Goverment information includes any publications issued by local, state, national or international governments. Government documents contain a wealth of primary sources for research. You can find information about the government and its branches, and on subjects ranging from Afghanistan to tornadoes. Government information includes laws, regulations, statistics, reports, consumer information, maps, and much more. Government agencies publish material ranging from pamphlets on how to grow rhododendrons to massive technical reports on deep sea drilling. Expert testimony on many subjects is published in hearings held by legislative committees.
Our Documents Collection consists of U.S. and California State documents only. Our Library does have documents from the governments and government agencies of other states and countries, and from international government agencies such as those of the United Nations, but these are not included in our Documents Collection. We do not collect them systematically, as we do federal and California documents. These publications are all in our Library Catalog, and they are shelved with the rest of our books or periodicals.
Government information may be in the form of printed reference works, books, periodicals, bibliographies, pamphlets, microfilm, microfiche, or in electronic forms such as CD and DVD-ROMs or the World Wide Web. Government information is generally considered to be reliable. It is a rich source of information that will be useful in many of your research projects.
