Finding Psychological Tests and Measures
This guide will help you find the right psychological test or measure for your research needs. This can be a challenging task since 1) there is no single source to consult; and 2) your source may only include a test description or review, not an actual copy of the test. |

Introduction
Availability of psychological tests and measures depends on whether they are published or unpublished, as defined below:
- Published tests are commercially available for purchase. These measurement instruments have established validity, reliablility and norms and typically come with test manuals and testing protocols. In many cases only qualified or professionally trained individuals can purchase copies. The HSU Library does not collect restricted tests.
- Unpublished tests are found in the scholarly literature of psychology and have typically been developed by university researchers or other professionals, government agencies, or nonprofit organizations. Copies of these tests may sometimes be found as appendices to journal articles, dissertations, books and other research reports. While access to these tests is not restricted, ethical conduct requires that these tests should be used only with the permission of the instrument's author. Copies of tests that are not available in publications in the HSU Library may be borrowed through Interlibrary Loan.
The HSU Psychology Department Psychological Test Library (BSS Room 411) has copies of some published and unpublished tests. Access to and use of these and other tests is governed by standards developed by the American Psychological Association.
For additional background information see Finding Information about Psychological Tests from the American Psychological Association.
Key Sources for Finding Tests
The following table lists key sources for finding tests and measures. The table links to more detailed annotations for each source. Each of these sources may do one or more of the following:
- Serve as a directory of available published and/or unpublished tests
- Allow searching by test name and/or subject
- Identify journal articles, book compilations, dissertations, etc. that contain copies of tests
- Include critical reviews of tests
- Idenitify tests used as part of scholarly research

Instruments are selected because 1) they measure common problems and 2) they are brief and easy to administer and score. Measures in Volume 1 are focused around children, families, and couples. Vvolume 2 focuses on problems of adults "outside the context of the family." For each instrument background, purpose, description, norms, scoring reliability and validity information is provided along with a primary reference and availability information. Beginning with the 14th edition, MMYB reviews "only those tests with at least a minimum of technical and/or development information available." See How to Use the Mental Measurements Yearbook and Using a Mental Measurements Yearbook Review to Evaluate a Test for additional information. Both Test Reviews Online and the print work Tests in Print serve as a cumulative index to tests reviewed in the MMYB.

- Behavioral assessment of children
The HSU Library Catalog is the primary source for locating books on tests in the HSU Library. The general test subject headings used for indexing for books are psychological tests and educational tests and measurement. Look under these two subjects to find suggestions for many other more specific subjects, e.g., intelligence tests or personality tests. You may also look under the name of a specific test, e.g., the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule or the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory.
There are also subjects for specific populations:
Literature Databases
These databases typically index articles that use a particular test in their methodology or focus on evaluating a specific test.
- CINAHL - Current Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature [restricted to the HSU community]
- Database to nursing research that includes over 250 tests and measurements, some of which include the full-text of the test. Others entries include a table with specifics on the purpose, population sampled, methodology, type of instrument and test source.
Options for finding tests in CINHL include:
- To see all tests--enter "research instrument" in the first search box and change the pull-down menu to "Publication Type".
- To find a specific test-- enter a test name.
- To find a test on a research topic--repeat #1 above and enter a subject keyword(s) in the second search box that describes the type of test in which you are interested, e.g., "death".
- Dissertations and Theses: The Humanities and Social Sciences Collection (restricted to the HSU community]
- This database includes the full-text of dissertations and theses. Both published and unpublished tests may be the focus of graduate research or more typically used in the research design. Copies of unpublished tests are often included in the appendices of a dissertation or thesis. Search by test name or use subject keywords along with keywords for "test", e.g., "body image and test". See Theses and Dissertations for additional databases.

-
Includes medical journal articles that have used test and measurement instruments. Options for searching in the database include:
- Search by test name--enter your test name.
- Search for tests by subject – Use one of the Medical Subject Headings (MESH) for tests and measures: "psychological tests," "intelligence tests," "neuropsychological tests," "educational measurement," or "personality tests " etc. Combine this with a keyword for the concept you want your scale to measure, e.g., body image.
- PsycINFO [restricted to the HSU community]
- Indexes 1) tests that are used in psychological research studies; and 2) studies that have evaluated a specific test or group of tests on a specific topic. For a basic introduction on how to search for tests see the online tutorial In Search of Tests and Measures. In the database you can:
- Search for studies that used a specific test or measure--enter your test name using the Tests and Measures field; or use More Search Options to browse for your specific test. (note: it is best to omit the scale, inventory, etc. part of a test name, e.g, use just "myers briggs type".)
- Search for studies that have evaluated a specific test --repeat #1 above in the first row of search boxes and in the second row of search boxes enter "222*", changing the pull-down menu to the Classification field. This will find publications where measurement, test construction, and test validity are major aspects of a study.
- Search for tests on a specific topic-- enter subject keywords, e.g., "body image" to find studies on a topic. Review the records you find, looking specifically at the Test and Measures field to see what tests have been used. Repeat #1 and/or #2 above to find additional studies and information about these tests.
- Search for copies of tests -- Repeat #1 above, adding the keyword "appended" in the same box, e.g., "male body image appended". (Since 2004 PsycInfo has added the keyword "appended" in this field if a publication includes the actual copy of the test.)
