Information Literacy Services
In support of the California State University’s commitment to information literacy, the Humboldt State University Library offers the following services.
All Patrons
The Library’s homepage has several useful links, such as
- Library Services,
- Help in using the HSU Library catalog,
- Subject Research Guides
- How Do I Find...?
Librarians are available at the Research Help desk on the first floor during these hours to provide assistance with research and library use. Come in, or contact a librarian by phone, chat, or email.
The Library does not offer tours of the building, but interested groups are welcome to conduct their own orientations, using the resources noted on this page. To arrange a visit to the Library:
- The organizer should contact the Information Services office at 826-4953 (if no answer, please call 826-3441) at least one week in advance to notify us of your intentions.
- If children through grade 8 are brought to the Library, they should be accompanied by at least one adult for every 10 children.
- Please consult the university’s Academic Calendar and try not to schedule a library visit during final examinations or the week before.
HSU Students & Faculty
Individual instruction and assistance
- Research Help desk during these hours
- Contact a librarian by phone, email, or chat
- Schedule an appointment with the librarian for your course department or major.
Introductory course instruction
- Instructors may use this form to arrange for an introduction to library resources by a librarian for a particular course
- Instructors may prefer to provide this level of instruction themselves, in consultation with the librarian for their department. Please notify your librarian of your plans, and provide copies of any library assignments to your librarian before distributing the assignment to your students.
- Instructors may assign material from Research Roadmap to their students.
Instruction in research sources and methods for a course or discipline
- Instructors may use this form to arrange for instruction by a librarian in research techniques and resources relevant to the discipline or course topic. These sessions may be one class period or several. They are usually offered to “introduction to the major,” upper-division, or graduate courses.
Faculty consultations
- Librarians are available to consult with HSU faculty members individually or in groups concerning specialized research needs, to update database searching skills, etc. Please contact the librarian for your department or subject area for more information.
Other Academic Patrons
- For instruction to high school and community college classes, the teacher should contact the librarian for the subject most closely related to that of their class.
- All teachers and interested individuals are welcome to use Research Roadmap for an introduction to library resources and the research process.
School Groups and Teachers
Librarians provide instruction to high school and community college classes as a supplement to instruction first provided at the local school. For more information, the teacher should contact the subject bibliographer for the subject most closely related to that of their class.
All teachers and interested individuals are welcome to make use of Research Roadmap.
The Library does not offer tours of the building for non-HSU groups. Interested groups are welcome to conduct their own orientations, using the resources noted above. The organizer should contact the Information Services office at 826-4953 (if no answer, please call 826-3441) at least one week in advance to notify us of your intentions. If children through grade 8 are brought to the Library, they should be accompanied by at least one adult for every 10 children. Pre-finals and final exam week, noted on the Academic Calendar, are not good times for visits to the library. Please schedule your visits with this in mind.
Community Groups
Librarians provide instruction to nonuniversity groups on a very selective basis on subject matter connected with the university curriculum. Groups should contact the Information Services office at 826-4953 (if no answer, please call 826-3441) at least one week in advance to request an instructional session.
Groups are welcome to make use of the self-paced Research Roadmap.
