Dr. Robert A. Wallace

Dr. Robert A. Wallace, Humboldt State University Professor of Chemistry (1962-92), generously left to the H.S.U. Library his outstanding collection of over 3000 classical music compact discs, as well as many DVDs and books, both fiction and non-fiction.

Born in Chicago in 1930, Robert Wallace received his Masters degree and PhD from the University of Bonn (Germany), and in 1960 began research in enzyme kinetics at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. In 1962, he was hired as an assistant professor at Humboldt State College, where he taught until his retirement as professor in 1992. He traveled extensively throughout the world, always including visits to the great opera houses, including his favorite, the Bayreuth Festival Theater in Bavaria. While at Humboldt State, he volunteered occasionally as a classical music DJ at KHSU.

Dr. Wallace's gift nearly doubles the number of items in the Library's Audio Recordings Collection, adding significantly to the representation of Russian and Eastern European works and enriching holdings of standard repertoire with rare recordings. A rich and varied collection of recorded music is of particular value to the university, given the limited local resources for live performance.
