CANCELLED - California Tsunami Week: Kamome & Sister City Project

This event has been postponed and may possibly be presented during L4HSU this summer.

The Extraordinary Voyage of Kamome: A Tsunami Boat Comes Home by Lori Dengler and Amya Miller is the first publication from the Humboldt State University Press. HSU emeritus Professor Lori Dengler will present this special event to highlight California Tsunami Week. Discover the sequence of extraordinary events that began with a great earthquake, followed by a tsunami and the voyage of a small boat called Kamome. This presentation will walk you through what happened and how Kamome became a miracle boat, bringing out the best in people and showing that acts of kindness really do matter. Amy Uyeki, illustrator of this wonderful book will share her animated film for the first time at HSU.

GOING WITH THE GRAIN describes the resurgence of locally grown grains in Humboldt County including wheat and quinoa. Learn from several entrepreneurs how they have incorporated local grains into their products.

COASTAL FOODS: SOWING THE SEEDS OF SUSTAINABILITY explores Humboldt's coastal local food movement including Community Supported Agriculture farms (CSAs), Native community health, and how important young people are to the future of local foods.

Come meet the filmmakers, learn about Oh SNAP!, and eat delicious local food! This is a FREE event.

"Food for Thought" is a DreamMaker project of the Ink People Center for the Arts. These films recognize the outstanding work of local food enthusiasts. Come celebrate our community and food connections!

Art + Feminism Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon

Join us for a communal updating of Wikipedia entries on subjects related to art and feminism on Wednesday, March 4 from 12-3pm in the Library Lab 121. We will provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments. We'll have a computer lab for you to work in and suggestions for pages to edit, but you can also bring your laptop and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited to participate.

Webinar: Challenging the Normalization of Hate: Strategies for Truth, Racial Healing, & Transformation

How can Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) inform strategies to address the increasing normalization of hate within our communities? Attend this webinar on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 12-1:30pm in Library 114 to find out more.  Given the power of the internet and social media for spreading white supremacist thought, Jessie Daniels, the author of Cyber Racism, will share strategies for countering the spread of racist ideology. Panelists from three TRHT Campus Centers—Jermaine Pearson (Brown University), Charmaine DM Royal (Duke University), and J. Goosby Smith (The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina)—will also discuss how the TRHT Framework can bring about radical change, through storytelling, active listening, and community-engaged work. There will be time for Q & A during the webinar and there will be a facilitated discussion afterwards. This webinar is co-sponsored by Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

On Thursday, February 27, from 5pm-7pm, businesses and students from diverse academic disciplines are invited to enjoy conversation, food, and soft beverages at the D Street Neighborhood Center, 1301 D Street, Arcata.

Special Collections: Love researching Humboldt history? Excited to share your passion with other students? The HSU Library Special Collections is hiring student assistants for a variety of projects. Under the supervision of the Special Collections Librarian, student duties include:

  • Provide research and library assistance for HSU students and community users.
  • Teach researchers how to navigate the Special Collections website, catalog, database and finding aids.
  • Complete collection inventories and photoduplication requests.
  • Answer the Humboldt Room phone and reply to distance researcher requests.
  • Promote Special Collections via social media and blogs.
  • Updating the content of the Humboldt Room website and perform quality control for archival projects.
  • Provide access to the rare book collection while maintaining the safety of the collection.
  • Edit Wikipedia pages related to Humboldt County History in order to direct researchers to collections in the archive.
  • Graphic design projects.
  • Create physical and digital exhibits to promote Special Collections to visitors.

Skills Required: Experience using the Humboldt Room collections. Knowledge of archival procedures and standards. Ability to work independently and use problem solving skills and independent judgement.

Other Competencies Required: Dependable, proactive, show initiative, interest in Special Collections or library work.

Preferred Skills: Maintain accurate statistics Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access), Adobe Photoshop and Indesign, scanning, efficient typing, web creation, video editing, or text editing are bonuses.

Cancelled - Digital Literacy & Professional Development Workshops
Free Digital Literacy classes offered by HSU Library and the County Library

Due to concerns about the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) we are canceling the planned workshops effective immediately until further notice. If there are any questions about the workshops please contact Louis Knecht at louis.knecht@humboldt.edu.

The Humboldt State University Library and the Humboldt County Library are offering free workshops to the community centered around computer skills and professional development thanks in large part by a California State Library Services and Technology Act grant.

