Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

I wish the library hours would be extended on friday and saturday evenings.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Communications / Journalism

there arent enough books that i can flip through to decide which ones i want to take home

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Health Sciences

It is inconvenient that it closes so early on Saturdays.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Performing & Fine Arts

later hours would be helpfull

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math

I love the DLC because i can go there to make some presentations on power point, learn photoshop, make transparencies. I would like the library to have more rooms to check out for group study sessions.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math

Your buisness hours during holidays are too few, I often stay during holidays and I find that the times I wish to use the library do not corespond with the business hours.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math

I would like the library to stay open later on Friday and Saturday night.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Science / Math

The library must be open longer in the evenings, especially on a college campus where nights are the only times that people can get there. Being closed at five thirty on a friday night is unacceptable.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Social Sciences / Psychology

More avaiblity of the Humboldt room and its resorces

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Undecided

I wish that the library had more of the recent books that are being published, mainly fiction. And also more copies of books.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Undecided

I love that the computers are all new. You can find anything you need at the library, but i hate the book stacks. i can never find anything there.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Undecided

I think that Humboldt's library is small, and has a pretty small selection of books (compared to other Universities) and some ugly seventies styling. It is functional though. We have up to date technology and although I have never taken advantage of it the digital learning center seems like an exalent resource. I think that we could use a larger computer lab and more computer terminals to access personal e-mail, not just the library catalog. Personaly a great library is one that has a great selection of titles, government documents that are easily accesable, staff that are helpfull and avaible (especialy in the book stacks), has technology avaible to its users and provides a quiet, calm, creative space in which to learn, study, and reflect. P.S. Sorry about the creative spelling.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Undecided

the copy center is something I know students are always wondering on their hours. the hours really don't mixes with the students needs. extend or make hours in the afternoons and/or the weekends also. another thing is a catalog list of the entire CD/phonorecords would be nice.

Undergraduate, Freshman (Year 1), Other

I don't really interact with the staff, however when I went with my class Linda, I don't know her last name I believe it starts with a B and she knows about Kinesiology, was a very nice lady. She was very helpful and also appologetic that the library did not carry any journals that related directly to Physical Therapy. Maybe you guys should consider prescribing to one. Everyone I have come in contact have been really nice. The candy dish near the ID card replacement room had the best Lemonhead I ever had in my life!!! Thanks

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

I have found the library staff to be helpful, most of the time. I would only suggest further organization of the reserve desk. Another problem I have encountered is a continual abscence of books. Many times when conducting research and compiling a list of call numbers from the library's site, only half of the books are on the shelf. Perhaps additional employees would aid in the turn around time for re-shelfing books. Overall I am very pleased with HSU's library. I especially like the second floor couch area near the children's section. Thanks for caring.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

I think the libraries internet page and all the search tools that it has to offer is the best thing. I'm not on to try and dig through books and some times don't have the time but the web page helps out a great deal for those late night paper or study sessions! THANKS GUYS!

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Communications / Journalism

please continue to offer the course on the library info and database its awesome

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Education

the library is a very good sorce that us college students have and i am happy that i finally discovered it. you all shoould promote it more to incoming freshmen.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Engineering / Computer Science

please extend library hours on fridays and weekends

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Engineering / Computer Science

As a whole I am satisfied with the library services. It would be nice if all of the electronic resources, databases, etc. could be utilized from other locations such as at home for authorized users. Also, some of the student employees should receive more technical training and some customer service training.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Engineering / Computer Science

With the information age it would ne nice to have longer hours at either the library or computer labs. I personally feel that at least one lab (Gist 218) should be open all night. There is a rush to get work done during the day and some people, myself included, find it less stressful to study and work on computers in the evening/night. Thanks!

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), General Studies

People need to be available during all business hours to assist students with questions they might have (especially with microfilm/fiche). Signs and more efficient labeling of resources would be extremely beneficial to students trying to find information without having to ask for help. Possibly a directory in the lobby with a building floorplan and where to find certain items,i.e. journals, periodicals, microfilm, etc. then have a localized directory or directories on each floor.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities

Reshelving should be quicker. The tours should take you in to the computer labs.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities

You need to stay open later at night, this is a university library for goodness sakes and students need a place where they can go to study at night that's quite and promotes learning. They may not have this at home. Of the subjects most commonly cheched out more often more books should be purchased. And of the subjects that havent been checked out since the 70's those books should be gone through and gotten rid of.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Humanities

hours when open need to be changed.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Law

We need more books and more help, than just one person at the help desk.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math

I would like to see the scientific research databases streamlined, as well as more subscription to scientific journals.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math

later hours, cafe or coffe bar inside would be nice, more take home resourses like movies

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math

I usually come to the library to study, sometimes to do research. When it comes to research, I am satisfied with the resources and the convenience of accessing them. When it comes to the library hours, I am not. Appearantly, I am the only one who studies on Friday and Saturday nights, because the library is not open past 5:45 pm on these nights. My home is not a good study environment, so I study at the library, very often past 6:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. I am incredibly dissapointed in the services of the library regarding this issue as I am sure others are as well.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Science / Math

later hours on sunday

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology

Maybe there could be some kind of directions (or better ones) in how to find research on different subject or for using the advanced search.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Social Sciences / Psychology

I find it ridiculous that in the Humboldt Room you have collections of books where there is more than one copy but the extras are not allowed to be checked out of the room for overnight study, etc.. Furthermore, upon asking questions of employees, most don't know anything and one administrative female did not listen to the question presented and placed a value judgment on what was asked so that I never got the answer, I was instead faced with prejudice. Perhaps she forgot her medicine that day. It was extremely rude.

Undergraduate, Sophomore (Year 2), Other

I feel the staff and librarians are very helpful. I think the catalyst could be made easier to use. Also I think movies should be made available for overnight checkout to students.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

I would like the library to stay open later on fri and sat

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

The staff is great when you can find them! Maybe put more computer helpers in the lab for times when the printer isn't working, you can't find your file, etc.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

I don't like the way the electronic catolog is set up it is very confusing to me. Also their is not a very good section on Enviromental Science topics the books are all outdated and full of useless information.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

Copying prices are expensive, but the computer services can not be beaten......

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Business

I think the HSU library is average. There is a lot of older information, doesn't seem to contain as many new and different books and resources. I have asked for help from the library information desk and hardly been helped at all. Rather than help, the woman behind the desk just spurted out that they didn't have any information on what I was looking for and suggested I try renting a video on the subject. The subject I was searching for information on was "Divorce", how can there be no information on Divorce in a library. On the other hand, I have received fabulous help while in the computer labs and I use them on a daily basis. If and when I do have problems the staff in the lab is great. They are patient and attentive, and always have an answer to my questions. Thank you for taking the time to read my response.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Communications / Journalism

In general the HSU library is great considering the size of the University. My only MAJOR complaint is the library's hours. How do you justify closing a library at 10:45 on a Sunday night????? This is a complaint that is not only uttered by me but by many of my peers who I know won't take the time to answer this survey. But please, do not sacrifice your great customer service to fulfill this request. It is only a suggestion. You guys are great to take the time to ask our opinions. Thanks. -Chris

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Education

I would like to see easier acess to reserve items...

