“Outliers on Stage” has me looking at Outliers in a whole new light.

Make sure you attend this Saturday evening at 7pm (last showing, April 27) in the Studio Theater located on the second floor of the Theatre Arts Building at HSU.

The show is entirely student run and free for the whole community. Doors open 6:45 and seating is limited!

The second half of the show is not to be missed!

Outliers: The Book of the Year, Live!

ARCATA, CA. (April 22, 2013) – The students of Humboldt State University’s Advanced Oral Interpretation class proudly present “Outliers on Stage!” The performance will be an oral interpretation/reader’s theater of Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers: the Story of Success. The show begins at 7 pm on Friday April 26, 2013 and Saturday April 27, 2013 in the studio theater located on the second floor of the theater arts building on the HSU campus. “Outliers” is an examination of what truly makes people successful and
how they differ from the rest of us. The show is entirely student run and free for the whole community. Doors will open 6:45 and seating is limited!

There will be an open dress rehearsal on April 25 that is open to the public. Come by and watch the cast practice this unique, reader’s theater version of Outliers. The following two nights, Friday the 26 th and Saturday the 27th will be official performances.

This creative interpretation of Outliers was scripted and will be performed by the students of the Advanced Oral Interpretation, Comm 480. Come down and support HSU’s communication department and the HSU/CR Book of the Year program.

“Story of Success” Events a Hit!

The presentations at the two “Story of Success” events (Eureka and Crescent City) ranged from the academic to the highly personal. There was historical analysis, overcoming language obstacles, mastering an art, live music, the challenges of writing and self-publishing a book, a humorous take on learning from failure, analysis of the Outliers text as classist and not applying to queer culture, free zines, and the inspiring story of two sisters who have overcome hardship together.

Friday (Feb 22) and Saturday (Feb 23) were two revelatory evenings demonstrating that students at College of the Redwoods and Humboldt State University have acute intellects and are discerning readers, articulate communicators, and insightful.

The event proved that a text can be read in many ways, that we all can expand on a larger discourse beyond the pages of a book, and that sharing a common reading together is edifying and enlightening.

North Coast Journal Features Outliers

The February 20, 2013 issue of North Coast Journal features the Book of the Year, Outliers, in it’s “In Review” column on page 23. Anthony Correale’s quarter-page article sums up the book nicely and mentions this weekend’s Book of the Year events, starting with Friday’s 7pm event at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center in Eureka. A second performance is on Saturday at 6pm in Crescent City.

NCJ further promotes the event in the “Calendar” section on page 21. To top it all off the cover carries the bottom-right missive: “The book for a whole year” [their italics].
