prime dates to meet out of class and, research still has to be done when the library closes, and we are out of luck until the next day. I would like to be able to work for more than 6 hours on Saturday. Like wise with Friday. If you are in class all day, it does not leave very much time to get work done.
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
A lot of your books are out dated. Many of the books I have checked out are from the '70's. CCAT has a better selection of up to date books on energy etc. You should get Home Power magazine, and more "guy" periodicals, you have Rosie, ms., Vogue, etc. but no car mags, surfing mags, etc. The one guitar magazine is for classical players only and probably read by only a handfull of people, guitar player magazine would serve more people and be more usefull.
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
I find the library services as complete as can be expected with the ever changing rate at which information is availble(Internet etc.).
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Personnal Control
I like how I can access the library catalog remotely, and how easy it is to find resources on my own using what the library has available. It's easy and quick, and really nice for people like me who don't always enjoy asking questions.
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Library as Place
Some of the chairs are pretty uncomfortable and sometimes library empoyees are a little too loud (I notice the noise coming from the third floor and near the microfiche from time to time).
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Library as Place
I like to feel safe and I still haven't come to any conclusions about how safe I feel inside or just outside the library
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Library as Place
an outdoor patio in which students could study would be great for nice days. The one that exists has noisy machinery. Some great scientists got rolling just by having a place to hang out and talk math/science..
Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
It would be more convienient if the Library had longer buisness hours on Saterday and Sunday and closed later on the weekdays. Sometimes I need to study later than the library is open. I love the videos that the library contains on variety of subjects. It helps me learn in anima when I need something different from reading text books. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I have always been satisfied with the help I get.
Junior (Year 3), General Studies, Access to Information
longer hours on the weekends and do all of my homework.
Junior (Year 3), Health Sciences, Affect of Service
I usually don't ask questions of the library personel because I have been snapped at before. But I have also had positive experiences with library staff, like I did today. The woman at the check out counter was very pleasant and helpful. It makes it more enjoyable to do my work when I know the staff is going to be nice. I just don't know how helpful they are. I am sometimes scared to ask for help and usually I just can't find anyone to ask.
Junior (Year 3), Health Sciences, Library as Place
Noise level is high and it is difficult to study in. Some of the personel lack manners. They talk loudly and just give the impression that they are in a bar instead of an institution of learning.
Junior (Year 3), Health Sciences, Access to Information
It would be nice to have a service where you could schedual an appointment for a private tour and instruction on library services, especialy for the data base. Also there is one librarian, female, with longer redish brown hair who is always extreamly load when she talks; this is very disruptive.
Junior (Year 3), Health Sciences, Access to Information
I feel that they should have longer hours, and a larger building to further their collection of books and sources.
Junior (Year 3), Humanities, Access to Information
Your hours suck. You need to be open later, students are often up late studying. Your hours especially suck on Fri and Sat, you need to be open longer on those days.
Junior (Year 3), Humanities, Access to Information
In general I am satisfied with the library's services but I don't see too many on staff at the information desk and that's where I need most of my help. The staff at the front desk are efficient and friendly.
Junior (Year 3), Humanities, Personnal Control
For the love of God, get a better system than catalyst. It is so difficult to use. I hate boolean operators. Furthermore link us with databases that aren't darn confusing such as Lexus Nexus. Plus, those mac computers are terrible. I have yet to visit the lab where my disc isn't eaten, the machine doesn't freeze or something fails to print. More often than not, the help desk is inept. It would also be nice to have more wonderful librarians on staff to answer our questions during more extended hours. Research in this library is an arduous task. Perhaps you could have a librarian who specialized in student research.
Junior (Year 3), Humanities, Access to Information
1.The copy center hours are not adaquate- they should be open longer hours including evenings. 2. There should be more staff there in the library on weekends to help answer students questions and help them with research- I find that most students I know use the library mainly on weekends and in the evenings. 3. There needs to be an easier way to find artricles in the microfilm drawers. I found no binder or anything listing what information was in what drawer. I had to manually open each drawer inorder to find the one that had the articles (new york times) that i needed.
Junior (Year 3), Law, Access to Information
the library needs to be open more and there needs to be more artwork and creative things to make us want to stay there more often
Junior (Year 3), Performing & Fine Arts, Library as Place
Honestly, the library really needs an interior facelift. It isn't the most comfortable, conducive environment for READING. Please think about work-spaces without blinders, more like tables. Conserving electricity is important, but so is lighting that is easy on the eyes as it reflects off of white or off-white paper. I find my eyes straining against the interior environment of that particular campus building. The couches also do no enticing in the manner they are arranged, I don't even want to hang out there. However, the few times I really needed to use the library it was closed. LIBRARY CLOSED BEFORE MIDNIGHT ON A STATE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS AND NO 24-HOUR COMPUTER LAB ACCESS...hmm seems odd to me. But maybe I've only been to 2 large state universities in Maryland and they just have a better hang on the logistics of architecture for the environment's uses.

Reserve materials and compact disc collection should be more organized. Employees have sent me away saying that they were unable to locate materials, but were able to find them when I asked them to look again.

on the website please categorize cd's according to genre: r&b, blues, etc. please think about staying open at least 1 hr later on friday and saturday nights.

I am frustrated with the CD collection service. It needs to be updated. I have to have a list of at least 5 CD's that say that they are checked in on the computer, then when i take my list up to the desk, I'm lucky if they can find 2 that are actually there. Also I have a problem with the library catalog. several times I have known a specific title of a book which i have typed in correctly, and the computer says that there is no such book, when in actuallity it is up on the shelf. The workers are overall very friendly and helpful.

a lot of the time the info desk just doesn't know a whole lot. especially about interlibrary loans. i ask how long it takes usually and they have no answer. just i don't know. plus when checking reserved materials, they often ask for my i.d. again right after i have been up there. i know they are just doing there job, but it is irritating when i KNOW they recognize me, but have to ask me again. are you that hard on them about it?

not enough journal titles. Current journals in primatology much needed.
Junior (Year 3), Science / Math, Access to Information
I have attended a number of universities, and this school has an excellent library with a very helpful staff. The only improvement that I would like to see is having later hours on Friday night (which I understand is difficult). I do not like the fact that the library is closed at 5:45 on Fridays because it the only time I have to study on weekends due to work. You guys do a great job!
Junior (Year 3), Science / Math, Library as Place
I don't think that queit study is promoted or enforced enough at the library. I spend at least 20 hours a week in the Library studying due to the requirments of my course load and I am often distracted due to the noise level of the conversations of people who decide to sit down next to me and start a discussion. I think that quiet study areas should be expanded and/or more defined.
Junior (Year 3), Science / Math, Access to Information
the computer help desk is very helpfull, and the study areas are quiet and clean. It would seem that the book selection is outdated in some of the sciences. More current works could be added, outdated books could be retired. Science information is always changing, and a school with an elite statas such as ours, should have oceanography books which date in the nineties. Any science book pubished and not revised resently is almost a waste of space.
Junior (Year 3), Science / Math, Library as Place
I think that the library staff is always courteous and helpful. However, I don't agree at all with the recent decision (without student consent) to reduce the number of rooms available for groups to study in. The groups that used to study in rooms and thus not disrupt other students now have to expose the rest of the library to their discussions. Since the library is one of, if not the only place where classrooms can be reserved on campus for groups meetings, it bothers me that no explanation was forthcoming about the recent changes. Otherwise, the library is very comfortable and easy to use.

