Library Catalogs and Subject Classifications in Wildlife
Library catalogs are used to locate monographic (book) materials. These may be either "primary" publications--conference proceedings, technical reports, theses, and dissertations--or "secondary" publications--textbooks, treatises, handbooks and similar publications derived from the "primary" literature.

Library of Congress Classification System
The general book collection in the HSU Library is organized on the shelves by subject using this classification system used by most academic libraries in the United States. (In addition most special collections in the HSU Library- "Periodicals," "Reference," "Map and Atlas," and "Indexes and Abstracts" - all follow this same subject arrangement.) The Library of Congress Classification Outline (Library of Congress) gives a general overview of the entire classification system. Listed below are the major classification areas where wildlife literature is likely to be found:

Library Catalog
The HSU Library Catalog can be searched by author, title, or subject. Since subject searching is often the most difficult Biological Searching in Library Catalogs offers both general techniques and specific suggestions for conducting a subject search.
Other Library Catalogs--Wildlife
Library catalogs connected with universities, govenment agencies and other institutions with programs in wildlife can be used to identify "secondary" and some "primary" literature held in libraries around the world. The Library's Interlibrary Loan Service can be used to borrow most materials found in other libraries. Some specific library catalogs of interest include the following.
- National Agricultural Library (U.S Department of Agriculture) Detailed catalog of book, serial, and government document literature acquired since 1862 by the major agricultural research library in the United States. Many serial publications are individually cataloged.

Also inlcudes publications of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands , TRAFFIC - the joint wildlife trade monitoring programme of IUCN and WWF, UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre , and a small selection of titles from IUCN members or other publishers.