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Education

New copy machines/ New couches needed

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Education

i would appreciate longer hours on Fridays. otherwise, I am very happy with our library on campus!

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Education

The service, with only one exception (and I think that was a student) has been excellent. However, finding books through the jungle of computerized data bases takes dedication, fortitude and a trust in a higher being. Also, diversification is lacking. Recently I tried to find books written by Palistinian authors and found none (0) other than a children's picture book co-written by an Israeli and a Palistinian.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Education

Access to card catologs should be made avail.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Education

The woman at the information desk with the accent is great and is always helpful. She is very nice. And the copy machines should be checked more often for problems.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science

It would be nice to have longer weekend and Friday hours. When you have projects due, weekends are prime dates to meet out of class and, research still has to be done when the library closes, and we are out of luck until the next day. I would like to be able to work for more than 6 hours on Saturday. Like wise with Friday. If you are in class all day, it does not leave very much time to get work done.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science

A lot of your books are out dated. Many of the books I have checked out are from the '70's. CCAT has a better selection of up to date books on energy etc. You should get Home Power magazine, and more "guy" periodicals, you have Rosie, ms., Vogue, etc. but no car mags, surfing mags, etc. The one guitar magazine is for classical players only and probably read by only a handfull of people, guitar player magazine would serve more people and be more usefull.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science

more hours would be a plus. beter air quality in the computer room. and more PCs

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science

I find the library services as complete as can be expected with the ever changing rate at which information is availble(Internet etc.).

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Engineering / Computer Science

It would be more convienient if the Library had longer buisness hours on Saterday and Sunday and closed later on the weekdays. Sometimes I need to study later than the library is open. I love the videos that the library contains on variety of subjects. It helps me learn in anima when I need something different from reading text books. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I have always been satisfied with the help I get.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), General Studies

longer hours on the weekends and do all of my homework.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Health Sciences

It would be nice to have a service where you could schedual an appointment for a private tour and instruction on library services, especialy for the data base. Also there is one librarian, female, with longer redish brown hair who is always extreamly load when she talks; this is very disruptive.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Health Sciences

I feel that they should have longer hours, and a larger building to further their collection of books and sources.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Humanities

In general I am satisfied with the library's services but I don't see too many on staff at the information desk and that's where I need most of my help. The staff at the front desk are efficient and friendly.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Humanities

Your hours suck. You need to be open later, students are often up late studying. Your hours especially suck on Fri and Sat, you need to be open longer on those days.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Humanities

1.The copy center hours are not adaquate- they should be open longer hours including evenings. 2. There should be more staff there in the library on weekends to help answer students questions and help them with research- I find that most students I know use the library mainly on weekends and in the evenings. 3. There needs to be an easier way to find artricles in the microfilm drawers. I found no binder or anything listing what information was in what drawer. I had to manually open each drawer inorder to find the one that had the articles (new york times) that i needed.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Law

the library needs to be open more and there needs to be more artwork and creative things to make us want to stay there more often

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Performing & Fine Arts

there should be vending machines, a better or more efficient way to search for things like books, music, etc, the computers become too limiting

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Performing & Fine Arts

The web site is confusing and hard to use. Also, the Library need a bigger link designation on Humboldt's home page.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Performing & Fine Arts

Later hours during mid-terms would be appreciated.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Performing & Fine Arts

Reserve materials and compact disc collection should be more organized. Employees have sent me away saying that they were unable to locate materials, but were able to find them when I asked them to look again.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Performing & Fine Arts

on the website please categorize cd's according to genre: r&b, blues, etc. please think about staying open at least 1 hr later on friday and saturday nights.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

I have attended a number of universities, and this school has an excellent library with a very helpful staff. The only improvement that I would like to see is having later hours on Friday night (which I understand is difficult). I do not like the fact that the library is closed at 5:45 on Fridays because it the only time I have to study on weekends due to work. You guys do a great job!

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

I really don't like that the library doesn't open until 11am on Saturday. I like studying in the morning and I find the library a productive place to study. I also wish the library was open later on Saturday evenings too. Oh, and the keyboards for the internet access computers on the first floor really suck!

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

not enough journal titles. Current journals in primatology much needed.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

the computer help desk is very helpfull, and the study areas are quiet and clean. It would seem that the book selection is outdated in some of the sciences. More current works could be added, outdated books could be retired. Science information is always changing, and a school with an elite statas such as ours, should have oceanography books which date in the nineties. Any science book pubished and not revised resently is almost a waste of space.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

I think that the libary should be open more. When I have 8am classes and a test in the morning it would be nice to come to the libary to study in the morning for more than a half an hour. Later hours would be good too, unitll like 1am.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

I feel the library could be expanded to allow more resources that other schools have, as well as some layman books

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

The digital literacy lab does not have adequate hours available to students. Minitab was not installed in the computers, and it was supposed to be there. I reported it to the helpdesk 4 times over a two month period. It took months to fix it. This was an important tool to be used by biometry students. This posed a great hinderance to myself and other biometry students. Some people at the help desk act like its a pain to get up and assist some students with computer problems. Overall, the library staff is friendly, especially at the circulation desk. The website and oncores is a great resource. Library hours should be more consistent.....should close at eleven on Sundays, and it should be open later on Fri and Sat for those students who are not party animals. The copiers on the second floor are crap...I've had constant problems using them, the machines take money and do not provide a copy. This has happened three times, and when I called the copy center for help (as the sign says above the machine) I got a recording. This is no help, and it has happened repeatedly. So, I do my copying at Kinko's, where there is always someone to offer assistance. I have had to pay 10 cents for copies, instead of the 8 cent rate when using HSU card because my wallet was stolen. Copies with or without the card should be 8 cents, so students aren't getting ripped off. It's cheaper at Kinko's.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

Most people don't use or purchase Mac computers, and it makes it difficult when you switch all of the lab's over to Macs, leaving no option for the PC user but to learn new ways. As a math major, I often need to make graphs and learning how to use Macs is so time consuming when the homework takes long enough. Are they super cheap or something?

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

My biggest flustration with the library is the overall condition of the research journal section. I know that they are used frequently, therefore they need to be addressed at least twice daily. Too many journals are scattered all over the library for days at a time. I dropped of a journal one am and it took 48 hours for it to make it back to the shelf. Please address this!!!! Also, I would like to make a note about the copy machine system. As many copies as students make it is disappointing to be charged 8 cents a copy. Really 4-5 cents is more than enough.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

It would be nice o have longer library hours on the weekends and some holidays like Cezar Chavez. More air circulation would be great.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

I would like to see better photocopiers that work, and more computers for work.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Science / Math

it would be great if there were scanners available here.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

I believe the employees are polite and approachable, yet some have no clue how to use the library. The amount of material available is excellent, especially the print media (like newspapers and magazines). Some books are outdated, but usually I can find material that is modern. The only complaint I have is that the environment is not as comfortable as I'd like it to be (IE. dim lighting, uncomfortable chairs and sometimes it is too cold).