The digital literacy lab does not have adequate hours available to students. Minitab was not installed in the computers, and it was supposed to be there. I reported it to the helpdesk 4 times over a two month period. It took months to fix it. This was an important tool to be used by biometry students. This posed a great hinderance to myself and other biometry students. Some people at the help desk act like its a pain to get up and assist some students with computer problems. Overall, the library staff is friendly, especially at the circulation desk. The website and oncores is a great resource. Library hours should be more consistent.....should close at eleven on Sundays, and it should be open later on Fri and Sat for those students who are not party animals. The copiers on the second floor are crap...I've had constant problems using them, the machines take money and do not provide a copy. This has happened three times, and when I called the copy center for help (as the sign says above the machine) I got a recording. This is no help, and it has happened repeatedly. So, I do my copying at Kinko's, where there is always someone to offer assistance. I have had to pay 10 cents for copies, instead of the 8 cent rate when using HSU card because my wallet was stolen. Copies with or without the card should be 8 cents, so students aren't getting ripped off. It's cheaper at Kinko's.
Junior (Year 3), Science / Math, Personnal Control
It's hard to learn to use Catalyst; the lists it gives you are often not what you're looking for, and I had a hard time finding out about periodicals on it. Also, if the library is in charge of the copy machines, they should be checked often to make sure they're working; I've found several of them to have problems a few days in a row, with no signs on them to indicate this. Mostly, though, you're doing a good job--with helpfulness and a good study atmosphere.
Junior (Year 3), Science / Math, Access to Information
I really don't like that the library doesn't open until 11am on Saturday. I like studying in the morning and I find the library a productive place to study. I think that the libary should be open more. When I have 8am classes and a test in the morning it would be nice to come to the libary to study in the morning for more than a half an hour. Later hours would be good too, unitll like 1am.
Junior (Year 3), Science / Math, Access to Information
My biggest flustration with the library is the overall condition of the research journal section. I know that they are used frequently, therefore they need to be addressed at least twice daily. Too many journals are scattered all over the library for days at a time. I dropped of a journal one am and it took 48 hours for it to make it back to the shelf. Please address this!!!! Also, I would like to make a note about the copy machine system. As many copies as students make it is disappointing to be charged 8 cents a copy. Really 4-5 cents is more than enough.

Most people don't use or purchase Mac computers, and it makes it difficult when you switch all of the lab's over to Macs, leaving no option for the PC user but to learn new ways. As a math major, I often need to make graphs and learning how to use Macs is so time consuming when the homework takes long enough. Are they super cheap or something?
Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
I believe the employees are polite and approachable, yet some have no clue how to use the library. The amount of material available is excellent, especially the print media (like newspapers and magazines). Some books are outdated, but usually I can find material that is modern. The only complaint I have is that the environment is not as comfortable as I'd like it to be (IE. dim lighting, uncomfortable chairs and sometimes it is too cold).

I appriciate the classroom available for students to use in the library. Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology, Personnal Control
I have worked at various libraries at other universities for work study so I am probably more familiar with how to utilize the library than most students. My problem is in utilizing the computer system for abstracts. I can't tell if the abstracts are actually at our library or not. This part of the database is very confusing to me. If the abstract is not at the library I am stumped as to where to find it. It would be nice if I could access those abstracts on the computer database rather than have to search the school or web for the dissertation or abstract. It is great to know these papers are out there somewhere, but frustrating not to be able to find them quickly and easily. Perhaps I am not utilizing the database correctly.

The print collectioon has many gaps. In my primary are of focus the lbrary's books are few (I could cary all the material with one hand) out of date and barely on topic. My personal collection is better than whats available in the entire library on the topic.
Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
I believe that the staff in the library are very helpfull and friendly. However, there is a need for newer books, and easier way to locate journal articles through the electronic catalog.
Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
I would be happier if the book sections were paid more attention to. It is sometimes frustrating when I need a book that is "not checked out", and yet I am still not able to find it.

The staff has been made aware of the noise problem on many occasions by many people, but seems to have done nothing about it. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I remember when people only wispered in Libraries, now, it's not uncommon for people to yell, laugh, sing, and play harmonicas. Granted, these are all great things to do, and I am happy when I see people do them in other locations, just not the library. Please do something to endure that we have a quiet place to study.

The Librarians and Interlibrary Loan people are absolutely great, but the knowledge of the students working at the library should be supplemented. I wish that the photocopying service room was open before noon, it is very hard for me to get there between 12 and 4. Thank you!
Junior (Year 3), Other, Affect of Service
I have generally had good experiences at the library. Often times I don't feel like there are enough quiet places to study, but I may be coming at very busy times of the day or maybe I just know of all the places available to me. Most of the staff I have encountered has been helpful, although I must say, some could probably be a little friendlier.

Junior (Year 3), Other, Affect of Service
At the front desk I have always been treated very well. In particular I acknowledge Anthony and Tony for their exceptional service. There are three or four others who really helped me out but I can't recall their names. Essentially, the library here has a strong understanding of the meaning of service and they deliver it well. That is saying a lot in a town known for bad customer service.

Closing on Friday and Saturday? Those are the two designated days/hours used as catch up hours and the library is closed. Put down the bong and think about it.
Junior (Year 3), Other, Access to Information
There should be more staff to help in the computer rooms and information desk. Also the hours on Friday and Saturday should be extended. For some students the library is the only place we can actually study. On the weekends there is no place to go to study.
Junior (Year 3), Other, Library as Place
it would be nice if the quiet zones were enforced, instead of having to put up with loud converstaions from rude students. I had that experience this morning downstairs!!
Junior (Year 3), Other, Library as Place
in general i am very pleased with this library. i do wish there were more open hours on the weekend; the hours offered during the week are better. the biggest problem i have is the noise epidemic. it's getting more and more difficult to find quiet spaces to study. it's very much like being in a restaurant just as its getting busy. one person starts to raise there volume level then pretty soon everybody is being loud. it has been suggested that if someone near you is being too loud, to go over to them and ask them to lower their voice. the main problem is that their noise stems from disrespect. the suggestion to lower their volume would, therefore, be better received coming from a member of the library staff. i know that no problem concerning large #'s of people in the same bldg. can easily be solved but i seem to notice more indifference from library staff than anything else. it's almost as if this isn't a staff duty anymore. libraries should be quiet places to think and i've seen that mentality dwindling. i think it would be great to have lib. staff wandering around doing their duties but also reminding people to keep it down. thanks for your time:)
Junior (Year 3), Other, Affect of Service
The negative marks concerning curtesy to the patron, is based on last week's support from a lady at the information desk (slim blonde). Who did not smile, who made ingratious comments, while conveying she did not care if she insulted me. She acted like she worked somewhere else and had to do this info job for lunch or something. Everyone else has always made the library proud.