The Innovative Digital Literacies Grant will fund workshops openly available to the Humboldt community and will be hosted at the Humboldt County Library Main Branch. Digital literacy is a crucial skill for expanding career opportunities and supporting professional growth in the community and these workshops will involve the participants the chance to engage with Google Chromebooks to enhance these technology abilities.

Workshops, ranging from using Google Suite applications, building resumes and cover letters, using and sending PDF documents, and making graphic design materials such as posters and advertisements, will aide participants in connecting current strengths with needed skills for the local job market. The Humboldt County Library and Humboldt State University Library will also offer workshops that support community conversations using a program called Voicethread.

These programs will address community needs of access to technology, job market readiness, and confidence with using digital literacy skills in everyday life.

Offered Workshops

Starting in January 2020, the workshops will be offered and divided into several series: PDF document Usership, Professional Development, Google Suite, Canva Graphic Design, and Voicethread. Unless specified these workshops will be offered at the Humboldt County Library Main Branch in Eureka.

PDF Essentials will focus on learning about the document format, why businesses use it, and different applicabilities of PDF document sending and viewing.

Japanese American Internment Pop Up Museum & Taiko Swingposium

Each year on January 30, HSU observes the annual Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution. This year, a pop-up museum of WWII internment camp artifacts will be on display on the first floor of the HSU Library from January 14-27, 2020. There will be originally designed banners explaining the history of the Japanese American incarceration camps, artifacts and ephemera collected from camp survivors, as well as books and posters will be on display in various exhibit cases and the lobby. Visitors can learn about the experiences of Japanese American families incarcerated in the WWII internment camps by perusing this pop-up museum featuring family objects and photos from camp, belonging to local Humboldt County Japanese American residents whose family members were interned.

San Jose Taiko will be coming to Humboldt with their exciting performance of SWINGPOSIUM ON THE ROAD. They will provide a 30-minute stage performance followed by a Q & A in Van Duzer Theater at 7pm, Thursday, Jan. 30. THis performance is free and open to everyone. Q & A will address constitutional rights and the laws eroded that protected people of color, different ethnicities or religions. We hope to foster dialogue around human and civil rights, and honor the resilience of the Japanese Americans who endured illegal mass incarceration. This performance is funded by HSU Library and HSU Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Swingposium will transport audiences back to the days of World War II and tell the story of big bands in the Japanese American incarceration camps. It is a celebration of the big band music that was a source of hope in the camps and a connection to the outside world. Four public performances will be presented: a free public performance Jan. 30 at the Humboldt State University Van Duzer Theater and three ticketed performances on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at Bayside Community Hall, 2297 Jacoby Creek Road. Tickets for the Bayside performances are $10, and will go on sale Saturday, Jan. 4 at brownpapertickets.com and Wildberries Market in Arcata. All events have been coordinated by Taiko Swing Humboldt, a project of the Humboldt Folklife Society.

On Jan. 30 at 7 p.m., in observance of the Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution, a 30-minute performance followed by discussion will be presented in the Van Duzer Theater. This performance is free to the public, funded by the HSU Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and the HSU Library Foundation. The week prior to Jan. 30, banners explaining the history of the Japanese American incarceration camps and artifacts and ephemera collected from camp survivors will be displayed in the HSU Library lobby.

The three Bayside Community Hall performances will begin with a 30-minute “talk story” before audience members are immersed in a 90-minute Swingposium living history experience at the dance. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to these performances on Jan. 31 at 6:30 p.m. and Feb. 1, at 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. Because attendees are “at the dance,” the audience will be standing for the duration of the performance, with only limited seating available upon request for persons with limited mobility. Webinar: Telling the Story of Our Social World with Data

Data provides students with a granular view of the world around them. Understanding the world with data is critical to the social sciences, especially because many students tend to assume that opinions, not data, will determine their educational experience. It is by exploring and visualizing data in the social sciences that students and researchers can gain meaningful insights into the problems and challenges which human societies face today.

How has economic inequality affected minorities in the U.S.? How have demographic shifts over time impacted the growth of American cities? How many people are opting to not get married in the U.S. and how does that impact the population going forward? How to examine these and other topics with data forms the crux of this webinar offered on Tuesday, January 21, 11am-12pm in the Library Fishbowl.