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

I wish there were more readily accessable resources, books, journals and articles available at HSU. I wish there were more easy instructions available like OWL, which is great. I wish there was more computers and resources searches. I really appreciate all the help from the library, I have never had a porblem and everyone was always very nice, friendly and curtious.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

I would be happier if the book sections were paid more attention to. It is sometimes frustrating when I need a book that is "not checked out", and yet I am still not able to find it.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

It seems that even though the library computer labs have been updated, they still have extreem difficulties in crashing over and over. Also many times the computers are unable to switch from Mac to PC... This has happened to me on various occasions and from numerous computers...

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

The print collectioon has many gaps. In my primary are of focus the lbrary's books are few (I could cary all the material with one hand) out of date and barely on topic. My personal collection is better than whats available in the entire library on the topic.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

More weekend hours.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

Pretty good. Have had problems with Library personnel closing down the labs before the time posted. It was very inconvienent but otherwise was okay.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

I think that if you are going to allow Grad students to check out books for three months, there should be more than one copy of the book before they are allowed to carry out that policy.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

The facilities would be conducive to learning if the resources were current and the staff were willing to help students find less popular items.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Social Sciences / Psychology

I believe that the staff in the library are very helpfull and friendly. However, there is a need for newer books, and easier way to locate journal articles through the electronic catalog.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Undecided

Library should be open 24 hours. New furniture and carpet would help a lot.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Other

Over all I'm pleased with the level of service I recieve from the HSU library. There's always room for improvement but with the budget HSU has I'm happy with what I have.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Other

Closing on Friday and Saturday? Those are the two designated days/hours used as catch up hours and the library is closed. Put down the bong and think about it.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Other

the library information desk is not open enough. also the hours on friday should be extended, some people are studeous for longer than 6:00pm. The lighting in some areas in very poor, the chairs and couches have bad odor and the pressure in the library is unsettling.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Other

myonly proble is with the coy machines breaking down

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Other

Either extend copy center hours or get rid of it. It is a tease to have it open 12-4.

Undergraduate, Junior (Year 3), Other

There should be more staff to help in the computer rooms and information desk. Also the hours on Friday and Saturday should be extended. For some students the library is the only place we can actually study. On the weekends there is no place to go to study.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

a video collection in circulation would be a nice addition.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

The library is helpful to me in many respects as I've indicated in my responses above. I think the library would be more beneficial to me if greater emphasis were placed on quiet study areas, dedicated group-study rooms, and extended (later) operating hours. The library staff are generally quite helpful and the resource base that the library provides is good. I do feel, however, that the library's exclusive use of Apple computers is of a significant hindrance to its computing resources. While emulation software allows these computers to run PC programs, they generally do not perform well in this respect and subsequently limit the computing resources available to the end user. I don't think that the library's computing resources should be comprised exclusively of Apple computers but feel that a mixture of both PC's and Apple computers would be most beneficial to users. Thank you.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

On Saturday, April 13, 2002, I visited the library to make copies of an article on reserve. Every copy machine on the second floor was out of order, either because it was broken or it was out of paper. When I tried to use the one copy machine on the first floor, I was able to copy three pages before it too ran out of paper. I informed the guy at the circulation desk of the problem and he said that they didn't service the copy machines and the copy center was closed. I asked if I could go to Seiman's Hall to make my copies, but he said no, I could not leave the library with the reserve item that I needed to copy. Eventually another guy came to my rescue and fixed the copy machine on the first floor. The machines on the second floor remained out of service. This is not the only time that something like this has happened to me at the library. There must be some way for the library to maintain the integrity of the copy machines. Thank you for hearing my pain.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

The people who work at the front desk, the computer help desk, and in reference are very nice and helpful, but it's frequently really hard to find someone at the information desk. This makes it difficult to answer questions about library services.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

The biggest problem I have had using the library is after having found books/journals etc. in Catalyst that were listed as not checked out, often they were nowhere to be found in the stacks.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

Wonderful staff. Only suggestion is to provide a display map in the entrance area

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

There is a strong need for Students to gain access to Journal titles that need to be ordered. Either sent to home, or for pick up at the library. Also online journals and news in print online would be very useful to students. Also the website for the library needs captions under the topics to be selected. Not everyone knows that journal titles can be found under the periodicles and not the catylist.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

It would bw nice to have trained staff who know how to research for apecific school project like wildlife lifetable projects, Permaculture anything really. Maybe expert students who are from a variety of popular majors and programs on campus who are available to students to use as a resource for our specific projects. It may not be feasable but librarians don't always know what we are talking about and it would make it easier for students to really get good information and find help for projects. Maybe even a partnership with the tutoring center or something? But over all a good job and friendly professional staff, the students are a bit lacluster at times but I know where they are comming from.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

The only problem I have with the library are out of date books. I am constantly working research projects and there are rarely enough books for me to referance that have current data. Most books are older than me!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

The main floor is always noisy. I do not care for the online journal subscriptions. It is difficult to preview articles.I would prefer to have access to complete print collections of scientific journals. On the positive side, the library staff is friendly and knowledgable.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

I am dissatisfied with the library hours in the early morning. I would like to see the library open earlier than the current hours. blm12@humboldt.edu

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

Good collection of progressive scientific journals - could use more. Excellent CD collection. Get some real PC computers, not wishy-washy PowerPC's.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Agriculture / Environmental Studies

In general our library is very good. For comfort, please bring back the couches to the walls around the stacks (for some, the library is the only place on campus to catch a quick nap between classes and the first floor is too noisy for this). Also, why does Humboldt Room have such restricted hours? Why not the same as the rest of the library?

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Business

HSU needs to have a librarian on duty later than the hours currently scheduled.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Business

they do not enough resources and equipment(computers, zerxox machines, enough knowledgeable employees working at the same time,etc..behind ) for students who need them to complete course work and can't otherwise afford them. I feel our library is sadly behind the times with referances and technology.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Business

It would help if staff were a little more up to date on research techniques

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Business

I would like to see free copies in ALL areas of the Library. Also I think it should be open 24 hours a day 7 days a week with minimal staff in the evenings.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Business

I would love to see the library open earlier on the weekends, it does not open until 11am and I think that is too late. It would be nice if they could open it at 10am and have computer access open at that time too. Sometimes it is way too warm in the library which is a major deterrent for me using it. Please look in to more ventilation or use the heater less. More clearly define areas for "group study" i.e. louder areas, it is distracting to be in a "quiet area" and have large groups being noisy.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Business

The hours on the copy room should be increased. Needs to be open earlier in the morning.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Business

No more classes in computer lab. Longer business hours in copy center. Refill staplers every where all the time! Copiers need more attention for all of them to function all of the time. Tell study groups to find a room to chat loudly in instead of out in the open on the first floor. But every thing else is great, thanks for asking.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Communications / Journalism

The library needs a larger "digital literacy closet" for people to need help learning the computer equipment--individual attention.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Communications / Journalism

The library should be open for longer hours on Friday and Saturday. I get very irritated when I really don't have the library to go to on an occasional Friday night when homework must be done. I also don't appreciate having to leave the library early evening on Saturday. Usually, going to the library is an all afternoon/evening experience. I know others feel the same way. It seems that the library should be an available service and resource even on a Friday or Saturday night when we should be out relaxing and having fun! But alas, we're here to be students, and sometimes the only true quiet I can get is at the library. Otherwise, keep up the good work!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Communications / Journalism