On Saturday, April 13, 2002, I visited the library to make copies of an article on reserve. Every copy machine on the second floor was out of order, either because it was broken or it was out of paper. When I tried to use the one copy machine on the first floor, I was able to copy three pages before it too ran out of paper. I informed the guy at the circulation desk of the problem and he said that they didn't service the copy machines and the copy center was closed. I asked if I could go to Seiman's Hall to make my copies, but he said no, I could not leave the library with the reserve item that I needed to copy. Eventually another guy came to my rescue and fixed the copy machine on the first floor. The machines on the second floor remained out of service. This is not the only time that something like this has happened to me at the library. There must be some way for the library to maintain the integrity of the copy machines. Thank you for hearing my pain.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
In general our library is very good. For comfort, please bring back the couches to the walls around the stacks (for some, the library is the only place on campus to catch a quick nap between classes and the first floor is too noisy for this). Also, why does Humboldt Room have such restricted hours? Why not the same as the rest of the library?
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
The only problem I have with the library are out of date books. I am constantly working research projects and there are rarely enough books for me to referance that have current data. Most books are older than me!
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
Good collection of progressive scientific journals - could use more. Excellent CD collection. Get some real PC computers, not wishy-washy PowerPC's.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Personnal Control
Overarching policies should not be used to hinder responsible library users. If I have specific needs, a policy should not interfere with those needs. There should be more ways for library staff to help individual library users, without being restricted by policy. For example, if I need a book that is in use for a month by another student, I should be allowed to get one of the available copies at another library, through interlibrary loan. The purpose of the library is to allow people access to books - it is a wonderful service. In the spirit of service, if another library has three copies of the book I need sitting on the shelf, one should be made available to me, in spite of the fact that our library already owns a copy. I should not be sent an e-mail telling me to check the shelves more carefully in the future, implying that I have not carefully investigated my need. The library must be run as a community service, carefully avoiding penalties, unreasonable restrictions, and a negative atmosphere. For the most part, the library maintains a good atmosphere, creating an atmosphere of learning. When I am treated as an irresponsible or untrustworthy person, my learning is impeded.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
The library is helpful to me in many respects as I've indicated in my responses above. I think the library would be more beneficial to me if greater emphasis were placed on quiet study areas, dedicated group-study rooms, and extended (later) operating hours. The library staff are generally quite helpful and the resource base that the library provides is good. I do feel, however, that the library's exclusive use of Apple computers is of a significant hindrance to its computing resources. While emulation software allows these computers to run PC programs, they generally do not perform well in this respect and subsequently limit the computing resources available to the end user. I don't think that the library's computing resources should be comprised exclusively of Apple computers but feel that a mixture of both PC's and Apple computers would be most beneficial to users. Thank you.

There is a strong need for Students to gain access to Journal titles that need to be ordered. Either sent to home, or for pick up at the library. Also online journals and news in print online would be very useful to students. Also the website for the library needs captions under the topics to be selected. Not everyone knows that journal titles can be found under the periodicles and not the catylist.

Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Library as Place
The cocstruction taking place during prime school hours is inappropriate! Students are unable to learn, concentrate, breath due to pollution, access the entry well, and the ventilation is terrible. Using the library is a must to be successful in college. It is unfortunate that this college experience is sour because of maintence that sould have been prioritized better.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Library as Place
I appreciate the help desk and the computer help personal. They respond rather efficiently to your needs. I reccomend installing a drop box for the fragile CD's that should not be returned in the after hours bin (less you want a $1 fine). Sometimes it is hard to find a quiet plce to study. Maby provise more group study areas that can be seperated for inividual quiet areas. I definelty appreciate the library services. Keep expanding the CD collection!
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
The main floor is always noisy. I do not care for the online journal subscriptions. It is difficult to preview articles.I would prefer to have access to complete print collections of scientific journals. On the positive side, the library staff is friendly and knowledgable.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Library as Place
I appreciate lack of enforcement of the library eating and drinking rule...there isnt always a dry place to catch a bite or a drink while getting some quality reading done. The radio can be pretty loud in the depot. I am not opposed to some type of discipline for damage done to equipment as a result of innappropriate consumption.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
I am dissatisfied with the library hours in the early morning. I would like to see the library open earlier than the current hours. blm12@humboldt.edu
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Library as Place
The library really needs to have a quiet study area that is open 24 hours. I think that every college student has the right to a safe place to study at all hours. I think that access to the library should be based on our current I.D.'s. I am tired of all the street hippies that come in because they are disruptive and make me feel uncomfortable. It would also be nice if there was a cafe ajacent to the library. The air circulation could also be improved.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
The people who work at the front desk, the computer help desk, and in reference are very nice and helpful, but it's frequently really hard to find someone at the information desk. This makes it difficult to answer questions about library services.
Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies, Access to Information
It would bw nice to have trained staff who know how to research for apecific school project like wildlife lifetable projects, Permaculture anything really. Maybe expert students who are from a variety of popular majors and programs on campus who are available to students to use as a resource for our specific projects. It may not be feasable but librarians don't always know what we are talking about and it would make it easier for students to really get good information and find help for projects. Maybe even a partnership with the tutoring center or something? But over all a good job and friendly professional staff, the students are a bit lacluster at times but I know where they are comming from.

I would like to see a list compiled on the avalible CD's and record selection. There is no way to browse the collection in it's entireity. You have to search the catalyst and hope you find it!!! Please make a list or make the collection avalible to look over.
Senior (Year 4), Business, Access to Information
I would love to see the library open earlier on the weekends, it does not open until 11am and I think that is too late. It would be nice if they could open it at 10am and have computer access open at that time too. Sometimes it is way too warm in the library which is a major deterrent for me using it. Please look in to more ventilation or use the heater less. More clearly define areas for "group study" i.e. louder areas, it is distracting to be in a "quiet area" and have large groups being noisy.
Senior (Year 4), Business, Personnal Control
The library is a little hard to initially navigate around, because the sign aren't very consistent. One day it took me 20 minutes to find the daily newspapers. Then again, maybe its just me.

I think the library needs to invest in better chairs that are more comfortable to study in on the 2nd floor.
Senior (Year 4), Business, Library as Place
You should get more comfortable chairs.
Senior (Year 4), Business, Library as Place
the only concern i have is the noise levels at times in the library, when studing, study groupos would come in and would make a lot of noise talking about thier study material and athough their tring to be quiet it is still very loud when theyre the only ones making noise, i just i would just suggest more materails be posted about being quiet in libraies and requiring study groups to get a room.
Senior (Year 4), Business, Affect of Service
The library services are not bad services. There are many other libraries that have terrible service, but if this school is looking to improve on services, I believe that this is one good way to start at accomplishing that goal...

Senior (Year 4), Business, Access to Information
No more classes in computer lab. Longer business hours in copy center. Refill staplers every where all the time! Copiers need more attention for all of them to function all of the time. Tell study groups to find a room to chat loudly in instead of out in the open on the first floor. But every thing else is great, thanks for asking.
Senior (Year 4), Business, Library as Place
I really appreciate the study rooms that are available to groups. I often wish there could be more because so many other people find them useful as well. However, I think this should be something that is offered by the departments and not just a library responsibility.

The library should be open for longer hours on Friday and Saturday. I get very irritated when I really don't have the library to go to on an occasional Friday night when homework must be done. I also don't appreciate having to leave the library early evening on Saturday. Usually, going to the library is an all afternoon/evening experience. I know others feel the same way. It seems that the library should be an available service and resource even on a Friday or Saturday night when we should be out relaxing and having fun! But alas, we're here to be students, and sometimes the only true quiet I can get is at the library. Otherwise, keep up the good work!
Senior (Year 4), Communications / Journalism, Affect of Service
Old timers on the library staff are often unpleasent, but fresher staff members are consistantly pleasant and show high energy.
Senior (Year 4), Communications / Journalism, Access to Information
The library book return box is closed to those students wanting to turn in "due" books at the circle. There is no parking available to run to the front of the library to return a book. This results in renewing a book not needed by me that might be useful to someone else. Also, there needs to be a walk-around monitor to quiet those folks with no manners for library policy. I go there to read and loud visiting is disturbing. Thank you. This survey was a good idea.

Senior (Year 4), Education, Personnal Control
I have had really poor service in this library, and I am not one of the multitude of hobos that seem to be allowed to congregate at the library my tuition dollars help to support. I have had employees do everything from outright ignore me or sneer at me because I interrupted their conversation because I needed to check out a book. The HSU library is otherwise a decent facility that allows for an indepth educational experience, and were it not for the homeless guys living there, and the snobby employees, I might give it a better rating. Thanks.

