Martin Wong: The Eureka Years, 1964 - 1978

Martin Wong: The Eureka Years, was an exhibition of paintings and drawings from the 1960s and 1970s by the late Martin Wong, was at the First Street Gallery in September 1999.

The exhibition showcased the artist’s work while he was residing in the Eureka area from 1964 to 1978. Much of the work in the exhibition has been borrowed from Mr. Wong’s friends who collected his work during this period. He passed away on Aug. 12, 1999.

Mr. Wong was awarded a degree from Humboldt State in 1968 and went on to earn national recognition as an artist after he moved to New York City. His New York Times obituary noted "Mr. Wong carved out a territory all his own....His art was as culturally complex as his appearance."

Time Magazine used one of Mr. Wong’s painting for a cover in 1987 and his work has been included in a number of collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the New Museum of New York City.