The library book return box is closed to those students wanting to turn in "due" books at the circle. There is no parking available to run to the front of the library to return a book. This results in renewing a book not needed by me that might be useful to someone else. Also, there needs to be a walk-around monitor to quiet those folks with no manners for library policy. I go there to read and loud visiting is disturbing. Thank you. This survey was a good idea.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Education

In my five years as a student here I have been quite satisfied with the resources available at our library. The staff are friendly and consistent. I would like to see more computers in the actual library, more hours with qualified staff at the help desk, and a more complete selection of journals and periodicals.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Education

your children's literature collection is very frustrating--almost any book pulled off the shelf appears as though it will fall apart in my hands. there have been chapter books written for children since the '70's, but you wouldn't know it looking for them in our library.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Education

It would be nice to have more modern texts and facilities in the library as well as more inviting study areas with comortable furnature.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Education

The library is an attractive and comfortable place to study, but I wish that the overall colection of materials was much more extensive. Research is often limited by lack of newer more up to date materials. The internet has its place, but it does not replace copies of journals, scientific studies, when intensive research is needed for a project.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Education

The hours of the library need to be changed so that students can access it during non-working hours as well as school hours. The library connection over the Internet still needs to be better.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Education

I think that the people on staff are very friendly; there just are not enough of them. Some online research instructions would be helpful if more people cannot be hired. My biggest problem with library services occured in the summer sessions. If the university is offering summer sessions, then the library needs to support those students. The summer sesson hours were grossly insufficient.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science

It is frustrating that your hours on friday and saturday are so short. It is also frustrating that you allow grad students as well as professors to check out books for the duration of the semester, even with the option to place a hold on it. Perhaps you should look at those books that are checked out most frequently for the semester and stock an extra copy.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science

I feel all the librarians and staff are doing a great job. One thing I would like to point out is the hours the library is opened on friday and saterday are terrible!! Closing at 6pm on friday and 5pm on saterday really effects me, the prime time for me to study at times is on a friday or saterday night and the fact that the library is closed then has been extreamly frustrating to me. Is it possible to extend these hours????

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science

towards the end of the semester, the hours should be longer, especially on weekends

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science

Need for new books on more subjects

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Engineering / Computer Science

We Need access to the whole ACM Digital Library

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), General Studies

Overall, the HSU library is good, and the upgrade to the computer interface and database access greatly improved remote access (a feature I appreciate.) I would suggest that accomodations be made for parent-students who may need to utilize the library with their children (this is also a campus-wide issue, I believe.) The face of the student population is changing, and students who are parents need to be taken into consideration. To the extent that students eat, talk, and otherwise use the library in "non-traditional" ways, so should parents be extended the same leniency (i.e., children in computer labs, etc.) Perhaps a designated area, so as not to offend other users, who might take exception to the presence of children?

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Health Sciences

YOu should have a list of all of the CDs avaliable on the web

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Health Sciences

The only problem that I have with the library is when requesting an article through interlibrary loan from home the process is too ong and drawn out. The windows close making it difficult to continue requesting various articles.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Health Sciences

Journals for nursing students need to be current, not over five years old.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

the collection is weak in many areas, and many of us would like the library to be available friday and saturday nights!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

There should be more international magazines and newspapers.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

This particular library has a problem with the one change machine, which doesn't work sometimes. Often times, when the Library is open late, noting else is on campus...maybe there could be a seperate snack room where people could get food and coffee, or change while in the building.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

the library staff has been excellect every time I have needed them. I think our library's problem is that we need more resources i.e. books, journal collections, etc. as well as a larger space an entire wing or floor dedicated to study groups and people who need to talk would be good, but that requires money that we probably dont have.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

I am very happy with the size of our library relative to the number of students we have. I do wish that we had more non-english language books, however, I do enjoy the ones we currently have. A Mayan- English dictionary would be wonerful.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

Consider a 24 hour a day library schedule.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

online access is VERY important

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

I would like to see more Atlas's that can be checked out and more couches would be convienent.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

I realized how much I appreciated HSU library services when I attended Tel Aviv University in Israel.HSU had current archaeological texts on archaeology in Israel, had good collection on books relating to my studies on the Dead Sea Scrolls, and carried Biblical Archaeology Review. The university of Tel Aviv did not nearly as much material as HSU. Also, I was spoiled by using fulltext data bases through the HSU library, and the university in Israel did not have access to these fulltext data bases. My academic life as a student at HSU was/is much easier for me thanks to the HSU library! Diane Harincar

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Humanities

I like this library a lot. I wish it were open for the extended hours everyday. I have only had a couple of problems: books I want being lost and one employee telling me he didn't know how to look up the LP listing and instead of finding out he told me to go ask someone else.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Performing & Fine Arts

I would like to see the classical CD collection much larger.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Performing & Fine Arts

I would like to see a more diverse collection of works. Possibly more recent or current publications by people of color.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Performing & Fine Arts

You need to get some new chairs in the library for the study cubicle. I can not study in the library because the chairs are so bad so I just go home instead. There also needs to be an area with sound proof rooms like College of the Redwoods has for study groups wtih a white board, tables, and chairs.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Performing & Fine Arts

Our library is wonderful except for the fact that with some many books and so little student employees the books are often hard to find or mis-shelved. I know they are doing their best with shelf-reading and shelving, but it can use improvment. also having newer books in many of the feilds would be much appreciated. thank you for all the hard work so far.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Performing & Fine Arts

I wish that the movies, videos could be checked out, by students and not just by faculty. I understand that students have had in the past the irresponsibility of probably losing them. I just think that for theatre, film and dance majors, it is a NECESSITY to watch the videos and check them out. Also, if the interlibrary loan documents on reserved books etc could be mailed more in a timely fashion, then that would serve greater purpose for students. I have received interlibrary loan documents on reserve but, received them when the date has already been expired. It did me no good to notify me because I didn't receive by mail in time to go check out the book. thanks for even having a survey!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Performing & Fine Arts

More hours would be nice, especially on the weekend mornings, nights, holidays and breaks.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Performing & Fine Arts

more open hours to the library on weekends and Fridays would help a lot, since we can be very busy with classes during the week and are unable to go to the library during the week. This can be very important as we work on research papers on weekends more.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Earlier morning hours would be nice, especially on the weekends, not everyone in Humboldt gets up at the crack of noon.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

NEED MORE HOURS!!!! Not just during finals but late night hours all the time!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The copy machines suck they are always messed up in one way or the other. You need to go back to the coins and have the cards an option. I hate trying to find references half the time the ones that I find on a search are not available or the ones that are, are not on the shelves and won't be for day even weeks. It is very frustrating.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