I like our library, I always find what I am looking for.The staff is helpful/
Senior (Year 4), Education, Affect of Service
I don['t consider myself much of an opinion on the library services, as I rarely take advantage of them at this point. However, when I have used the library, I have found the service to be excellent, with knowledgable staff willing to help in any way. Thank you for all your efforts.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Affect of Service
Staff is unwilling to help and often assume a superior attitude when asked for help. I do not feel comfortable asking for help and rarely get the information I desired when I do ask.

Senior (Year 4), Education, Personnal Control
I often have problems accessing data bases. It would be nice if there was somebody (more)available for technical support.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Library as Place
there is way too much noise throughout the library, there is NO WHERE on the first floor for quiet study. The computers in the lab are poor and should not be used AT ALL, except for independent use, people count on them to be available.

Please, please...place fans, deoderizers(?!) in bathrooms! Yikes! -- (esp Men's!!) I'm serious, it seems the venilation is very poor in the bathrooms, which can be downright nausiating. esp. on weekends. I guess it would be nicer to have mor electronic acess to Journals and the like, it always seems like the few journals I really need are never available! Thanks for being so kind and helpful though. Most of the time the student (work-study) staff is great also!!! Thanks again!
Senior (Year 4), Education, Access to Information
The hours of the library need to be changed so that students can access it during non-working hours as well as school hours. The library connection over the Internet still needs to be better.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Library as Place
The air quality in the library has improved in the 4 years that I have gone to school here, but I still think that it could be better.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Access to Information
your children's literature collection is very frustrating--almost any book pulled off the shelf appears as though it will fall apart in my hands. there have been chapter books written for children since the '70's, but you wouldn't know it looking for them in our library.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Access to Information
The library is an attractive and comfortable place to study, but I wish that the overall colection of materials was much more extensive. Research is often limited by lack of newer more up to date materials. The internet has its place, but it does not replace copies of journals, scientific studies, when intensive research is needed for a project.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Access to Information
I think that the people on staff are very friendly; there just are not enough of them. Some online research instructions would be helpful if more people cannot be hired. My biggest problem with library services occured in the summer sessions. If the university is offering summer sessions, then the library needs to support those students. The summer sesson hours were grossly insufficient.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Access to Information
It would be nice to have more modern texts and facilities in the library as well as more inviting study areas with comortable furnature.

get some new books make a place where people can eat, so they only eat in one place, but can still have a place to eat. RECYCLE BINS on all floors, instead of garbage cans, and since peopel eat in the library anyways, daily, make a bucket for compost also, that one of the students who works at the library, an added job task would be for them to take the compost on up to CCAT... it is only across campus...maybe one bin so that would really help out our landfill problem! the research is in the library if you want to know what i am talking about when i say, we need to help this problem. clean those couches more, they are soooo gross, hair and junk all over them, please. make sure the janitors pull out obvious recyclables out of the small trash bins!!!!! put signs on or near the trash cans REMINDING people to hold onto there recyclables for about a minute so they can dispense it in the right bin on campus. People will do it if they are constantly reminded, until they relize it does not inconvienience them at all after all. better lighting on second floor, way too dark for reading, it sucks. just how often are those bathroom stalls clean?
Senior (Year 4), Education, Access to Information
In my five years as a student here I have been quite satisfied with the resources available at our library. The staff are friendly and consistent. I would like to see more computers in the actual library, more hours with qualified staff at the help desk, and a more complete selection of journals and periodicals.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Affect of Service
The staff at the checkout counter are always warm and friendly. However the limited interactions I've had with the resource librarians has been frustrating. The ones I have dealt with have been cold, borderline rude and I am left confused about the sought after information.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Personnal Control
The biggest problem I have is that I can never find a book on the shelf when the computer says it is there, and I have never seen so many books misplaced. I workrd for a Library and when we not at the frone desk we were checking to see that the books were in the proper order. I have never seen anyone ever do that here.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Library as Place
I love the HSU library. A great place to study or relax with great hours.
Senior (Year 4), Education, Affect of Service
My only concern is that the employees who work at the library are often irritated and almost rude to students. I have felt as if your staff is more concerned with behind the counter activities and is reluctant to help.

I feel all the librarians and staff are doing a great job. One thing I would like to point out is the hours the library is opened on friday and saterday are terrible!! Closing at 6pm on friday and 5pm on saterday really effects me, the prime time for me to study at times is on a friday or saterday night and the fact that the library is closed then has been extreamly frustrating to me. Is it possible to extend these hours????
Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information

Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
It is frustrating that your hours on friday and saturday are so short. It is also frustrating that you allow grad students as well as professors to check out books for the duration of the semester, even with the option to place a hold on it. Perhaps you should look at those books that are checked out most frequently for the semester and stock an extra copy.
Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science, Personnal Control
I have attended three public universities in California, and HSU's library is hands down the best. The staff is always courteous and knowledgeable, there are more than adequate collections on every subject, and there are comfortable places for me to sit i.e. couches, which matters to me as a recovering back surgery patient. Thanks for all the great service!
Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science, Library as Place
Our library needs many more conference rooms to accomidate group projects and tutoring needs. Conference rooms and the library in general needs fresher air. Stale air causes drowsiness and hampers studying. Many of the designated quiet areas are along the sides of the building. The building appears to have no rain gutters. When it rains, which it does frequently, the "quiet" areas become extremely noisy. I find it impossible to study there at those times. The actual service from the employees has always been very good in my opinion.

The only problems I've had so far had to do with renewing my books online. I was able to renew one online but not the other. So I brought the one I couldn't renew online into the library and had it renewed -- 1 week (give or take a few days) later I got a late notice for the book I renewed online.

Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science, Library as Place
I think the overall attitude and competence of the librarians is excellent. My only problem, which is very aggrevating, is the student employees who while restocking shelves or what not are very noisy and inconsiderate on a consistant basis. This is very distracting and not helpful in the learning process.
Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science, Access to Information
towards the end of the semester, the hours should be longer, especially on weekends
Senior (Year 4), General Studies, Access to Information
Overall, the HSU library is good, and the upgrade to the computer interface and database access greatly improved remote access (a feature I appreciate.) I would suggest that accomodations be made for parent-students who may need to utilize the library with their children (this is also a campus-wide issue, I believe.) The face of the student population is changing, and students who are parents need to be taken into consideration. To the extent that students eat, talk, and otherwise use the library in "non-traditional" ways, so should parents be extended the same leniency (i.e., children in computer labs, etc.) Perhaps a designated area, so as not to offend other users, who might take exception to the presence of children?

The only problem that I have with the library is when requesting an article through interlibrary loan from home the process is too ong and drawn out. The windows close making it difficult to continue requesting various articles.
Senior (Year 4), Health Sciences, Library as Place
The main complaint I would file with the library is the lack of quiet study areas. I find that the staff on the second floor (not the copy area but the offices between the periodicals and the lounge) seem to go out of their way to assert their right to talk as loudly as possible while carrying on their buisness. I realize that the library is a workplace for these people, but they seem to lose sight of the fact that their workplace is supposed to be a quiet environment. The same complaint goes for the 3rd floor office in the northwest corner, the one with all of the computers setup in it. Students sometimes get carried away in conversation, but when someone is talking loudly, you can bet that it will be staff. I am talking about the professional staff, not the student employees. I also know that the situation with homeless people living in the library has been discussed ad nauseum but the fact is the two men who live on the second floor use various methods of intimidation to keep people away from the areas they are in. I am a 200 pound, 40 year old man and I am not easily intimidated by someone muttering, laughing out loud, or carrying on a conversation with themselves, but I have classmates who are 90 pound, 18 year old females who would and should be frightened by the antics of these two men.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Access to Information
the library staff has been excellect every time I have needed them. I think our library's problem is that we need more resources i.e. books, journal collections, etc. as well as a larger space an entire wing or floor dedicated to study groups and people who need to talk would be good, but that requires money that we probably dont have.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Affect of Service

This particular library has a problem with the one change machine, which doesn't work sometimes. Often times, when the Library is open late, noting else is on campus...maybe there could be a seperate snack room where people could get food and coffee, or change while in the building.