Dr. Quentin Kilpatrick, an instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University, will lead this webinar and discuss how he brings real-world data to life for his students in the social sciences. Using Social Explorer, Dr. Kilpatrick tells the story of American society. Learn how he integrates storytelling with data using Social Explorer in the courses that he teaches. Social Explorer is a premier data visualization and mapping tool, currently enhancing the research experience in over 400 academic libraries in the U.S. This is a timely webinar for all data and social science librarians, and for anyone interested in examining the social world today with data.

Quentin Kilpatrick is a recent Ph.D. graduate from Florida State University. His research interests are focused on the environmental and personal factors that shape stress exposure, mental health, and health behaviors in the transition from adolescence through adulthood. His research has examined how stress impacts the mental and physical health of individuals across social statuses of age, gender, race/ethnicity, and nativity. He currently splits his time between teaching at Virginia Commonwealth University and working in theater productions in New York.

This webinar on Wednesday, January 22 from 11am-12pm in the Library Fishbowl will explore changing motivations for philanthropy, changes over time in charitable giving, and possible generational differences in approaches to philanthropy. This program Will Further Explore:

Library Scholar Internship on Tourism & Travel

Are you interested in the tourism and travel industry? Apply to be a Library Scholar Intern!

HSU Library is seeking two Library Scholar Interns to work as a team on a Tourism & Travel Project that runs from February to May 20, 2020. This paid internship provides a stipend of $500 upon the completion of the internship project, consisting of:

  • developing an exhibit May 5-11 and an event for National Tourism Day on May 7
  • performing research and gathering information and data about tourism and travel for Humboldt County
  • developing a resource guide.

Team roles and duties will be tailored to the talents and interests of the interns.

In addition to developing a resource guide, the Library Scholars will:

  • Maintain an internship log, including experiences and challenges that they encountered over the course of their project. Meet together at least one hour each week.
  • Perform research and interviews to gather resources, develop a resource guide and suggested resources on tourism and travel, eco- and edu- tourism, and other related resources.
  • Gather information from a variety of sources - web pages, news sources, interviews, etc, - to understand the tourism and travel interests at HSU and in the region.
  • Evaluate existing travel apps and how Humboldt County is represented.
  • Write a brief reflection of the internship.

HSU students will work individually and as a team to gain hands-on experience researching, evaluating resources, and developing a resource guide of recommended readings for tourism and travel.

Library Makerspace Meet Up and Make Hours Monday - Saturday 12-2pm and 5-7pm

The Library Makerspace is open for use at any time, but sometimes you need a meeting time to get other makers together. Starting Spring semester, during Meet Up and Make Hours, Monday through Saturday 12-2pm & 5-7pm, you can meet with a librarian the first hour, or with other makers (like yourselves), or work on self-directed projects. 

Come to Meet Ups to chat about projects, ideas, and troubleshooting for all kinds of maker topics, or just to get connected with other people interested in being creative. Some Meet Ups will feature maker-related SkillShops with time to work on a related project or practice skills that you explored in the SkillShop. Other Meet Ups will be thematic or open for free play.

Therapy Dogs International will bring their canine companions to the Library Lobby for your enjoyment during Finals Week on Monday, Dec. 16 from 2-3:30pm and Tuesday, Dec. 17 from 6:30-8pm in the Library Lobby

It has been clinically proven that through petting, touching, and talking with animals, blood pressure is lowered, stress is relieved, and depression is eased. Take a break from studying or reward yourself after your final and relax with a retriever, love a lab, hug a husky, or pet a pug. They are here for you to enjoy!

Note: These trained and certified dogs will be the only animals allowed. Please leave your pets at home.

ideaFest 2020 Registration Now Open!

The Office of Research, HSU Library, and Marketing & Communications would like to invite you to participate in the 7th Annual HSU ideaFest! More than 400 Students, Faculty, & Staff from HSU will showcase research, performances, creative projects, and more!

HSU's 2020 ideaFest will be held on Friday, May 8th. If you or your students are interested in presenting, registration for ideaFest 2020 is now open! Click Here for more information or to sign up. This will be a great venue for students to display previously presented professional posters or multimedia presentations at this campus-wide research & creative activities symposium.

The deadline to register for ideaFest is Friday April 3, 2020. Please note that MarCom will be available to reprint your poster should you need to prior to the event.
