Welcome to the Classical Café!
The first broadcast of the Classical Café was on Monday, October 16, 2006.
About The Show
Please join me at the Classical Café every Monday morning from 10:00 to noon, Pacific Time. Our musical menu offers selections in the Western tradition from earliest times to the 21st Century.
Most of the music you will hear at the Classical Café is available for checkout from the Humboldt State University Library. In general, library borrowing is available to anyone age 18 or over who is either affiliated with the University or a member of the local community. For more information, see the Library’s Who May Borrow page or call the Circulation desk, 707-826-3431. Equipment for listening to CDs in the Library without checking them out is available in the Media Resources area on the 2nd floor. I’m happy to play requests at the Café. Please contact me by email or call my office in the Library at 707-826-5600 and leave a message at any time.
The show is broadcast on KHSU-FM, a PBS affiliate for the North Coast of California and the Southern Coast of Oregon. KHSU can be heard at 90.5 Arcata, 91.9 Crescent City/Brookings, 89.1 Ferndale-Fortuna, 89.7 Garberville, 99.7 Willow Creek and on-line at khsu.org.
The theme music for the Classical Café is the Minuet from Boccherini’s String Quintet in E Major, Op. 13, no 5.
About The Host
My name is Martha Johansen. In addition to hosting the Classical Café, I am a librarian at Humboldt State University, where music is among my areas of specialty. Please visit my library homepage for more information about my professional activities.
I am a life-long music lover and an amateur musician, having studied flute, recorder, voice, and piano. My teachers have included Carol Ryder, Lyra Satloff, and MIJ Bradley. I am currently studying piano with Elizabeth Rau McCubbrey. I was a member of the Humboldt Chorale for several years under the direction of the late Kenneth Hannaford and a member of the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir, under Lourin Plant.