The interlibrary loan staff has made many of my research pojects possible, I am thankful for the timely fashion my requests have been handled in. Once I was unable to find a book on the shelf and when I asked for a librarian for help she belittled me and accused me of not writing down the correct call number when in fact I had the right number and the book was not on the shelf, I did not appreciate that.

I am very happy with the size of our library relative to the number of students we have. I do wish that we had more non-english language books, however, I do enjoy the ones we currently have. A Mayan- English dictionary would be wonerful.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Personnal Control
This is without doubt the best library I've had the pleasure to frequent. I often am amazed at how little other students know about all the wonderfully free aspects provided here. I tell them and they then are thrilled. There's great books and service and I shall miss the place when I leave.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Library as Place
to whom it may concern, i feel that improving the ventilation system and installing better lighting (such as informal desk lamps, and replacing the halogen lights with full spectrum) would greatly improve the environment. often the most desirable desks, those close to the windows that open, are taken up so i suggest having more windows that open. having a rotating exhibit of student art on one of the floors in the library would give students a sense of belonging and give the library a charm that it is greatly lacking. to better the quaility of air you might want to consider having more plants (preferably those that need little to no water). and a big contributor to the dirty feeling i get when inside the library is the furniture (particualarly on the second floor), it would be well worth it to reupolster and deep clean frequently to improve student health. thank you for your time. sincerly, adrian nickols

Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Library as Place
Everything's basically great about the library but it's hard to find a nice place that's quiet. Since it's hard to find quiet areas, I usually study at home.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Personnal Control
Finding parking near the library is a nightmare! I know that there is'nt much that you can do about it, but that's mainly why I rarely go there. For those of us who can't afford parking permits, it can be expensive as well- meters that run until 10:00? Even when at U.C. Berkeley, where parking is truly a nightmare, the meters are free after 5. Maybe a call to UPD from you guys would be more effective then calls from me have been. Another reason why I don't often spend time in the library is that, as a Spanish major, I rarely find the materials that I need, esp. when doing research. The order of the books in the stacks makes no sense to me, and when I have asked librarians to help me, while they were very courteous, and seemed to truly want to help, really couldn't. I know that HSU is a fairly small university, with limited funds, but if we could subscribe to a few more literary journals in Spanish, and maybe expand and organize the Spanish collection a bit, I would definately appreciate it, as would the rest of the Spanish Department. Otherwise, I have been pleased with the library as a whole, and generally find the staff to be helpful and courteous. Props also for the computer labs-I am impressed!
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Personnal Control
I don't bother coming in to the HSU library anymore. Every time I have requested a book to be found, it has not been found. The books seem to be old, there are not enough new books in the art field. My old (state funded) comunity college has a better selection of art books and a better reserve system. If a book isn't on the shelves, it will be found withen a week for you, here they never find it.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Library as Place
Why in God's name did they take out the couches that were along the walls in the quiet study areas of the 2nd and 3rd floors?!! It's freaking ridiculous, is what it is. I go to the library because I'm tired and my back hurts from sitting in desk chairs all day, so I like to lay on my stomach or back and read in a QUIET environment, and those areas are often the only place to go where people are not in their little groups giggling and whispering too loudly. If it was to keep the smelly transients from sleeping in the library, well, what about the students who want to read there and catch a quick bout of shut-eye in between classes? That area is now utterly uninviting to me, and I found myself unable to stay in the library to study because I was so disgusted. I need QUIET places to study, where no people are staring at me while I read and write. I am shy, and don't like scrutiny or being looked at when I'm trying to study, and cubicles are like little prisons. I like my nice couch among the privacy of the stacks. Phooey! Give me back my crusty old green-yellow couches! Curses on that decision! Arg!!! A row of chairs does not replace them! Arg!!!
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Library as Place
friday's hours could be extendend. Old furniture could be replaced, especially the uncomphortable chairs at the desks around the windows on each floor, as well as the somewhat revolting couches that seem dirty. the selections of books is wonderful, and the quanty of scientic journals adequit. lighting and air circulation improvement would be wonderful as well as increased privet study rooms for group meetings. A larger computer room that never has a class would also be fantastic. I apreciate the copy machines students are able to run for themselves, though I wish they had color capabilities. Increased art exibits might add flare and improve estetic qualities in the library. The enterance of the library, from the exterior, is not very inviting. The video collection is nice. Thank you for having this survey.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Library as Place
The library service is very good. The library building is univiting, the colors are annoying, carpet is nasty, and environment is does not make me want to spend much time there. I do enjoy the regular displays. However the interior is in serious need of makeover.
Senior (Year 4), Humanities, Library as Place
Less use by the homeless/indigent locals would be great. The smell can be overwhelming and uncomfortable and it takes away from students who need the resources (computers). Perhaps create a time (low traffic times) that they can come in a pick up their email.

I realized how much I appreciated HSU library services when I attended Tel Aviv University in Israel.HSU had current archaeological texts on archaeology in Israel, had good collection on books relating to my studies on the Dead Sea Scrolls, and carried Biblical Archaeology Review. The university of Tel Aviv did not nearly as much material as HSU. Also, I was spoiled by using fulltext data bases through the HSU library, and the university in Israel did not have access to these fulltext data bases. My academic life as a student at HSU was/is much easier for me thanks to the HSU library! Diane Harincar

You need to get some new chairs in the library for the study cubicle. I can not study in the library because the chairs are so bad so I just go home instead. There also needs to be an area with sound proof rooms like College of the Redwoods has for study groups wtih a white board, tables, and chairs.

I wish that the movies, videos could be checked out, by students and not just by faculty. I understand that students have had in the past the irresponsibility of probably losing them. I just think that for theatre, film and dance majors, it is a NECESSITY to watch the videos and check them out. Also, if the interlibrary loan documents on reserved books etc could be mailed more in a timely fashion, then that would serve greater purpose for students. I have received interlibrary loan documents on reserve but, received them when the date has already been expired. It did me no good to notify me because I didn't receive by mail in time to go check out the book. thanks for even having a survey!

I would like to see an expansion in contemporary sheet music collection. I'd love MORE STUDY ROOMS! Why have they been taken over for other things?! They are almost always full when students need them, like around midterms and finals. The chalkboards are so useful! Please do not delete them, increase them!

Please stop letting the transients come in! THere is nothing more disturbing to my comfort while I am in the Library than being forced to smell and be around one of these people. One man sat next to me the other day and scratched his crotch for ten minutes before I left. I have been harrassed and have known other females who have had similar experiences. I expect my Library to be safe and at least somewhat comfortable, but the presence of these people has turned me away from the library more than once. Thank you.

Our library is wonderful except for the fact that with some many books and so little student employees the books are often hard to find or mis-shelved. User services in the library are great. the major set backs of the library are: 1. the air condition which is stuffy and severely lacking fresh air accessibility. 2. comfortable seating, we need more places to study like the 2nd floor window areas. 3. the furniture on the third floor is very worn, chair seats totally degraded. 4. the computer systems in the library are consistanly slow and not dependable 5. the computer systems in the library are changed with out input from students.

Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
finding up to date, recent information in the library can be quite a challenge at times, sometimes finding a book post 1980 on desired subjects (usually sciences) is impossible. scientific journals have a decent availability, but seem to have a long absence period due to reshelving lag time. information on the third floor, government documents, humboldt room, etc... take a bit of training to be able to find, it seems a more user friendly method of accessing these things would be helpful. newspapers: finding recent (within the same week) issues of newspapers is often an incompletable task.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
I do not understand why the library is not open fri and sat evenings. There is really nowhere on a fri or sat night for someone to study in all of arcata. I also am very disappointed in the online search engines this library has. I am on exchange from Virginia Tech and there search engine are far superior and much easier to use and fine information so i KNOW there are better online facilities available. It seems like your library has alot of journals but its not easy to find articles.

I strongly encourage you to adapt the computer sytstem to include current students to avoid problems with registration stickers. I have had problems checking books out because I did not have my sticker. The library/university has my social security number everywhere in its data base, I have paid my tuition, I do not have late fees in the library, but I can not check a book out because I don't have a sticker. I find this lack of intercampus communication to be irritating and unprofessional. I hope that in the furture this problem can be avoided for the sake of other students.

My main complaint about the library is that I have difficulty finding a COMFORTABLE place to study for hours at a time. Every floor seems designed for people with no back problems, which I understand because most college students are young and can sit for hours in rigid chairs, but I happen to be an exception in that I am only 22 but had back surgery a few years ago and must continue to be extremely careful about prolonged periods of upright sitting. I do try to get up and take short walks to minimize my sitting time, but I still end up hurting my back from library chairs, which means I often have to give up and go home, where there are certainly more distractions but I can also be more comfortable while I study. Basically, I feel that the library does not accomodate me because I am a back pain sufferer, and I am sure I'm not the only one with this problem. The third floor couch was the only semi-comfortable spot in the library for me, but it was recently removed and now I am forced to sit in the cubicles or at a table. At the very least, I would GREATLY appreciate some chairs with solid back support instead of a cut-out back, so that the back pillow I carry with me wouldn't fall through the hole in the chair. Thanks-- no complaints with other aspects of the library!

There are three areas which need significant improvement a.s.a.p. 1)copy machine availability and service - more machines are needed, and a copy center employee needs to be on site during all library hours; 2)library hours should be extended, especially on Fri evenings and weekends; 3)a search engine that allows keyword searches of specific publications (journals) is badly needed. Thanks!
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
I want copy machines in 2nd floor to be more updated and usable because they are often unavailable. Also, I wish there are copy machines in 3rd floor. I like the CD reserves very much!
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Affect of Service
Overall, I believe we have above average services in the library. The employees are most often helpful and considerate.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Affect of Service
The librarians at the Humboldt State University library have always been extremely helpful and courteous.

i like how quickly the interlibrary loan service works, and how helpful the librarians are at the desk downstairs. i wish the interlibrary loan service was a little more extensive, but it's still really great, and it's super how you don't have to pay for it!
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
*Extended Library hours on sauturday and friday evenings would be helpful. *Enforce no cellular phones and talking in the quiet areas. *More group study rooms on the third floor, two rooms are not enough to meet student needs. *Do not allow homeless people to live and use the library as their personal home (ie. bathing in the restrooms, sleeping on the couches, etc.)
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
I use the library for study group sessions. I like that there are areas for silence and areas for quiet conversation. I am a math major and love the new white boards:)
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The digital lab is poor in every aspect of service, courtesy and knowledge. The help desk on the other hand is the most helpful and knowledgable in the library on more than just computers. The guy in the map area is really great and so are the 2 women at the info./reference desk. I feel, as I have for 3 years, that they are understaffed there. And the Humboldt Room hours are FAR too limited for student needs. All of which stems from the Dean of the library's lack, in many areas, of customer service and knowledge of library services and needs.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The copying services at the library are utterly inadequate. There are no color copiers, the business hours of the copy center are horrible and the copiers are old and are often broken down. There have been several times, when for some reason or another I have not been able to make the copies I need at the library and have had to check out books and haul them to kinkos.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
some of the services are difficult to figure out, but there are people there very willing to help make it easier for you, and once one learns the system there is an amazing amount of information available.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The Library needs to bring its collection up to date. There are far too many outdated and antiquated books on the shelves.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
The library is an inviting place, great pictures, and friendly atmosphere for learning and growing. One thing is a better childrens literature section. Another is that I really like the reading area on the second floor with the big windows, its great.

Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
I love that the library here at HSU, it is an inviting and a comfortable place to study. Sources of information are fairly easy to find and the service is good. The aspects that I feel need improvement are........ The photocopy machines need attention in the sense of being able to make two-sided copies and the lack of availability due to the need of servicing( i.e. paper jams, etc...) I am also very upset in the computer changes in the lab. No one asked the students if they wanted macs in the lab and the PC compatibilty is very SLOW, I used to always use this computer lab, now I have to go elsewhere.. I can not emphasize this point any more strongly, the macs are a dissappointment!

NEED MORE HOURS!!!! Not just during finals but late night hours all the time!
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Affect of Service
More hours Better treatment by student workers (staff is excellent) More group study areas
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
The one thing that would make the library a more inviting place to learn would be to include more mind invigorating art (murals in the stairwells, instead of just black numbers on white walls...) and maybe more furniture that doesn't smell like body odor. Besides that, of my 12 semesters at Humboldt, the library provided a good place to study and retrieve information.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
More complete collections of scientific journals would make research much easier. I really appreciate the access to computer workstations and unlimited use of printers.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
My biggest complaint is with a lack of recent books in sciences and health sciences etc. There is a fairly good selesction but it could be better. Of course, the library is not so big that it could house everything but...also, the journal subscriptions could be expanded-online or print. There are alot of neat chemistry journals like Free Radical Research and others that are needed by some students for research or personal interest! I am happy for the online journal subscriptions and databases though. That makes life alot easier!
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The library staff are great! They are knowledgeable and friendly! The facilities are in great need of improvement Library hours are not sufficient for my study needs. As a biology student and parent with a job, I frequently need to use the library research facilities and study areas between the hours of 6am and 7:30am on weekdays, between 7am and 11am on weekends and after 5:30pm on Saturdays. In addition, the loss of the copy center has greatly hindered my ability to complete assignements in a timely fashion. For example, I cannot get coppies made on campus after 5:30pm on weekends or before 1pm on sundays and after 4pm on saturdays and sundays. In addition the copy machines are constantly breaking. The journal collections are not that complete for science articles, but interlibrary loan makes up for that. Again, my biggest gripe are the meager weekend library hours
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
I know you are not our mothers and I know you are not responsible for disrespectful twits who leave their messes behind, but if desks and tables could be regularly cleaned, that'd be great! And as massive as the library is, I know it's got to be hard, but vaccuming more frequently might be good too. I know these tasks are very difficult when a place is always open, but a clean/tidy place to study would make it a better atmosphere.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Personnal Control
For such a small campus, I believe that this library is very well equiped to meet my needs and the needs of my fellow students. I am very satisfied with the service that I am given.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
just make it free to print if you swipe your student id and cost money if you don't have one at the printer on floor 1

