SFX Introduction

HSU Library implements exciting new service called SFX! Finding full-text articles becomes easier!

What is this new service?

Many of our databases are currently designed to provide you with the fulltext of articles or other resources. The convenience of immediate access to fulltext makes these databases popular, understandably! But we also have many other high quality databases that currently provide only publication information for resources. The researcher must take the additional step of finding the resource either through the HSU Library Catalog or through the HSU Periodicals List, to see if the Library provides access to the resource.

With the implementation of SFX, you now will have expanded access to online fulltext articles through many more databases, as well as links to other relevant services such as the HSU Library catalog, a document delivery form, etc.

How does SFX work?

Simply put, you begin with a "Source" (typically an A&I database), complete your search, and find a citation for a journal you would like in fulltext. Using the Open URL metadata standard, SFX takes the information, or metadata, from the current record (your citation) and then it uses this metadata to locate additional information in other electronic resources as well as defined library services. When you click on the Availability via SFX link, a menu screen appears with a list of appropriate services such as links to fulltext, the HSU Library catalog, a document delivery form, etc. The services are context sensitive, and not all services will display each time. For example, if fulltext is available, there will not be a link to a document delivery form.

Where can I get help?

Because SFX works from within multiple databases, no help screens are currently available. For additional assistance within the Library, ask a reference librarian. Comments or questions may also be sent electronically to: Ask a Question about SFX