I would like the weekend hours to be longer especially in the morning.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The two things in the library that need to be addressed the most are the computer labs and the "library use only" reserve items. The computer labs are supremely poorly maintained. I am an Apple technical specialist and I have been in charge of maintaining large campus computer labs before at the University of Washington. The large lab on the first floor is a perfect example. The application start times are horrible and the virus scan every time you insert a disk is both unnecessary and horrendously slow. None of this is helped by the rudest computer staff it has ever been my displeasure to encounter. While the computer labs probably don't fall directly under the purview of the library, as part of the library they reflect on the quality of the library. Further, unless books sleep, the "library use only" reserve policy should be changed. While I understand the philosophy behind always having certain reserve materials available while the library is open, this should be tempered with a willingness to make those materials of use. This could be best done by applying an overnight use policy to all reserve materials along with much higher late fines for those "red tape" reserve items.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The library hours are not convenient. There are minimal book selections. Most of the books are very scientific we need variety. I cant find a decent poetry book. Get some new books. Make sure books are on shelf before mailing out an overdue this happened twice to me and the book was on the shelf. Its good to have a survey

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

I want copy machines in 2nd floor to be more updated and usable because they are often unavailable. Also, I wish there are copy machines in 3rd floor. I like the CD reserves very much!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

finding up to date, recent information in the library can be quite a challenge at times, sometimes finding a book post 1980 on desired subjects (usually sciences) is impossible. scientific journals have a decent availability, but seem to have a long absence period due to reshelving lag time. information on the third floor, government documents, humboldt room, etc... take a bit of training to be able to find, it seems a more user friendly method of accessing these things would be helpful. newspapers: finding recent (within the same week) issues of newspapers is often an incompletable task.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

I have found that the libraries biological journal collection doesn't meet my research needs. Some older issues reported to be in microfilm in catalyst do not exist in the collection. ILL requests take so long that by the time I finally get the article I no longer need it. The processing of converting teaching material to an electronic format is slow and my teachers do not have all of their original material for the class in time (photographic slides).

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The digital lab is poor in every aspect of service, courtesy and knowledge. The help desk on the other hand is the most helpful and knowledgable in the library on more than just computers. The guy in the map area is really great and so are the 2 women at the info./reference desk. I feel, as I have for 3 years, that they are understaffed there. And the Humboldt Room hours are FAR too limited for student needs. All of which stems from the Dean of the library's lack, in many areas, of customer service and knowledge of library services and needs.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The library should be open later on Fridays and earlier on Saturdays, maybe an hour or two.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Interlibrary Loan has been great. Access to online scientific/math journals is poor (not user friendly or search friendly, few of them seem to work as described). SciDirect seems to be the only one that has worked for me. The online digital book collection that catalyst refers to is really lame; copywrite paranoia seems to have made it extreemly inconvenient to use.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

map section: could use better quality, quantiy, and improved viewing area

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The hours are horrible. Needs to be open more like every other college library in America. The computer lab on the bottom floor is pretty awful. The MAC/PC situation doesn't work well. The percentage of MAC users on campus must be less the 5% so why are all the computer's MACs???

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Our library employees are incredible. They are very willing to help and take the time to explain how things work. The main thing that I think could be done to make the library better is to have expanded access to electronic and print scientific journals. It would be great if the access we had could expand beyond the library and into the campus computer labs as well.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

I do not understand why the library is not open fri and sat evenings. There is really nowhere on a fri or sat night for someone to study in all of arcata. I also am very disappointed in the online search engines this library has. I am on exchange from Virginia Tech and there search engine are far superior and much easier to use and fine information so i KNOW there are better online facilities available. It seems like your library has alot of journals but its not easy to find articles.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The copying services at the library are utterly inadequate. There are no color copiers, the business hours of the copy center are horrible and the copiers are old and are often broken down. There have been several times, when for some reason or another I have not been able to make the copies I need at the library and have had to check out books and haul them to kinkos.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Need more immediate access to health-related journals (electronic or hard copy ok)

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

*Extended Library hours on sauturday and friday evenings would be helpful. *Enforce no cellular phones and talking in the quiet areas. *More group study rooms on the third floor, two rooms are not enough to meet student needs. *Do not allow homeless people to live and use the library as their personal home (ie. bathing in the restrooms, sleeping on the couches, etc.)

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

I would like to see more scientific journals available on line so that copying from the journals can be reduced.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

More access to online journals would be great, full text online journals.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Copy center usage is included in library resources to me and this semester the services are woefully negligent. Several times copiers have been down due to paper jams or just out of paper, a considerably easy fix, but because the copy center was not open nobody could fix the problem. Three times there was not a single copier in the library that was working properly. Since I live out of town this cuts into valuable time and resources to try to get copies of literature required for research.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

There are three areas which need significant improvement a.s.a.p. 1)copy machine availability and service - more machines are needed, and a copy center employee needs to be on site during all library hours; 2)library hours should be extended, especially on Fri evenings and weekends; 3)a search engine that allows keyword searches of specific publications (journals) is badly needed. Thanks!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

longer hours on he weekends and friday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Open earlier on weekends, stay open during holidays, and stay open later on Friday and Saturday. Also, some scientifuc journals are sorely lacking.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The library is not open long enough and needs more weekend and late night hours, not just during finals!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

i need/ would like to see more journals added to the collection. I would like more environmentally minded journals. i have lists that i would like to see in the library plus it would be very helpful to get more access to journals online possibly earlier versions than majority being 1995. sometimes for reserach i need journals dating back to 1980's thank you. everyone at the library is very kind also

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

My biggest complaint is with a lack of recent books in sciences and health sciences etc. There is a fairly good selesction but it could be better. Of course, the library is not so big that it could house everything but...also, the journal subscriptions could be expanded-online or print. There are alot of neat chemistry journals like Free Radical Research and others that are needed by some students for research or personal interest! I am happy for the online journal subscriptions and databases though. That makes life alot easier!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

I love that the library here at HSU, it is an inviting and a comfortable place to study. Sources of information are fairly easy to find and the service is good. The aspects that I feel need improvement are........ The photocopy machines need attention in the sense of being able to make two-sided copies and the lack of availability due to the need of servicing( i.e. paper jams, etc...) I am also very upset in the computer changes in the lab. No one asked the students if they wanted macs in the lab and the PC compatibilty is very SLOW, I used to always use this computer lab, now I have to go elsewhere.. I can not emphasize this point any more strongly, the macs are a dissappointment!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

just make it free to print if you swipe your student id and cost money if you don't have one at the printer on floor 1

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Need more people that actually know how to help in the computer lab.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Needs to stay open longer hours

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

i like how quickly the interlibrary loan service works, and how helpful the librarians are at the desk downstairs. i wish the interlibrary loan service was a little more extensive, but it's still really great, and it's super how you don't have to pay for it!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

If possible, it would be wonderful to have extended library hours...especially on weekends as well as opening earlier during the weekdays.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The only problem i've run across is finding help in the computer lab. You can't exactly run next door if you have a question or you'll end up fighting someone for your seat. The one time I did get help though the guy who assisted me was very helpful. One last thing, I love that there's so many couches!!!!!!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The library staff are great! They are knowledgeable and friendly! The facilities are in great need of improvement Library hours are not sufficient for my study needs. As a biology student and parent with a job, I frequently need to use the library research facilities and study areas between the hours of 6am and 7:30am on weekdays, between 7am and 11am on weekends and after 5:30pm on Saturdays. In addition, the loss of the copy center has greatly hindered my ability to complete assignements in a timely fashion. For example, I cannot get coppies made on campus after 5:30pm on weekends or before 1pm on sundays and after 4pm on saturdays and sundays. In addition the copy machines are constantly breaking. The journal collections are not that complete for science articles, but interlibrary loan makes up for that. Again, my biggest gripe are the meager weekend library hours