i need/ would like to see more journals added to the collection. I would like more environmentally minded journals. i have lists that i would like to see in the library plus it would be very helpful to get more access to journals online possibly earlier versions than majority being 1995. sometimes for reserach i need journals dating back to 1980's thank you. everyone at the library is very kind also
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The library hours are not convenient. There are minimal book selections. Most of the books are very scientific we need variety. I cant find a decent poetry book. Get some new books. Make sure books are on shelf before mailing out an overdue this happened twice to me and the book was on the shelf. Its good to have a survey
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Affect of Service
The staff is condescending and grumpy. When I have a question they treat me as though I don't know anything and that I am a pain in the ass
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
there needs to be more rooms made available for group study. The library needs better ventilation, the air gets stale and stuffy. In a perfect world the library would also have much more natural light. The copiers always seem to be broken and VERY slowly repaired.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
I have found that the libraries biological journal collection doesn't meet my research needs. Some older issues reported to be in microfilm in catalyst do not exist in the collection. ILL requests take so long that by the time I finally get the article I no longer need it. The processing of converting teaching material to an electronic format is slow and my teachers do not have all of their original material for the class in time (photographic slides).
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
Interlibrary Loan has been great. Access to online scientific/math journals is poor (not user friendly or search friendly, few of them seem to work as described). SciDirect seems to be the only one that has worked for me. The online digital book collection that catalyst refers to is really lame; copywrite paranoia seems to have made it extreemly inconvenient to use.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
I find the stations for portable computers to be very helpful. If more of these stations could included power connections would also be helpful. Along with more stations or power connections at more work spaces in the library. I would also find it helpful if some how notebook user could either use wireless or wired access to the internet to allow them/me to be even more productive in the library. I personally do must of my homework on my notebook in the library between class and on my days I don't go to school.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The library should be open later on Fridays and earlier on Saturdays, maybe an hour or two.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
The library's service is satisfactory. Though, I think the library furnishings could stand to be replaced. Or, at the very least, steam cleaned well.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
University libraries should not clost at 5 pm Friday and Saturday. I understand the need for cutting cost, but many students work and this is the optimum study/research time, which is denied to them. Also, the Humboldt Room has some of the most inconvenient hours imaginable for a full time student trying to do research.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
I would like the weekend hours to be longer especially in the morning.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
Earlier morning hours would be nice, especially on the weekends, not everyone in Humboldt gets up at the crack of noon.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Personnal Control
The library is disgraceful, It feels dirty, the air is stale and a lot of the areas are loud, old unconformtable furniture on the 2nd nd third floor "quiet study" area. Windows half tinted?. Hours are ridiculous, should be open until 2am weeknights with 24 hour study area, and at least open for 12 hours a day on friday and saturday. The helpdesk is understaffed, staff doesn't look forward to helping me. Humboldt room needs to be open more, lots of plants through out the whole building, try and get a couple million and get a the library out of the 1970s. I am sure you are working hard with what resources you have, thanks for listening.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Personnal Control
I think the library staff is doing an excellent job, especially at the information/help desk on the first floor. Also, the electronic services available by the library do seem to be up to par, but could be extended considerably given today's technological means. Through my past five years at HSU, I have depended on the library often for a quiet and productive learning environment, and somewhat less often for a mechanism to facilitate research. It has done a great job towards these ends. Thank you, keep up the good work.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Personnal Control
Keep up the good work.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The hours are horrible. Needs to be open more like every other college library in America. The computer lab on the bottom floor is pretty awful. The MAC/PC situation doesn't work well. The percentage of MAC users on campus must be less the 5% so why are all the computer's MACs???
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Personnal Control
The inter-library loan form is not compatible with my computer at home, which uses internet explorer. I wish I could look up periodicals by author instead of title only, as in looking up a specific article. It would also be nice if the copy center was open later one day out of the week. I like how the library itself is open so late, however.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The two things in the library that need to be addressed the most are the computer labs and the "library use only" reserve items. The computer labs are supremely poorly maintained. I am an Apple technical specialist and I have been in charge of maintaining large campus computer labs before at the University of Washington. The large lab on the first floor is a perfect example. The application start times are horrible and the virus scan every time you insert a disk is both unnecessary and horrendously slow. None of this is helped by the rudest computer staff it has ever been my displeasure to encounter. While the computer labs probably don't fall directly under the purview of the library, as part of the library they reflect on the quality of the library. Further, unless books sleep, the "library use only" reserve policy should be changed. While I understand the philosophy behind always having certain reserve materials available while the library is open, this should be tempered with a willingness to make those materials of use. This could be best done by applying an overnight use policy to all reserve materials along with much higher late fines for those "red tape" reserve items.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The copy machines suck they are always messed up in one way or the other. You need to go back to the coins and have the cards an option. I hate trying to find references half the time the ones that I find on a search are not available or the ones that are, are not on the shelves and won't be for day even weeks. It is very frustrating.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
There are often times old stinky dready men sleeping, snoring, and stinking on the couches. They cough loudly. It will be nice when the construction stops. Many of the chairs need to be replaced by the second floor study cubicles. The employees are great. We could use more computers on the second floor, and more clocks on the walls throughout the whole building...but perhaps more interesting-looking ones, instead of the old black and white. The video selection is wonderful, but could always be larger...keep expanding! Overall, I am fairly pleased, but we could use many many many more periodicals on microfilm. Thanks for caring about our input!
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
Copy center usage is included in library resources to me and this semester the services are woefully negligent. Several times copiers have been down due to paper jams or just out of paper, a considerably easy fix, but because the copy center was not open nobody could fix the problem. Three times there was not a single copier in the library that was working properly. Since I live out of town this cuts into valuable time and resources to try to get copies of literature required for research.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Other
Current periodicals in many disciplines, as well as on-line access for research, are absolutely essential.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
If possible, it would be wonderful to have extended library hours...especially on weekends as well as opening earlier during the weekdays.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
My only complaint is that there is no monitored, absolutely quiet place to study. If students are studying quietly in an area, it's the library staff that is talking loudly, or laughing. If I need a quiet space, I must go home, but a lot of reference materials are not allowed to be taken out of the library. Friendliness is extremely high. Knowledgeable staff is extremely high. Overall, the library is good, just not quiet enough.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
Improving the air quality in the library would greatly help increase user satisfaction. It is difficult to spend long periods of time inside of the library presently.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
The library is not open long enough and needs more weekend and late night hours, not just during finals!
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
I do not enjoy physically being in the library. It is always stuffy and smells weird. I usually feel like throwing open the windows (which can't be done). I find myself envying the workers in the library whose offices are filled with plants and who have openable windows. I try to do most of my work remotely, and do not consider the library a good place to meet others to study or as a place of contemplation.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
I'd like to see fewer smelly homeless people and fewer lazy kids sleeping on the couches.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Affect of Service

Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Personnal Control
The library is my home away from home and I feel the library is excellent in many ways. I do feel that it could have more periodical titles available for the sciences.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
I like the way the library is structures with group learning space and quiet space. I think the regular reference staff is great and the student staff can be hit or miss.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Personnal Control
I spent 2 hours in the library trying to search for journal articles I needed without any luck. I went to the San Francisco Public library and fornd what I needed in 30 min. At times it is difficult to get workers in the library to acknowledge your there. When I get help the people are generally niceand the older workers seem to be more helpful.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Affect of Service
The librarians are fantastic but the student workers often are rude or don't wish to help. The peace of the library is often disrupted by students children running around or spilling food I would love to see more study rooms.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Library as Place
You guys need to clean up your chairs at library. They are nasty and dirty. It is not comfortable at all when I study at third floor.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
Our library employees are incredible. They are very willing to help and take the time to explain how things work. The main thing that I think could be done to make the library better is to have expanded access to electronic and print scientific journals. It would be great if the access we had could expand beyond the library and into the campus computer labs as well.
Senior (Year 4), Science / Math, Access to Information
Need more people that actually know how to help in the computer lab.

