Checking Out Library Materials
All checkouts are done at the Circulation Desk, 1st floor lobby. All materials leaving the Library require presentation of a Library ID Card. The card must be currently valid, and must be presented by the pictured owner. For additional information on who is eligible to borrow, see who may borrow.
FORGET TO BRING YOUR ID CARD?
As a courtesy, if a borrower is temporarily without Library ID, the Circulation Desk will hold Library books for approximately 24 hours for a borrower.
MATERIAL CHECKOUT LIMITS
A borrower may normally have a maximum of 75 items checked out at any one time (no limit for faculty). Loan periods vary (see Circulation rules), but most items are loaned for 3 weeks, and most of these may be renewed 3 times (see renewals). A maximum of 3 CDs, videos, and DVDs may be checked out at one time and these have a more limited loan period, and also carry daily overdue fines.
ITEM RETRIEVAL
Most items are available in open stacks, and are expected to be located and retrieved by the borrower for checkout. Exceptions are "Case" periodicals and books. Obtain a call number from the online catalog then ask at the Circulation Desk for these exception items. Reserve materials are looked up and obtained at the Reserve Desk. In-library use of any of these protected items requires some form of photo identification. Interlibrary Loan items are ordered online and picked up at the Circulation Desk.
CHECKOUT PROCEDURES
Most items are checked out on computer and do not require any paperwork. Exceptions are uncataloged items & periodical issues, government documents, maps, and microforms. These checkouts are done on paper charge cards, which are available at the Circulation Desk; the borrower will be asked to fill out these charge cards.
LIBRARY USE ONLY
Circulation is not permitted of some items, including Reference books and Atlases, current periodical issues in plastic jackets, and specifically designated maps, government documents, Humboldt County Collection, Archives, and Case materials.