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

The Library needs to bring its collection up to date. There are far too many outdated and antiquated books on the shelves.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

More complete collections of scientific journals would make research much easier. I really appreciate the access to computer workstations and unlimited use of printers.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

Overall I feel extension of your buisiness hours would be the greatest improvement. of all the schools I have attended you have the strangest hours for a university library.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

some of the services are difficult to figure out, but there are people there very willing to help make it easier for you, and once one learns the system there is an amazing amount of information available.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Science / Math

University libraries should not clost at 5 pm Friday and Saturday. I understand the need for cutting cost, but many students work and this is the optimum study/research time, which is denied to them. Also, the Humboldt Room has some of the most inconvenient hours imaginable for a full time student trying to do research.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

The Humboldt Room needs longer hours.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

I wish our library were larger and that we had research assistants. Hours of the humboldt room, the copy center, and sometime even the librarians make them avaliable during the work hours of the days. Unfortunatly i rarely have time to visit the library from 8-5, seeing as i am in class or working during those hours.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

electronic services are often not functioning properly

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

The library's microfilm viewers are archaic, and frequently out of service. The periodicals office should be located near the microfilms and other periodicals (perhaps in the rooms now occupied by the copy center), so that students who require assistance can get the help they need and deserve. Barring that, a sign should at least be posted to tell people where they can go to get help with microfilms and other periodicals. Students ought to be permitted to check audiovisual materials out of the library, even if it were just a limited checkout of a few days. Videocassets are actually a less valuable resource than most books, so the double standard doesn't make sense. If instructors sometimes need the videos for classroom presentations, they can always put a hold on them. The lighting in the general-interest magazine area is way too dim to permit safe or healthy reading. Loud, boistrous conversation is sometimes emitted from the librarians' offices on the upper floors. Perhaps someone needs to tell them, "quiet! This is a library!"

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

In my opinion, after 4 years at HSU, the library has done little to make improvements. Large amounts of space are wasted and students do not use many sections of the library that could be better put to use. We need more computers in the library. I do find most of the books I need but the periodicals are still difficult to navigate through and the periodical help office is not helpful. Thanks!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

I do not like the new computers in the library at all. I am at school so that I can learn skills to get a job. The vast majority of business uses PC's, yet the computer labs are Mac's. I find the arugment that the Mac's are okay because they have a PC platform to be flawed because when users use the PC mode it slows the computers down so much it is ridiculas. Frankly, I would be happy if the library brought back some of the older PC's instead of the new Mac's. I would like to see the library open later on Fridays and Saturdays.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

Many of the books are really old! Is there any chance of getting some updated information?

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

We need more computers and more up-to-date neurology & psychology journals

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Social Sciences / Psychology

My only complaints about the library facilities, are that there are not enough computers available and I don't like that all of the computers available are Mac's. I think the library should have at least one computer lab of IBMs. Also, the library opens kind of late on the weekends. Thanks!

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Undecided

streamlined way to get reserved items and cds

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Undecided

the hours are at times too short.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

material incomplete - the course on internet resourcees is good, but could be better - take longer - updates

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

There should be a section of the library open 24 hours a day, especially during finals week. Allowing a place where students can go all the time to do work.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

-most of the employees are very helpful -the copy center's hours are horrible -i would like to see more recent books in the travel section

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

This library has all the resources needed to satisfy whatever curriculum one has.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

Dissatisfied with the Reserve items policy and access. Overnight checkout should be commonplace, reserve materials should be scanned into a database for electronic retrieval, and videos should be available for removal from library. In addition, library hours should be extended (especially since some institutions even have 24 hour library access and HSU is not even close).

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

I did a search for some books at the library back at the beginning of February and I still have not received any information back on those books. This kind of service is unacceptible.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

While the library provides extensive resources on some subjects, others, especially anthropology, are signifigantly limited. It would be excellent to subscribe to current journals in anthropology and bulk up other print resources. I have been frustrated with this issue as an anthropology major for four years here at Humboldt.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

There needs to be a broader range of information with easier access, especially in the area of ethnobotany or economic botany.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

I wish that there were more up to date books concerning female biology and illnesses. The air quality has much to be desired and when it is mentioned I get an apathetic response.

Undergraduate, Senior (Year 4), Other

The staff in the copy room is rude and does not appear to want to work, also the hours are very unconvienant. Also to many books are located only in the Humboldt Room and I beleive they should be placed for general check out.

Graduate, Masters, Agriculture / Environmental Studies

I have always found the library staff to be very helpful especially in the Humboldt room and the Government Document collections. I think that the copy center is a valuable resource. Access to copiers is very important. I use one almost everytime I am at the library.

Graduate, Masters, Business

there is not enough updated informtion when it comes to manufacturing and other industirial technlogical advancements.

Graduate, Masters, Education

It was highly difficult for me to do online research during fall semester.

Graduate, Masters, Education

Low scores are generally related to remote access issues and availability of full text specialized journals and other resources. I have Ingenta, but have not had good success with it yet. I think the people, both professional staff and student employees, are friendly, accomodating, knowledgable and very willing to listen and help me...please let them know.

Graduate, Masters, Education

I would like to see The Indian Language periodical that is written in English and Karuk. In general I would like to see more culturally diverse childrens literature. This area specifically needs books written bilingually in local Native Nation languages, Hmong, Punjabi, Spanish,Somoan, and others. Is there any way to let fresh air into the library?

Graduate, Masters, Education

It is not the staff that I can find most fault with but the resources available at the library. The generation of new insights into our understanding of the liberal arts disciplines of which we are involved requires that the most recent published works be available to all levels of students. At another level, reshelving the books we already have in our library in a timely manner is a realistic and immediately possible program of action.

Graduate, Masters, Engineering / Computer Science

HSU has a fine library. Journals are fairly well represented in my discipline.

Graduate, Masters, Engineering / Computer Science

Friday evening and saturday afternoon hours should be extended to 7-8PM. Especially friday. Opening @ 10AM on sat & sun would be nice too. In a school with such a strong emphasis on the sciences & engineering, I know lots of people who would benefit from extended wkend hours.

Graduate, Masters, Health Sciences

The macs royaly stink- get some straight IBM combatables. The majority of the student population doesn't use mac and they tend to be slower and less reliable when switched to the more popular Windows OP. The library really needs a better selection of journals fro all feilds of study. They are often the best source of information for studies and research projects. Ingenta and interlibrary loans do not always cut it. The employees are awesome!! verey helpful and always friendly.

Graduate, Masters, Humanities

My only request is for more timely reshelving of books once they are returned.

Graduate, Masters, Humanities

Friday night the library closes pretty early. Meybe no one else is interested in studying at that time, but I have been surprised to have to leave at 6pm. There are very old copies of books and many books that the library does not own. I am very disppointed with the state of our collection of print sources, but I realize it takes a lot of money to update things. The technology is not only the computer. There was no machine available to use certain microfilm type things last semester and though we had the info, I could not access it because we didn't have a working machine that was necessary to view it. the workers are usually quite helpful, but sometimes I have to be pretty aggressive about seeking help. some people might not be so comfortable having to assert themselves so strongly to get assistance or answers.