The only problem i've run across is finding help in the computer lab. You can't exactly run next door if you have a question or you'll end up fighting someone for your seat. The one time I did get help though the guy who assisted me was very helpful. One last thing, I love that there's so many couches!!!!!!

the construction outside the library is too damned loud! how can one expect to go to a "quiet place" to do work when there are jack hammers, bucket loaders, construction workers, etc. pounding away at all hours...also, the library needs to be open longer more often...especially on sundays!
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Personnal Control
The organization of the books is very confusing- with the Dewey Decimal system I know where things are whereas with the present system the books are confusing and hard to find. When I need to find something my search is not for a specific book but an article or play that is in a few books, and in the Dewey system I could go to the section where the thing I need id and find a compilation, rather than having to find a specific book. Also when looking things up on the on-line catalogue the availablility is never updated- so I will search for a book that is checked out- which leads me to believ that a book that is "out" may be in.
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Personnal Control
service is great. ambiance is mediocre. the air is worse than on an airplane. lighting is dull and dingy. full spectrum lights and a solarium would be very helpful. Journals are not as accesable as I would like. the indexing is not very user friendly when one is not familiar with the titles of publications. i would also like to know what the purpose of such an unusual survey format is (I do not feel that i made optimal use of the survey because I did not understand how it was to be interpreted).
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
I wish our library were larger and that we had research assistants. Hours of the humboldt room, the copy center, and sometime even the librarians make them avaliable during the work hours of the days. Unfortunatly i rarely have time to visit the library from 8-5, seeing as i am in class or working during those hours.
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Affect of Service
The library is pretty sad. All in all, I'm very dissatisfied with the quality of customer service I recieve at the library. The employees seem to be there only for a pay check.
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
In my opinion, after 4 years at HSU, the library has done little to make improvements. Large amounts of space are wasted and students do not use many sections of the library that could be better put to use. We need more computers in the library. I do find most of the books I need but the periodicals are still difficult to navigate through and the periodical help office is not helpful. Thanks!
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
Many of the books are really old! Is there any chance of getting some updated information?
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Affect of Service
I think the staff at the library is great, and they always answer any questions that I have. The library is a huge source to access research, and the campus would be lost without it.

Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Affect of Service
I find the construction out side to be a detourant for study purposes. Other than that aspect, I love using the library, there are quite spaces and social areas, as well. The information in the Humboldt Room is the only room that I seem to need information from and it becomes tiresome to continually have to zerox the pages that I need, but I am assured that the safety of this material is essential. I have been to many other universities and I would have to say that this library is the "friendliest" of them all!

the library needs to be remodeled desperately. it feels disgusting to be in there and the paintgs are sick. it should be more professional, feel brighter and not so dingy and depressing. i have visited several other campuses and seen their facilities and i feel that many people would benefit from a library that feels good to be in.
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Library as Place
The library should be a quite place for study. There are many students who do not honor this. I often find myself asking other people to be quite. I get easily distracted when large groups of people are talking in the library. I go to the library because I do not have a quiet place to study at home. Student need to realize that the library is a place for quiet study. Groups that need to discuss their projects need to get a room in the library to collaborate in...not the tables in the 2nd floor!

Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
I do not like the new computers in the library at all. I am at school so that I can learn skills to get a job. The vast majority of business uses PC's, yet the computer labs are Mac's. I find the arugment that the Mac's are okay because they have a PC platform to be flawed because when users use the PC mode it slows the computers down so much it is ridiculas. Frankly, I would be happy if the library brought back some of the older PC's instead of the new Mac's. I would like to see the library open later on Fridays and Saturdays.
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Library as Place
Quiet areas need expanding, and the existing areas' quiet must be enforced...construction makes it impossible to study, sleep, relax...couches on second floor MUST be cleaned more regularly as they accumulate the smells of their vast amount of users. Great hours, great service, great resources, but the environment needs some work. Thank you.

Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
My only complaints about the library facilities, are that there are not enough computers available and I don't like that all of the computers available are Mac's. I think the library should have at least one computer lab of IBMs. Also, the library opens kind of late on the weekends. Thanks!
Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology, Access to Information
The library's microfilm viewers are archaic, and frequently out of service. The periodicals office should be located near the microfilms and other periodicals (perhaps in the rooms now occupied by the copy center), so that students who require assistance can get the help they need and deserve. Barring that, a sign should at least be posted to tell people where they can go to get help with microfilms and other periodicals. Students ought to be permitted to check audiovisual materials out of the library, even if it were just a limited checkout of a few days. Videocassets are actually a less valuable resource than most books, so the double standard doesn't make sense. If instructors sometimes need the videos for classroom presentations, they can always put a hold on them. The lighting in the general-interest magazine area is way too dim to permit safe or healthy reading. Loud, boistrous conversation is sometimes emitted from the librarians' offices on the upper floors. Perhaps someone needs to tell them, "quiet! This is a library!"

I think the online library services are lacking, not very user friendly, slightly confusing with the use of made up words where they can not be defined in a dictionary and few people if any know what they mean. I would like to see a simple index that works and takes me where I want to go and not ambiguous gibrish. The library search thing is very UN-effective. I could type in Zebra and there might be one thing for Zebra, the rest is about Expanded Geometric Inductions. I really don't care about all the other stuff, just tell me if there is anything regarding what I was looking up. I also don't like the whole bit about needing a library card so we can use the number on the back to gain access to internet library information. The truth is, I am about to graduate, in May, and I have only entered the library twice. Those two trips were not to check out books either. I am graduating having never received my id card too. 4 years? I haven't missed a thing either. I resent the fact every time I went to get my card the person was gone, sick, on vacation, or asked me to come back another time. I have a life too with deadlines even, and a job, and friends and stuff, lots of stuff. I don't like the library much and I like the online information even less. Not easily accessible, even with a school card. The info is WAY lacking and the search engine dealy stinks. I don't like surveys.
Senior (Year 4), Other, Access to Information
I did a search for some books at the library back at the beginning of February and I still have not received any information back on those books. This kind of service is unacceptible.
Senior (Year 4), Other, Affect of Service
The women at the information desk are never happy to help, and when they do help, they make too many assuptions about what I know and they are very vague in their answers. Also, if I act like I do not know what they are talking about, they treat me like I am stupid. I now never go to the information desk and think there are many resources I am not aware of or do not know how to use in the library because of the bad attitude of the workers who are supposed to be helpful in this area.

The staff in the copy room is rude and does not appear to want to work, also the hours are very unconvienant. Also to many books are located only in the Humboldt Room and I beleive they should be placed for general check out.
Senior (Year 4), Other, Access to Information
Dissatisfied with the Reserve items policy and access. Overnight checkout should be commonplace, reserve materials should be scanned into a database for electronic retrieval, and videos should be available for removal from library. In addition, library hours should be extended (especially since some institutions even have 24 hour library access and HSU is not even close).

I have no complaints about the library.

I find the elibrary extremely useful. I do wish that the archives went further back and there was more of a selection. I am very pleased with the information I have been able to obtain through the school library. The hours are generous, the staff is courteous, and there is always a quiet place to study.
Senior (Year 4), Other, Access to Information
material incomplete - the course on internet resourcees is good, but could be better - take longer - updates
Senior (Year 4), Other, Affect of Service
This library is great, it provides very good service and all employees do an excellent job helping me as a student. Like everone else though more computers would help, or just better monitoring of who is using them. i have seen many non-students using this facility.

This HSU library is wonderful.
Senior (Year 4), Other, Access to Information
-most of the employees are very helpful -the copy center's hours are horrible -i would like to see more recent books in the travel section
Senior (Year 4), Other, Access to Information
While the library provides extensive resources on some subjects, others, especially anthropology, are signifigantly limited. It would be excellent to subscribe to current journals in anthropology and bulk up other print resources. I have been frustrated with this issue as an anthropology major for four years here at Humboldt.
Senior (Year 4), Other, Access to Information
There should be a section of the library open 24 hours a day, especially during finals week. Allowing a place where students can go all the time to do work.
Senior (Year 4), Other, Access to Information
There needs to be a broader range of information with easier access, especially in the area of ethnobotany or economic botany.