Graduate, Masters, Performing & Fine Arts

as a film student i read a lot of the recent publications in regards to new technology. "American Cinematographer" and other such magazines are extremely helpful, but sometimes are lost and not replaced. But such magazines, when they are there, are absolutely invaluable. If more were to be available, I would be extremely happy, but what is there now is most definiely satisfactory. thank you very much.

Graduate, Masters, Performing & Fine Arts

I have been very pleased with the speediness of the interlibrary loan resource.

Graduate, Masters, Performing & Fine Arts

I am in theatre and work a lot of odd hours that the information desk is sometimes closed this is the only problem I have at all.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

My biggest problem with the library is the periodical collection: reshelving seems to take a while, and collections are very incomplete. There are also many journals that I would like to see added to the collection, in the wildlife disease/parasitology area.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

In general, I am quite pleased with the services I receive at HSU's library. However, I would like to see the following points improved upon: 1.) expand access to scientific journals either through on-line access or through physical subscriptions, 2.)increase hours the library is open (perhaps 7 a.m. to midnight Sunday - Thursday and more availability on the weekends) and 3.) designate "Quiet Study" areas that actually remain quiet (I realize this is the responsibility of individual users of the library, but perhaps specifically designated areas that are comfortable to study in could be assigned this title). Thank you.

Very good on the e-services - esp knowing that keeping all print material up todate would be hard its nice to be able to use the home web browser and login to the proxy to search the online databases - though its sometimes hard to figure out what online database is acceptable for some work - esp when working in a discpline that is not our first choice (general ed classes, interdisplinary projects etc)

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

There are a lot of journals that the library does not carry that I have needed in the past. (Geology Journals)

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

Great library!!! Quiet places inwhich to study, lots of resources, excellent staff. Only improvement-timely reshelving of books. They have a tendency to stack up.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

I would like to see the library extend their hours (later on fridays and earlier on weekends). It would also be nice to see a photographic slide collection available.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

I realize that my comment may not directly relate to library management, but it does relate to the the quality of service that students recieve in the library. I have been attending HSU since 1995 and the quality of service provided by the copy center has continually declined. Problems inlclude the following: 1) at least 1/3 of all copiers are non-functional at all times; 2) number of copy machines has decreased (i.e. copier was removed from below the bookstore; 3) staplers were removed; 4)more copy machines are needed-perhaps on the bottom floor; 5) speed of copiers is poor (i.e. must wait for entire cycle to complete before starting another copy) This makes copying time consuming and tedius. A few of the copiers do not have this problem. Based upon the responses from the library suggestion box, it has been the policy of the library to continually state that copy center concerns should be addressed to the copy center. However, students can not anonomously submit suggestions to the copy center. Perhaps a suggestion box outside the copy center is in order. Although the copy center is not run by the libray, it does directly relate to the quality of service within the library. Besides the copy center issue, I feel that the quality of service in the library is excellent. Thanks, Jason

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

weekend hours could be a little longer on Sat. good service overall. catalyst needs some work.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

My main advice is to keep the library open for later hours than it currently is.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

My primary use is in periodicals which are often off the shelves, not on the return desks or dollies or anywhere to be found. I know you don't want to encourage people to hang out in front of the computers but some tall chairs at the upstairs computers would be nice when you need to sit down and do some long database searches. Third floor government docs and the maps/Humboldt room area needs to be reshelved more often. Thanks.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

I think the library in general is doing a great job. My biggest complaint is that the copy machines are frequently broken/jammed and the copy center hours have been reduced. It would be helpful to have someone check the copy machines more regularly, or have the copy center open for longer hours.

Graduate, Masters, Science / Math

It can be hard to find on-line journal articles. Please make that more obvious! Also, is the "reference desk" on-line service available for any kind of question, or do I have to be wondering about something specific?

Graduate, Masters, Social Sciences / Psychology

I am EXTREMELY displeased that remote internet services are not offered. I am dissatisfied with the limited resources, such as books and journals, I cannot count how many times I had to use interlibrary loan, which was slow and a ridiculous system in my opinion. The check out times should be the same as books checked out from HSU. Copy services need a complete overhaul. That is absolutely ridiculous--the Copy Center hours AND the ancient machines. I have many more complaints about the library but none about the people who work there. They are always very kind and helpful, but a little short staffed at times. Thanks.

Graduate, Masters, Social Sciences / Psychology

The primary issue is availability of materials. Videos need to be something that students can check out, and both periodical and book collections need to be more comprehensive if HSU wants to be considered a top-notch institution. Electronic information is not a substitute!

Graduate, Masters, Social Sciences / Psychology

The library needs more books, and Graduate students should be able to take videos out of the library.

Graduate, Masters, Social Sciences / Psychology

HSU library service is excellent. Mary Kay is one of the greatest assets of the University! However there is one SERIOUS problem I have with the library. I am a graduate student; I am also employed full time in another town. I also have a teenaged child. The Library hours on the weekends are ludicrous. Weekends: Friday and Saturday nights are when serious students who also have lives (work, family, etc.) do their research and homework. I really wish the library were open 'till 2 am on these nights...at least give it as much chance to be accessed as the bars!!!

Graduate, Masters, Social Sciences / Psychology

It would be tremdously helpful to me if more journals were available on-line.

Graduate, Masters, Social Sciences / Psychology

The staff is usually available and willing to help. The hours are inconvenient, especially on weekends (need to open earlier in AM), breaks, and holidays. Inter-library loan is wonderful, but library lacks a lot of journals. Micro- film and micro-fiche are hard to use, expensive to copy (20 cents per copy), and result in poor quality copies.

Graduate, Masters, Other

In general I am very impressed with the technology that the library has to offer in terms of remote use and electronic documents, as well as limited online copies of journal articles (more of these would be great, however). However, the copiers are a continuing frustration. They are always on the blink, and are very slow and outdated. I couldn't be more appreciative of the copy center, it is an incredibly valuable resource at a great price. Overall I am very happy with the library. Thanks!

Graduate, Masters, Other

The I.L.L is wonderful, but it would be nicer to have a larger selection of journal titles available on campus. It would be convenient if the library copy center was open longer hours. It would be good to have routine checks of equipment (e.g. microfilm mechine)to ensure everything is working properly or at least prompt repair of broken machines.

Graduate, Masters, Other

I would like to see more paper journals dealing with the teaching of english as a second language

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Education

Childrens literature selections desperately need to be updated! Also, every professor should have at least one copy of course texts on reserve for in-library use.

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Education

Your video library is extensive and could be a valuable learning tool...however, because you do not allow students to check them out, the tapes are mainly just collecting dust...such a waste!

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Education

I think that HSU's library offers a very useable and comfortable work area. It also has very convenient hours and a very friendly staff.

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Education

The children's literature and curriculum collection is very dated. There is so much exciting literature out there. Better curriculum resources would greatly help us in the education department.

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Education

Two recommendations: weekend hours begin a little earlier, and that areas are a little better marked.

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Science / Math

I'd like to see the collection expanded.I would espectally ltke to see copies of more of the Humboldt Room collection available for circulation. Better copy machines would be nice - and change machines that give dimes if that is going to be the price of a copy. If the library is going to charge $1.00/day for qverdue books, I think it's only fair to print that fact on the due-date slip. But generally it's a great resource. Keep up the good work and thanks for asking my grumpy opinion.

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Science / Math

Selection of technical journals in biological and other sciences of insuffucient size. Not a very good research library at all. Interlibrary loan services are not a good substitute, I percieve it as a crutch that allows the library of this university to limp along.

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Other

Computers for catalog access on first floor are badly in need of upkeep. Most of them have defective space bars, for example.

Graduate, Non-degree or Undecided, Other

need more journals and should make more journals available in full text or on-line. Also, should expand library hours. new web page is more difficult to navigate when trying to query things. Many wildlife journals are not being subscribed to. It still seems difficult to get all the references needed sometimes by having to fill out so many cards for interlibrary loans or government documents, etc. that aren't available in our library.

Faculty, Other Academic Status, Science / Math

Major problem I have is that access to journals more than 5 yrs old is difficult, and that the journal collection is not very comprehensive. I'd like it to be open for longer hours, too. But the people are friendly and helpful, and it's a pleasant place to be.

Faculty, Other Academic Status, Science / Math

Am frequently frustrated by limited hours during breaks and over holidays.

Faculty, Other Academic Status, Science / Math

With regard to such things as interlibrary loan, use of electronic resources etc. I wish the library would estabish a section of their web page specifically to give written usage instructions on established and on newly available resources for faculty (students also where appropriate). I think the major hindrance to my use is not knowing exactly what is available and if I, as faculty, am using it to its full capability.

Faculty, Other Academic Status, Science / Math

Would like longer library ours and more complete holdings

Faculty, Other Academic Status, Other

more budget for library acquisitions in print more direct librarian contact with students in classes

Faculty, Lecturer, Communications / Journalism

Very good support of class activities in the library.

Faculty, Lecturer, Social Sciences / Psychology

I think that I would use services more frequently if there were a more complete selection of journals or journal access. I have difficulty with home computer based research of library data banks.

Faculty, Lecturer, Other

The only real difficulty I have experienced in terms of library service has been in having documents posted on ONCORES in a timely fashion. My sense is that that department is somewhat overworked, and I would suggest adding additional support for what is an extremely useful and important library resource (and one which I'm sure will only increase in use by the faculty and student population).

Faculty, Lecturer, Other

I teach in a small department. I continue to find that the print resources my students need for their research is not available in this library. I realize that the library cannot be all things to all people. However, I know that my students' needs are not being met. That concerns me.

Faculty, Assistant Professor, Science / Math

The largest limitation with our current library is the lack of journal holdings - online or print. While I understand the financial limitations of our system, I wonder whether the decreased costs of interlibrary loan would offset new online journal holdings.

Faculty, Assistant Professor, Science / Math

Online remote access to journal articles and databases is great! I also support the acquisition of print materials, especially books but also journals. The recent automation of the interlibrary loan and renewal functions is very helpful. You also do a pretty good job (compared with many other libraries I've known) at getting books reshelved in a timely manner. Finally, I have been quite pleased with the willingness of the library to acquire materials I request. One area where I have been less than pleased is in knowledge of the reference librarians. It seems that many (not all) are not familiar with the range of print and online sources available, and the contents of each. I have frequently found that I can do better stumbling around on my own than consulting a reference librarian. But bottom line- You're doing a great job!

Faculty, Assistant Professor, Social Sciences / Psychology

Additional and more complete journal selections would be helpful

Faculty, Assistant Professor, Social Sciences / Psychology

Another microfilm reader with a printer would really be nice. There is presently only one (I think) and that can put a cramp on research at times. I would also like more information about faculty book ordering policy. I am new faculty and I have never (at least I don't think I have) received any information on collection development policy, how I can make suggestions for books to be ordered etc. Giving new faculty some indication of collection development practices (and, I suppose) ideals, would be beneficial. A memo or email or something. I would also like to say that the ILL services here have been great. Delivery has been prompt and the on-line requests through Pharos work really well too. I'm very impressed by ILL services so far.

Faculty, Associate Professor, Humanities

We need more rhetoric and composition journals and books. That's my only "beef." Otherwise, it's a superb, excellent library.

Faculty, Associate Professor, Humanities

The main difficulty I have is with the small journal selection. The staff are knowledgeable, quick, and very helpful. I would judge the journal collection in my discipline as about half what it should be. I know this requires lots more budget than we have, and that fact is the most telling regarding the CSU's and this campus's lack of support for the library.

Faculty, Associate Professor, Other

I had a sense that the servey is trying to distinguish between priority for remote access and priority for on-site access. While I appreciate very much having access from my desk and being able to take student into labs and do searches with them, the library for me still needs to be a place for thoughtful reflection and focused intellectual search where there are knowledgeable people who can help brainstorm and challenge search strategies. While I realize that resource constraints require priorities and sometimes tradeoffs, a library is much more than a data base and reducing it to one would be a great disservice to the learning community.

Faculty, Professor, Business

Library hours during breaks and holidays are not
satisfactory.

Faculty, Professor, Engineering / Computer Science

I feel that the HSU library has made great advances in the past 10 years in providing convenient access to materials, especically online. However I often know which journal(s) I wish to find articles in but find it cumbersome to locate those journals within the various databases. It would be useful to have a lookup table of databases by journal title and topic.

Faculty, Professor, Humanities

I have found it frustrating over the years for the library to be closed the weekend before the first week of classes. But the library faculty/staff are, in my view, pleasant and hard-working and helpful.

Faculty, Professor, Humanities

Professional staff is excellent--competent, friendly, helpful. Library is weak on journal collections and electronic bases do not completely do the job yet. Some databases are difficult to use, though most are fine.

Faculty, Professor, Humanities

Too many books in my field are not in the library which forces me to buy the books or use interlibrary loan. The latter time constraints make it too difficult to use the loaned books for research.

Faculty, Professor, Science / Math

As a scholar, I find my Library's journal collection rather inadequate, although the collection of books is good. This is not a research library, which is a shortcoming for both classroom teaching and professional scholarship. I wouldn't want the acquisition of new book titles to be sacrificed for the expansion of journal holdings, however, as both are very important. Because of my Library's remote location in the State, it would be appropriate for it to receive additional funding for new accessions, beyond whatever supplementation it already receives. These aspects of the Library are MUCH more important than expansion of electronic data facilties, which already have cost far too much -- at the expense of journals and books. The old-fashioned card catalog was quite adequate for finding library materials, but when the very books and journals themselves are lacking, literature research is very difficult; there has been too much emphasis on electronic hardware and databases and not enough on traditional hard-copy holdings.

Faculty, Professor, Social Sciences / Psychology

The ideal library for me would be full text scientific journals totally on line and the library resources spent on maintaining the databases and helping beginners use the databases for school or home. Delete the staff, building, and paper in the library.
